A Horse To Die For (Robin Vaughan Equestrian Mysteries Book 5) Kindle Edition
Noel is a horse to die for … but will he be the death of Robin’s best friend?
Texas, 1990s
Christmas is coming. The season of peace, goodwill, and – for Robin Vaughan – another mystery to solve.
Her best friend Lola’s received the perfect Christmas gift in the shape of the beautiful dressage horse Noel. But Robin has the oddest feeling that she’s seen Noel before…
Lola’s horse bears an uncanny resemblance to eccentric heiress Louanne Perry’s horse Wickie. But Wickie’s dead … and he died while in Robin’s care. Didn’t he?
But more alarming still is the discovery that Noel (or Wickie) killed his last owner…
A worried Robin decides to investigate. When she tracks down Louanne’s vet, the sinister Ornell Standish, the pieces of the puzzle start to fall into place … and soon she’s uncovered a subterfuge that’s so bizarre she can scarcely believe it.
Throw a kitchen disaster, a lightning dash to Los Angeles and a spirited Jack Russell puppy into the mix, and this Christmas is looking set to be one Robin will never forget…
But is Robin kidding herself that Wickie could still be alive? And what’s behind her friend’s sudden coldness towards her?
And if Lola won’t talk to her, how can Robin warn her about the danger she’s in?
Narrated with Carolyn Banks’s trademark charm and humour, A HORSE TO DIE FOR is the final mystery to feature the irrepressible equestrian Robin Vaughan and her friends.

"Carolyn Banks has a sense of style and wit." --The New York Times
From the Inside Flap
Certainly not die-hard horse aficionado Robin Vaughan. She would never lay a hand on any four-legged creature, least of all the magnificent horse her friend Lola had just received as a Christmas gift.
But Robin suspects that beautiful Noel isn't quite the horse he seems. For one thing he killed his last owner. For another he bears an uncanny resemblance to a horse called Wickie, who haunts Robin's past and whom she knows to be dead. In fact, she'd swear that Noel is Wickie. Can she prove it? She decides to try, and uncovers a scam so far-fetched it can hardly be believed and a villain too repellent to be real. But he's not only real, he's deadly dangerous, and Robin's on a breakneck ride with destiny--toward confrontation, truth, and terminal terror. . . .

- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2023It was refreshing to read a book where the main character is in a happy marriage. The basis of the plot actually has happened in the horse world. Again, Banks writes well, with normal dialog, and good plot pacing. She certainly knows the horse world. I've enjoyed this series and have recommended it to friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2014i ONLY PICKED UP THIS BOOK FOR MY GRANDDAUGHTER WHO WORKS TRAINING HORSES AND NOW I AM RECOMMENDING IT TO ALL MY BOOKCLUB FRIENDS. I LOVED THIS, ESPECIALLY WHERE SHE REALIZES THAT THIS BEAUTIFUL THOROUGHBRED HORSE IS COLD AND CUTS UP HER BED QUILT TO KEEP HIM WARM. SINCE SHE RAISES MORGANS WHO GROW A HEAVY COAT FOR THE WINTER, SHE HADN'T THOUGHT ABOUT THIS. LOVING THIS MISTREATED HORSE HELPS HER TO HEAL. LOVE HOW SHE "INTRODUCES" THE HORSES TO ONE ANOTHER.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2008This was a disappointment, after reading Death by Dressage. So much time was taken up by the narrator rambling down tracks that lead no where. This was a thin book to begin with, but the entire story could have been told in one chapter. I was really disappointed in this book and would not recommend it for others.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2025I absolutely LOVE this series! I read several of these when they first came out and loved them, and now almost 30 years later, I still do. Just sad that this is the last one.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2014The book was a fast read but not particularly exciting, although her experiences in the L.A. area were a lively part.
( I still don't understand why Robin could have thought the horse was dead when it wasn't.) It was nice that she could get rid of the guilt she had held for such a long time.
She seemed quite indifferent about getting the right Christmas presents for everyone, but it all worked out in surprising and amusing ways - for her and everyone else.
The ending was good as the "bad guys" got what they deserved.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2015Very different and original story line here, from someone who has read A LOT of horse stories. Well-written and very true on horse detail.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2010Carolyn Banks books are kind of goofy. Check her books out at your local library and spend your money on another authors books.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2013A quick read. Horse books with a twist to the plots. A good one to read on a plane or when you have a couple of hours.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing
Read this on my kindle app on i-pad, and was really looking forward to reading this as had read a few reviews of the authoress Carolyn Banks. Was slightly disappointed as I thought the writing was more for a teenager-? The basic story was good I thought the horse was going to be a ghost or something like that, so was pleasantly surprised it wasn't! However, I felt the story was 'rushed' towards the end, the character of 'Standish' was a bit 'silly' and I felt the story had 'more to give'. Probably wouldn't pay for another one of her books, but may give her another chance if someone lent one to me!

Badly written and a load of old rubbish. Don't waste your time reading it!
I would be reluctant to give it one star
