HOLY SMOKE (An Andi Comstock Supernatural Mystery, Book 1) (78,527 words)

Smoke doesn’t always mean there’s fire...

Andi Comstock loves her new job, but she can’t figure out why she is the only person in the building who smells the smoke. Not only does she smell it, but each time she does, she hears a voice in her head.

One of those voices suggests she talk to Father Riley at St. Gemma’s Church, “a man of God and a believer in the afterlife.” Stunned and hoping she hasn’t lost her mind or developed a brain tumor, Andi makes the leap back to church. Much to her surprise, she gains a cohort in her effort to track down the source of both the smoke and the voices.

Sometimes, it means murder...

Then comes a voice that belongs to someone Andi went to school with and it’s begging for help. When Andi and Father Riley discover they may have stumbled upon a murder, the priest summons homicide detective Jack Harmon for assistance.

Now if Andi can just figure out why the voice keeps telling her, “Look at my teeth.”

Ann Simas lives in Oregon, but she is a Colorado girl at heart, having grown up in the Rocky Mountains. She has been an avid reader since childhood and penned her first fiction "book" in high school. She particularly likes to write mystery/suspense/thriller with a love story and paranormal or supernatural elements. She is a three-time RWA Golden Heart Finalist. Simas currently has 42 books in print. All are available in both paperback and in ebook format.

An award-winning watercolorist and a budding photographer, Ann also enjoys needlework and gardening in her spare time. She is her family's "genealogist" and has been blessed with the opportunity to conduct first-hand research in Italy for both her writing and her family tree. The genealogy research from decade's old documents in Italian, she says, has been a supreme but gratifying challenge.

I received this book for free, with the idea that if I wanted to I could review it, and I definitely want to. This book is a strange mixture of paranormal, detective, romance and I'm not sure what else--but it grabbed my interest and held on. And just when I thought I had it all figured out as to what was going to happen and when--the old switcheroo got pulled! In this story Andi Comstock is a game programmer who discovers she has an unusual ability to connect with the dead and help them get justice. Unfortunately, her zeal can drive her police detective boyfriend crazy with worry over her safety. I liked the book for the steady progression of finding of evidence and explaining of technical points along with the family discussions and other things going on, then the sudden switch to just "go for broke" action near the end. And, there's at least one more book after this one!

Ann Simas' writing is smooth and pulls you along so you don't realize how fast you are being drawn into the action until you finally notice you're on page 123 or 142 or some such outlandish number--not 10 or 12 or even 14! You just need to find out what the next thing happening is going to be, or how it's going to turn out or whatever. She does it to you smoothly so you don't notice you're turning those pages.... That's the mark of a good writer in my book. I want to read more of her work and there is another in this series and several other pieces she's written. Based on what I saw in this book, most anything she has written is worth a read. Give her a try!

Meet Andi Comstock! Just because she smells smoke that no one can smell and just because she hears voices that no one else can hear doesn't make her crazy ... right?

She's adjusting to those things until one of the voices tell Andi that she was murdered ... and more astonishingly, she knows who the voice belongs to. She passed away a couple of weeks ago and it's someone that Andi went to school with.

When another voice tells her to seek out Father Riley at the Catholic Church just down the street, she's desperate enough to do just that.

Father Riley becomes a good friend and brings in Homicide Detective Jack Harmon to help solve this murder mystery.

And the attraction between Andi and Jack is combustible!

This is a terrific supernatural mystery. Not my normal favored genre, but the author did a fine job of drawing me in from the very first page. And the characters are wonderfully described and brought to life.

Andi is a hoot ... she's funny, she's kind, she's inquisitive. Jack is a dedicated by the book cop, but at least willing to listen to Andi's story without rolling his eyes .. well, eventually. The way they interact is priceless. I chuckled though a lot of this book .... but there are also plenty of somber moments.

I can hardly wait to see what the author has planned for Andi and Jack in the next of this series.

Many thanks to Ann Simas / Candid Book Reviews / who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Holy Smoke was so much better than I thought it would be. I'll admit that after reading the synopsis I though oh no am I really going to like this book? Of course then I said well it is Ann Simas and I've loved all her books so far that I've read so I'll give it a try, what! By the first chapter I'm all over this book! The story line itself keeps you so involved I was annoyed when I had to stop reading to work and eat lol the characters are so developed and the details in her writing and the story you just have to keep all your wits about you as you read the book because things just keep tying in together from the beginning to the end.
Andi the lead female character had such passion that even though she could be in danger she still pursues the truth and the plot was crazy good who would ever think they need to fear their dentist although I'm nervous to schedule my next cleaning. You'll get the joke when you read the book.
Wow, this was a great read totally 10 stars worth. I loved this book!

Holy Smoke was a fantastic supernatural mystery. I loved every second of this book. It's packed full of strange occurrences, adventure and even romance. Definitely looking forward to reading more in this series. I highly recommend reading this book.

Andi loves her new job, but when she starts smelling smoke, she gets a little worried. After asking her coworkers, she realizes that she's the only one who smells it, and she hears voices while she smells it. When she starts talking to one particular reoccurring voice, she knows she needs to talk to someone about these strange occurrences. Turning to a local priest recommended by the "smokies" or voices, they try to figure out the mystery behind the voices, and discover a murder mystery instead.

We have all probably had some experience with the supernatural. We just know something has happened or we thinking someone is going to call and then it happens. Author Ann Simas uses the supernatural throughout Holy Smoke. It is a great story when one person follows her supernatural thoughts and connects with other people until she has figured out the entire mystery. Andi Comstock does just that connecting with Father Riley and Detective Jack Harmon. It is a well-paced mystery with a little bit of romance. In the end following up on the supernatural clues, the mystery is solved. This is the first book in a series. I can’t wait to read more! Another great read by an up and coming author.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a terrific read!

Fabulous read. What a great plot and I wonder how many of us will cancel their next appointment. A plot of a deranged woman who has convinced herself that she is a goddess in a mishmash of religions and starts killing everyone she thinks is impeding her desires. Wonderful characters from our slightly nerdy heroine who can suddenly hear voices of the dead and smell smoke to the handsome hero who as a detective has a strict moral code on doing everything by the book whilst still believing in the afterlife.
When she starts smelling smoke and hearing voices she assumes that she has a tumour. However when one voice in particular tells her that she died before her time and another urges her to see the local Father she can't not do it. The dead woman was a high school friend and the more she finds out the more she wants to take the killer down. With the help of the Father, her detective and his LT they start digging further especially with the information the voices provide. Will they get the killer or will the killer get them?
