4.5 out of 5 stars 796 ratings

Forever haunted by the unresolved disappearance of his wife Sarah, PI Evan Buckley does for other people what he can't do for himself, taking on their problems as if they were his own. But when Sarah’s scheming and treacherous friend Carly says she knows what happened to Sarah, he finds himself in a terrible predicament. Is she telling the truth? And, if so, what must he do for her first?

His troubled past and the murderous present collide violently when he goes head-to-head with cold-blooded killers hunting Carly’s friend, a rogue undercover cop called Dixie. In the midst of the mayhem and the killing, trying to keep ahead of the vicious gang with Old Testament ideas about betrayal and retribution, he’s got a nasty feeling Carly knows more than she’s saying.

Worse, the cop’s psychotic brother just got out of jail. With a festering grievance in his heart and a home-made garrotte in his hands, he’s got Evan fixed squarely in his sights as the case rapidly goes from frying pan to fire.

Has Evan finally found what he’s been looking for? Or should he walk away while he still can?

In Hunting Dixie, we find Evan Buckley, PI at the beck and call of a lying, scheming woman named Carly. She supposedly has information about the location of Evan’s wife, Sarah. All he has to do is find a man named Dixie. As with most of Evan’s assignments, trouble seems to be easier to find than Dixie. I really enjoyed reading Hunting Dixie. I found myself immersed in the story from the very first page. The characters seemed so real that I despised Carly and felt sorry for Evan. Hunting Dixie is fast moving novel with a complex storyline that contains several subplots within the main story

Lots of plot lines that twisted together make this addition to the Evan Buckley series keep the reader in suspense. Drug kingpins, pedophiles, undercover cops, deranged psychopaths, one wicked woman and plenty of murders and mayhem. What more can one fan of criminal novels handle? Evan Buckley suffers yet more misfortune, but manages to overcome all in his continuing quest to find his long missing wife. His strengthening relationships with his love interest Kate and PI colleague Crow provide additional threads of continuity in the series. Fun to read and hard to put down.

The sixth installment in the Evan Buckley series was an enjoyable but much slower read for me than the first five books. A number of new characters, all introduced to augment the story, instead made the plot a little difficult to follow. I found myself at points having to flip back to previous chapters to remind myself who certain characters were. There were also a few storylines, tangential to the primary focus of the book, that I hope are more fully developed in subsequent books as I was left feeling they were incomplete. While it was not my favorite story or the case of greatest interest to me, it was still a good read, one I would encourage readers who have followed Evan Buckley thus far to indulge in.

I wrote a great review, touched the screen and Kindle deleted. Once again...This is an amazing novel full of good/bad guys with or without morals. Trying to keep track becomes hazardous at times. And Evan Buckley is part Timex watch and Energizer Bunny. He gets more takedowns than a month of nightly wrestling...yet he seems to rebound quickly unlike the bodies or people that litter the chapters. As the author stated, there is a twist at the end....where it leads who knows. Good read. Any mispellings or weird spacing is Kindle...if I try to fix, it deletes the review. Maybe better when warmer. Get a large cup of coffee, snuggle under covers and read.

When Sarah’s old friend Carly resurfaces asking Evan to help her, he wasn’t sure he wanted to know why. When he reluctantly agreed to meet her, she showed him a photo of something he thought he recognized. Could it be possible?? When she tells him that she needs to find someone, she doesn’t give him a complete explanation as to why, but just that she needs to find him.

Soon Evan finds himself in the middle of another game of cat and mouse, someone chasing him, while he’s chasing them. When he asked Guillory to look up some things for him, he finds out that she’s been suspended for hitting a pedophile while interrogating him, she was that disgusted by the man that she could no longer control herself.

When Dixie, the man Carly wanted Evan to find, turns up dead, immediately after meeting with Evan at Evan’s office, the cops find Evan’s fingerprints on the bullet casings, believing Evan was the guilty party. Therefore the cops are now in search of Evan as well. When Evan’s worst favorite cop, Ryder, gets wind of the whole situation, he tells Kate she’d better be careful, due to the fact she may be in the company of a killer.

Upon finding out who in fact is in the photo that Carly shared with Evan, he and Guillory stumble into an already invaded home of Carly’s best friend.  It’s been ransacked by whom they don’t know but someone they do suspect.  What they find is more terrible than they ever expected.

When Evan thinks he’s figured out where to find something else of interest to Carly that he’s looking for, he drives the two of them to a warehouse and has Guillory wait in the car while he goes inside. He doesn’t expect what’s coming and outside, Guillory takes off in pursuit when she sees the pedophile driving down the road, leaving Evan stranded. It doesn’t take long for the pedophile to lose Guillory, and when she returns to find Evan, he’s been strangled with a garrote, barely able to breathe. Later, the two of them are found by the goons of the man in search of Carly and his 3 million dollars that she’d stolen and they’re taken back to the head boss. The boss has no idea that Guillory is a cop or that Evan is a private detective, yet. Soon the Evan and Kate are separated for insurance purposes for the money, but unfortunately for the bad guys, they aren’t able to get possession of it.

Once again, James Harper, another awesome Evan Buckley thriller!! Though we still have no idea what’s happened to Evan’s wife Sarah, there’s always a chance that Mr. Harper will give us another fast paced, heart pounding book that WILL spill! Way to go James!

With more twists than a savage roller coaster, Hunting Dixie, just keeps you on the hook… never knowing who the bad guy is. An all consuming story, where Evan is pulled in so many differnet ways trying to find out what happened to his wife, Sarah. Kate’s fearsome side rears its head as they race to remain alive and kicking!

Just when you think that Evan will finally get a break on trying to find his missing wife the story takes another turn and he misses out on the lead. Once again James Harper takes us on a twisting, turning, nail-biting journey with the Private Investigator Evan Buckley. This time his wife's friend Carly asks for help and while he is trying to refuse to take her case, she hints that she has information on the whereabouts of her friend and missing wife Sarah - what's a man got to do? However, he is suckered again and ends up entangled with local drug lords, undercover police and ex-cons. Kate Guillory also becomes embroiled in his case and she is also trying to catch a paedophile ring too. The story is very well written with many twists and turns. It was an amazing read - couldn't put it down!! As always just as you think everything is going to be resolved, the author leaves you with a further little cliff hanger - roll on book 7......

5.0 out of 5 stars Is Evan finally on track to finding his missing wife?
Reviewed in Australia on December 16, 2018
This is the best Evan Buckley novel to date. In this book Buckley finally earns the right to call himself a good private investigator at least in my estimation. Buckley has learned a large measure of self-control that allows him to actually follow up leads instead of chasing off without thinking it through first perhaps he is actually learning something from Guillory! Whilst on the surface the main story line appears to be straight forward there are many and varied sub-plots that chip away at the apparently straight forward main story that keeps the reader involved and of course there is the ever present elephant in the room, Evan's missing wife Sarah. Guillory begins to show a more human side and the mutual attraction between her and Evan becomes ever more apparent. Together they make a very good team. In short this is a very good murder, mystery thriller that will keep the reader involved and wanting more.
