Can headstrong Marianne find her place in respectable society?

Regency England

Marianne Carstairs has unexpectedly inherited a fortune from a father she has never known.

In the will, her trustee —
Marquess Justin Raymond — is tasked with introducing her into respectable society.

But as the manager of her family’s farm, Marianne is reluctant to leave behind her life of freedom and independence.

What’s more, she finds Justin high-handed and stubborn.

At the insistence of her grandfather, Marianne agrees to stay with Justin and his family at their Somerset estate, Lunswick Hall.

But as their relationship grows stormy, Justin sees that it might prove impossible to turn his ward into a debutante…

The Impossible Ward by Dorothy Mack is a classic Regency Romance with a spirited, intelligent heroine.

I enjoyed this one more than the first of Dorothy Mack’s novels I read, for sure! It was pretty sweet, clean, but didn’t have me in doldrums like The Substitute Bride did. Not to say the other was bad; it was good, but I felt I related to the characters in this one better.

    5 stars.

The plot is good and the author writes the emotions well, however, the "heroine" was not a sympathetic character. I found her much too hard headed and prejudice and miscommunication where it mattered. I pity the hero for falling for this oddly immature woman. (She was frustratingly Very smart but, Very prideful & ignorant). This novella also needs some better editing. There are a number of awkwardly worded sentences, wrong word usages & grammar mistakes. (I submitted suggestions for corrections on some of them). Overall, this reads like a sophomore effort at writing & needs some polishing.

This is a most enjoyable book, once again Ms Mack brings a number of characters into the story, giving a little more interest to the story. The setting was pleasing and I found I could picture the gardens, forested areas and the fields.

A long lost daughter comes into an inheritance, with a handsome lord as trustee. Not raised in high society and with a mind of her own, Lady Marianne Carstairs makes new friends and enemies while falling in love... This book is well written with good character and reltationship development. It is old fashioned (1978)and thus skips both truncated writing and explicit sex. However, it is a satisfying romance and I enjoyed it.

This book is a treat. A straightforward regency with no jarring modernisms and a good grip on what constitutes a decent read.

Dorothy Mack is a good heir of Georgette Heyer. She has similar eyes for detail and a good flair for writing historical romances. This story has panned out well.
