- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2020I don't want to sound too grandiose about this; but it's really true -- one of my favourite things about reading early Gibson novels was the peculiar, charming turn of phrase that I'd find with delight like a pearl in the midst of a paragraph that was otherwise merely masterful. I am reminded of that from time to time by similar gems in this book. It is first-rate cyberpunk and kept me up quite late as, once begun, I had no choice but to finish the book straight through. Very high quality writing and a pleasure to read.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020Excellent read, great characters, exciting new tech possibilities, believable and introduces an awesome new drug! The characters pain was palpable and relatable.Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2020I liked the words in the book! And the characters are very unique. And San Francisco in the future ... because I know San Francisco now. "In My Memory Locked" opened the door for a different life, in a different world since I was born in the late 1940s. And, the characters as they were introduced chapter by chapter gave the next part of the story a reason to continue every page. The story will remain "In MY Memory Locked"!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2020I am, perhaps, the perfect reader of this book. A student of Hammett-Chandler-Stout with a career in software engineering. First, I have to say that the technical premise of the book is just barely technically plausible. A could-be but highly unlikely scenario in which the entire record of a once viral video is contained in a single physical memory block. Possible, but engineering alarm bells keep going off in my head. Only an incompetent would permit this to happen. I freely admit that this is a technical hang-up and probably not an issue for most readers, but for me, a nagging concern.
Mr. Nelson knows his genre and he knows the patterns of detective noir. I was both taken in by the narrative itself and my critical judgement marveled at Nelson's understanding of the classic American private detective novel. He plays the genre as a master. His language, dialog, settings, and narrative are all superb. I found his Chandleresque similies and metaphors slightly strained. I often felt he was imitating the master rather than yielding to his own lyrical soul. Nevertheless, his words are good, very good.
The plot is complex and the resolution not entirely satisfying to me, but compelling, and I intend to reread this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2020It’s so nice when you have high hopes for a book and then the author delivers on all fronts. Nelson writes about San Francisco with intimate insight and a great eye for detail. The plot gets you hooked right away and then keeps surprising you until the end leaves you gasping. Loved the premise of the Nexternet and the “old” internet stored on Alcatraz and getting hacked. You can tell Nelson has absorbed noir like Chandler and Hammett, but he transfers them so smoothly into the sci-fi genre that he moves beyond mere homage and creates something all of his own. Before watching reruns of Blade Runner on Netflix, do yourself a favor and check out this gem of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ingenious Plot
When I award 5 stars, it doesn't follow that the book was War and Peace. It relates to my enjoyment of the experience. I do most of my reading for pleasure before lights out, and I found myself looking forward to bed time so I could get back to the story. Cyber noir is the right descriptive, and the read is well worth the while.
