Irregular Regular: Recollections of Conflict Across the Globe (The Extraordinary Life of Colonel David Smiley Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 195 ratings

The final instalment of Colonel David Smiley’s fascinating autobiographical trilogy.

This book fills the gaps that were left by his two previous memoirs, uncovering his service in World War Two before and after being parachuted into Albania as well his thoughts on the conflicts that he was involved in through the twentieth century.

Colonel David Smiley was no ordinary soldier.

Through the course of his life he saw conflict in the Balkans, Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

After being commissioned into the Household Cavalry in 1936 and seeing action in the Middle East, he subsequently trained and fought with the Commandos, was recruited into Churchill’s Special Operations Executive, co-operated with MI6 and the SAS, and provided aid to resistance movements across the globe.

Even his service within the regular army was never ordinary; he was frequently the first to be called upon by superiors to lead dangerous missions in Syria and Persia and later served in lightly-armoured dummy tanks in the Western Desert facing German Stukas and powerful Axis tanks.

From Syria to Thailand, Smiley’s bravery, abilities in clandestine warfare, and leadership unified the men he led and caused havoc to enemy forces.

His autobiography, which covers from his entrance into the military before the Second World War to his return to Albania in 1992 after the fall of Communist rule, records a remarkable life spent fighting in regular forces as well as in cloak-and-dagger operations and demonstrates how varied conflict was during the twentieth century.

“Smiley’s latest book completes a trilogy of memoirs of times of war and troubled peace and provides setting for his previous books Arabian Assignment and Albanian Assignment.”

Fighting during and after WW2 in obscure places like Albania, Yemen, Oman, and Thailand, the Colonel tells an honest tale of what it was like, Intriguing.

Very interesting and readable. Lots of overlap with his Yemen and Albanian books. But still worth reading for the extra coverage.

A story that spread over many theatres of war showing the brat of indigenous forces and the machinations of political leaders of the various parties, brought home the USA's early interests in the far east Vietnam in particular and their plotting during the far east campaign,Particularly liked the chapter in the middle east and the authors returning to Albania and their welcoming by the democratic government in power after the communists debacle a good read with plenty of high point and humour

4.0 out of 5 stars Where have the photos gone?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 30, 2021
Bought 'Albanian Assignment' and 'Arabian Assignment' at the same time as 'Irregular Regular' and a little disappointed. I already have a battered SPHERE 1985 edition of 'Albanian' and wanted a new good copy. However this new edition does not include the photograph section that was in the 1985 edition. This is a shame as the photographs help to give give the book its unique flavour. I note that photographs are not included in the other two and assume they have been left out in the same manner. Having said all that what a cracking good read, and how lucky we were to have such men as David Smiley.

4.0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary career of an extraordinary man.

On the positive side its an interesting and easy read, flowing nicely in a manner that would make some writers envious. On the negative side I felt there where gaps in the biography/story that spoiled an otherwise flawless book. One was obviously the period in Oman which was saved for another book by the author. On the whole I admire his book and salute your service to this country.
