A Game of Clans: collectores venatoresque, agricolae pastoresque and A Clash of Chiefs: rex militaris, rex sacrorum are the first and second volumes of the series of books A Song of Sheep and Horses. These two volumes address the Proto-Indo-European Urheimat or homeland problem from a wide anthropological perspective, using archaeology and cultural and biological anthropology. More specifically, this first book integrates the most recent genetic research with the prevalent anthropological theories on migration routes from the Palaeolithic to the advent of the Bronze Age. Beyond a precise physical location of North-West Indo-Europeans, Late Proto-Indo-Europeans, and Uralians, archaeology and population genomics can offer important hints about the actual material culture, society, economy, religious beliefs, and political organization of each of these ancestral groups.

1.0 out of 5 stars For a collector of facts, not for the armchair archaeologist.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 20, 2022
This is not a book for anyone seeking a stimulating account of the early Bronze Age and the spread of Indo-European language. It is a collection of facts on genetics, linguistics and related archaeology. There is little to draw it into a coherent, readable whole for the armchair archaeologist. As the writer says, "It is an encyclopaedia-like text, free and organised in more or less isolated linguistic, archaeological and genetic sections organised to facilitate future revisions by everyone, incorporating the latest research". A pity this was not made clear to the purchaser. I was hoping for an updated treatment of the subject akin to Anthony's, 'The Horse, the Wheel and Language'. It is self published and the book binding is poor: three pages fell out within an hour of my starting to read.
