By H.S. Clark
Wow, I must say that this medical thriller was one of the very best books that I’ve read this month. As I read over 40 books per month that makes this one an excellent read. With exciting characters. The main character Dr. Paul Powers an anesthesiologist has his work cut out for him as the Cascade Killer is taking lives and causing havoc. Officer Jackey McCann and Sgt. Frank Roberts receives the call and find Jenny Walker on the verge of death’s door. She survives only to find herself back at the hospital four months later pregnant with the child of the killer. There is no question that H.S. Clark has the knowledge to write an exciting story. I could not sleep until I had finished this story. There are quite a few twists and turns and it keeps you wondering who could be the killer? One of my favorite lines from the story. “Our efforts to control nature with technology actually propels evolution forward.” And another, “Viruses are like pirate ships in the night, they commandeer the cellular machinery of the host, and turn it to their own use. They insert new DNA and take over the cells of the host.” The character that I liked least in the story was Dr. Arens. The character I liked most was Dr. Paul Powers. One more sentence that I really liked. “That’s the fundamental problem with the scientific method. The more we seek ultimate truth, the further we travel from it.” I rated this story a solid 5 star rating. Well written and I would enjoy reading more by H.S. Clark an extremely talented storyteller.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2017Well-researched, packed with unique and interestingly developed characters, and strong enough to stand on its own two legs within a series, IMMORTAL FEAR is a fantastic addition to the Dr. Powers medical thriller books.
I’m not usually into medical thrillers, but picked this up after finding the blurb too intriguing to resist. Diving into the first chapter, you find yourself immediately immersed in the fast paced plot of murder mystery means hospital drama, described with enough technical detail to make it convincing and enough emotional punch to make it enveloping. The fact that the author doesn’t have “doctor” at the beginning of his title surprises me.
Dr. Powers has an interesting blend of uncertainty and a drive for truth that you don’t see in many leading medical characters. Within the first chapter, he nearly kills an influential character because of a flub in his examination, and that instantly set a tone for a book that would have me on the edge of my seat for every procedure and plot point following. Yet there’s constantly a sense of intelligence and experience surrounding him that keeps him an intriguing character to watch.
My only complaint is that the writing style could be jittery at times, as if the author lost his train of thought and was just fitting in what felt “pretty okay” for some descriptions. It broke the rhythm at points and required me to reread and contemplate to understand what they were getting at in terms of atmosphere. But overall, the medical terminology was solid and immersive, the tension strong and fast-paced, and the characters truly relatable.
If you’re into medical thrillers, then this book will definitely earn a place on your shelf. If you’re so-so on the genre, then it’s still worth picking up. Just brace yourself; it can get pretty gruesome at points, especially during that abortion scene.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2017A pretty interesting premise thwarted by some fantastical, unrealistic, and unnecessary plot devices that stand in stark contrast to the story's medical details which serve to add a strong flavor of plausibility to the tale.
Reworked with a more subtle and clever actions, this yarn could be a block buster.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2018“Immortal Fear A Medical Thriller” by author H. S. Clark is the story of an immortal killer, as one person commented, ‘that won’t stay dead’. It is a truly exciting, metaphysical story enshrouding the horror of the undead; it totally encapsulates the greatest human nightmare, that of not being able to stop an attacker, a killer, no matter what is attempted.
This book is very well written and is just an excellent read. I commend H. S. Clark for having one of the most active imaginations and ‘real life’ settings and explanations in their work, of any author I have read. This brilliant, very scary story seduces the reader. Don’t be involved in other activities while reading this book. You will not want to put it down… perhaps even after you have finished reading it.
I loved all the details, the plot and subplots, and also the great sense of humor the author must have. This was shown in the wonderful dialog pieces.
I am happy with my purchase of “Immortal Fear” and would recommend it to anyone who loves a good bone chilling tale. I don’t recommend reading it late at night… but that’s up to you. I would gladly purchase the book again and plan on reading it again soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2016About one-third through the kindle version, I wondered if I were going to encounter humans isolated in modules on a conveyor belt. Sorry - cannot recall the name of the book or author that ends with that vivid scene. Anyhow, Clark's medical mystery was more believable, a bit like science fiction, but involving real people with real sensations and challenges. The descriptions of bodily reactions to various drugs seemed informative; I assume those can be verified. The mad professor who defies institutional review and US standards for research is believable. What if behavioral traits could be modified by purposeful, viral penetration of DNA?????
