Inherit My Heart: A charming romantic novel (Mary Burchell Romance Novels) Kindle Edition
Can Naomi secure her future while keeping her heart intact?
England, 1962
Since the death of her father, eighteen-year-old Naomi Thurrock and her mother have relied on a quarterly allowance from a wealthy but cantankerous relative, Enoch Tenderleigh. When Enoch dies, both are shocked to be left only with a small annuity on which to survive.
However, Naomi soon receives an invitation to stay at Foley Grange — the estate that Enoch left behind — to meet his heir. Hoping that they mean to offer financial assistance, Naomi’s mother urges her to accept.
Finding Enoch’s heir, Jerome Fennell, to be somewhat dark and cynical, Naomi doubts he will be willing to offer any aid. But to her surprise, Jerome — a successful theatre producer — increases the annuity and gives her a job as his assistant.
Caught up in the glamorous world of theatre, Naomi soon comes to admire Jerome’s talent and vision. And as they spend more and more time in each other’s company, she begins to wonder whether their tentative alliance could blossom into something more…
INHERIT MY HEART is a classic historical romance set in 1960s England. This heart-warming coming of age story will have you rooting for the heroine all the way.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2022I love the sweetness and innocence of Ida Cook's stories. A nice little glimpse in to the theater world. A quick and enjoyable read!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2015Don't get those three stars wrong. I usually love this author, but every writer has slow days and that's what this one seemed: slow. I felt that the first fifteen pages were unnecessary and she should have started when our heroine was on the train saying to a perfect stranger (who turns out to be someone of importance to the people our heroine is going to visit): "I'm the poor relation going to visit unknown rich ones. I feel a bit like Cinderella--without the benefit of a godmother."
The other girl retorts, "But Cinderella got her man, didn't she?"
That's the sort of fun dialogue you can expect from this author. On the other hand, besides the start being a bit slow, I didn't find the hero all that appealing, and I usually do with Mary Burchell, but at least the heroine is no doormat. When the hero, Jerome, the heir who inherited in place of the heroine's mother, is being nasty and mocking to her, suggesting she's out for what she can get, Naomi, the heroine, says to him: "I see you don't like half-truths....At least, only cynical half-truths that you prefer to deal out yourself." When he protests, she says "You asked for it."
Not surprisingly, since Jerome is used to being treated deferentially, due to his money and standing, this kind of treatment catches his attention and it isn't long before we, if not our modest heroine, are aware that he's fallen for her. An enjoyable love story, if predictable and more forgettable than most Burchell novels.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2009From the back of the book: 'It was a shock to Naomi and her mother when the fortune they had confidently expected to inherit was left to someone else-a nephew they had never heard of.
However, Mrs Thurrock hoped that perhaps Naomi and Jerome might set things right by making a match of it. Which might have been a good idea, if Naomi hadn't infinitely preferred his brother Martin.'
The back of the book in incorrect, the story is: Mrs Thurrock preferred Martin, but Naomi liked Jerome much better right from the start.
And although Martin and Mrs Thurrock tried to stop the attraction, it was too late for both of them the moment they met.
