Ice-Cold Death: An Oona Goodlight Magic and Murder Mystery, book one Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 742 ratings

Murder and dark magic are just the beginning.

I should have known finding a dead teammate on the ice rink was just the beginning. As if the psychic vision of his murder wasn't bad enough—watching him die, feeling his pain—now I've got a frustratingly handsome wizard-slash-private investigator asking for my help solving the case. Me, Oona Goodlight, who's spent years trying to keep my empathic abilities under wraps while playing beer league hockey.

But there's something seriously wrong about our killer's aura—a weird doubling effect I've never seen before. And when I start sensing his presence around town and seeing figures that vanish into thin air, I realize I'm already caught in whatever twisted game he's playing. Now I have to use the psychic powers I've always hidden to track down a murderer who might not even be human, all while trying to figure out if I can trust Diego Adair, the mysterious wizard who seems to know more than he's telling.

One thing's for sure: if I don't solve this case fast, I might be the killer's next target. And in Hermosa Beach where magic and murder mix beneath the surface of ordinary life, nothing—and no one—is exactly what they seem.

If you enjoy the perfect combination of murder mystery and the paranormal blended with a dash of romance, you’ll love this series.

This was a great story and a great start of a new series. This was also my first introduction to this author, and apart from anticipating the next book in this series, I think I will start reading the other works of this author because she is great. Her writing is impeccable, characters well rounded and developed, world is well built and full of mystery, and she added some unexpected and interesting creatures and mysteries.
I devoured the story immediately, It was interesting and addictive and it drew me in after two pages. Nothing is as it seems in this book. It starts like any other crime novel, but it isn't. There are hints of romance, but it is not the focus of the story. Just when you think some weird shifter showed up, it is not a shifter. And what seems to be behind the veil - isn't, it is something else, and way more sinister. As I said, interesting and addictive.
As for the characters, they are wonderful. Oona is a bit of a loner, not surprising considering her abilities, but she is brave, strong and thinks it is the right thing to do to help people in need and stop the killer. She is an exceptionally lovable character. Oh, and she is an ice hockey player.
Then there is Diego, very charming wizard, maybe a bit arrogant, but still very likable. There is an abundance of chemistry between them, and the buildup is very well executed. There are some additional very interesting characters, of which Maurice was my absolute favourite, and that is all I'm going to say, you have to experience that character yourself.
Although I am eagerly anticipating the next book, this one does have a definite ending, and that is not the reason for my anticipation. I just loved this book and want more. This book can be read as a standalone, as it has a really interesting and well developed crime/mystery solving plot with a resolution.

I am 69 and like multi-layered paranormal mysteries. This is definitely written for YA but I still enjoyed it. The description of what Oona experiences as an empathic/psychic aligns with books written by such people in real life, so Alexes has some personal experience or at least has done her homework. The magic and demons are fantasy but described convincingly. The only part that seemed formulaic was the romance: the introverted heroine has to work with a somewhat annoying wizard who is, of course, fairly handsome and athletic, and (as Maurice, the talking rat, predicts) inevitably, well, the sex is tastefully handled off-screen. The characters and their interactions, the mysteries and plot twists, are complex enough to maintain interest. I immediately read #2 in the series and I'd give that a 4.5, and I already bought #3. The only reason I did not get this sooner is that it is not available on Audible. Why not? This looks like a fun series.

It is always nice to find a book in the UF genre that is original and as a plus has likeable characters. 'Ice Cold Death' meets both of those criteria and does it with style. Both MCs are not of the super badass variety, although over the length of the book they almost get there. Also, both of them, Diego and Oona are very human even with their gift of magic and seeing them mature and grow as individuals and as a couple puts a very nice spin on what is a romance and murder mystery. Looking forward to the other books in the series.

1st by this author and it was a nice mystery. The MMC & FMC felt 2 dimensional to me, sort of flat. This is the 2nd time I read this book, as I DNF the first go around. I don't feel invested in these characters, so I will not continue with the series. I tip my hat to all authors and writers, but this one, just isn't for me.

This isn’t a bad start for a series. The heroine is smart, gutsy and pretty likeable. The hero is okay too. I’m not a jock so I didn’t find a lot in common with her, but since the sports stuff was kept to a minimum I didn’t find it distracting. The mystery wasn’t really a mystery since the real killer is identified halfway through the story. This more of a how do we catch him than a whodunnit, but it worked out okay.

This series is a fun mashup of the traditional detective genre, magic, and romance.

Oona Goodlight is an introvert, hockey playing, empathic, psychic. She lives in a beach house designed and built by an ancestor. She cherishes her privacy because being out in the world where the wash of emotions bombard her is detrimental to her health.

In this first novel in the series, Oona is introduced into the official magical world when her hockey team enters the rink to practice and find a member of their team dead on the ice. It turns out the substitute goalie, Diego Adair, is a wizard who helps Oona regain her balance when the emotions and visions of the murder nearly incapacitate her.

Meeting Diego, or Dee as she comes to call him, changes her life in ways she could never have imagined. During the investigation, Oona meets a magical rat who helps with the investigation. She also meets Dee’s mentor, The Gate, Gill a magical tattoo artist, and a magical bookstore owner. Oh, and a little romance is thrown into the story as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone looking for something unusual.

Great start to this urban fantasy mystery series. The author did an excellent job of building the relationship of Dee and Oona. I am definitely starting book 02 immediately to see how they continue their teamwork of magic, friendship, and romance, combined with humor and a little mystery. I really liked the way the magic is revealed, and the future exploration into their world. Very excited to have multiple books in the series to continue the adventure.

I really enjoyed this story, I liked both the lead characters Oona the secretive empathic psychic and Diego the powerful Wizard. When Oona just wanted to practice Ice Hockey with her teammates not find the body of an acquaintance on the ice, or to have a vision of the murder and murderer. Diego a private investigator and Wizard asks her to assist in the investigation and this is just the start of the problems.. An very entertaining storyline combines modern day America but were magic and paranormal powers are real and parallel other realms exist. A fact paced well written book. Narration is excellent and makes the story easy to listen to and enjoy.

Saw this advertised on face book and thought I would give it a go.
I actually enjoyed it, Oona and Dee make a good team. There aren't a lot of characters so you don't get confused or have different characters thoughts or what they think, like some books where you get one character's perspectives then another character's so you lose some of the story as you have to go back and check which character you are actually reading.
This was straight forward and a good read. One reason I didn't give it five stars, the staff in the office are only mentioned after the first interview she has and Oona doesn't seem to meet them again. The woman and child we are left to believe the other staff have solved and not if it was who Oona and Dee thought. Oona has started work and spends more time off. It's silly things like that that spoilt this story. Apart from that it is a good read 👍
