4.3 out of 5 stars 92 ratings

He’s determined to prove his friend innocent of homicide. He may make things worse…

When Marty’s surfer-dude pal is arrested for murder, he must squeeze his amateur sleuthing into his packed schedule. With his high-tech job busier than ever and his nieces’ antics sidetracking him, Marty’s ready for a Thanksgiving holiday. All he has to do is solve two murders. But if he can’t even convince his sister to bake his favorite chocolate pie, how can he hope to save his friend?

With the help of his girlfriend, some wacky coworkers and Buddy the rambunctious Labrador, Marty sets out to disprove the ironclad evidence. But as the suspect list blossoms out of control, his bumbling efforts might lead him into problems faster than a failing hard drive.

Can he clear his friend’s name before he’s blown to bits?

Hit and Mist is the fourth book in the riotous Silicon Valley cozy mystery series. If you like your murder cases twisty, your suspect lists long, and your detectives clueless, then you’ll love Marc Jedel’s humorous murder adventure.

Marc Jedel writes humorous murder mysteries. Years in Silicon Valley marketing leadership positions honed his sense of humor and writing skills. Crafting fiction on the job was simply called emails, ads, and marketing collateral.

The publication of Marc’s first novel, Uncle and Ants, gave him permission to claim “author” as his job. This leads to much more interesting conversations with people than answering, “marketing.”

Like his character, Andy, from the Redwoods Country Mystery series, Marc continues to grow older and would prefer not to run a bed-and-breakfast inn when he retires. Like his character, Marty, from the Silicon Valley Mystery series, Marc now lives in Silicon Valley, works in high-tech, and enjoys bad puns. Like his characters Jonas and Elizabeth from the Ozarks Lake Mystery series, he grew up in the South and spent plenty of time in and around Arkansas. Like all his protagonists, Marc too has a dog, although his is neurotic, sweet, and small, with little appreciation for Marc’s humor.

It was nice to find a series to read during this coVid time that could give you a good mystery without getting the reader too stressed out. My husband and I both enjoyed this mystery with a light comedic touch. Crazy hero With crazier family .

While I'm not sure if want to live in his world [so many dead people], I do enjoy his exploits as he solves the murder mystery in his own unique way!
    Quick, fun read!

Fun addition to the series. Being inside Marty’s head is a study in neurosis and a little bit of narcissism. He’s a fun, bumbling character and the stories are a great escape. Recommend.

Marty Marty Marty....what are we going to do with you?

I have enjoyed this series from the first book.  Marty is a doting uncle that tells bad jokes to his nieces and has an inflated sense of what he does (or doesn't do) for the local police force.  In fact, it has earned him the nickname Princess from Detective Mace.  But that doesn't stop him, along with some help from his coworkers, in jumping right in to try and solve the mystery and help his friend, Brody, out of a jam.  Sadly, I don't think he gets much of it right.

Marty makes me laugh at the situations he finds himself in the middle of and I sometimes wonder how he can be so clueless.  I think I mentioned this in some of my reviews of his other books, but I think Marty might be on the spectrum.  If he isn't, he has many traits such as his obsession with different aspects of the case or with his friends.  I do like how his girlfriend, Megan, helps keep him somewhat grounded.  His sister, nieces, and even his neighbor Mrs. Kim round out his life.  I was happy to see his coworker, Raj, back from his trip to India.  However, there is a surprise that he unleashes on Marty that should make for some interesting side stories in future books.

The mystery was engaging and it was intriguing to watch Marty try and connect the dots.  No spoilers, but the reveal of the killer wasn't what I was expecting.  I did guess how one part of that scene would play out based on previous comments in the book.

Overall, an enjoyable series and we give it 4 paws up.

If you are a fan of the Silicon Valley Mystery series by Marc Jedel, the fourth book, Hit and Mist, will grab you immediately !!

In Hit and Mist Marty's close friend, Starbuck's barista Brody is in trouble and even his boyfriend Sergeant Mace Jackson cannot help him !! It seems that Brody is in the wrong place at the wrong time.....twice !! First when Marty and his girlfriend, Meghan, are attending a kickboxing class at her gym, the instructor Gabriela goes outside after the class and gets killed by a bomb and Brody happens to be there taking his break from work. Then the next day when Marty and Meghan go on a kayaking trip to take their minds off of Gabriela's death, they come into contact with another dead body floating in the water....and Brody being arrested for it.

Of course Marty wants to help prove Brody's innocence and he has this crazy idea that he is the police department's secret weapon and helps solve cases. But with Mace being sidelined due to his relationship with Brody, Marty is on his own.

Clearly by accident Marty finds out that the new COO at his company is the grieving widow of Gabriela and he and Meghan find out that Gabriela was still using the garden shed at her old house so he begins to form a plan on how to get him to confess to the murders.

As readers soon realize Marty is very lucky when it comes to "solving" cases. Marty usually has little to no idea what he is doing but he somehow does uncover the guilty party and bring justice to the victims and their families. No matter how he does it, readers love the way he goes about doing it !! And the relationships he has with his family, girlfriend, co-workers and friends will have readers laughing out loud and loving every minute of the story !!

If you haven't gotten lost in this series, I highly recommend putting it on your "To be read" list..... and let Marty, Rover and crew take you for an enjoyable ride !!!

In the fourth book of this Silicon Valley mystery series, Marty Golden appears again in his amateur detective role. Though untrained and impulsive, Marty imagines himself as a valuable asset to the local police department. He is eager to solve crimes and continues to find himself in the vicinity of murders. With lots of self-confidence and little regard for personal danger, he conducts many potentially dangerous and hilarious escapades.
He has developed a relationship with police officer, Mace Jackson, who Marty frequently calls with tips on how to solve the case at hand. Mace’s view of Marty’s “help” may not be the same as Marty’s.
Marty is joined in his detective capers by his girlfriend, Meghan and his co-workers, Raj and Fernanado, all colorful characters.
The story line frequently contrasts Marty’s detective persona with his role as a goofy uncle to two nieces and a little brother to his sister who treats him with fond disdain.
Hit and Mist is fun to read and is a strong addition to this series. I welcomed the opportunity to preview it and provide a review.
