The Many Lives of Jimmy Leighton Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 46 ratings

Smalltime Boston thief Jimmy Leighton stumbles into a perilous quantum experiment – and a bullet – propelling him down the multiple paths his life might have taken in this exciting, innovative thriller by Dave Thomas and Max Allan Collins.

Jimmy Leighton has only two things going for him – his bad boy skills and a good woman’s love. In debt to a Vietnamese mob boss, Jimmy needs a score, and hits a nondescript house with a high-tech laboratory tucked away in the basement. With no idea what he’s looking at, Jimmy accidentally activates a quantum machine and is simultaneously shot by another intruder, sending him two places at once – a Boston hospital in a coma, and a Chicago penthouse apartment in another version of his life.

The petty crook has inadvertently become the guinea pig of MIT physicist Dr. Neil Goldman, whose research into the Many Worlds Theory opens a multi-dimensional portal of possibilities. Before Jimmy can adjust to his new life as a rich man in Chicago, he finds himself in a boxing ring being pummeled by a formidable opponent. Unable to control these transitions, Jimmy hops from one version of his life to another, each becoming more challenging and dangerous than the last.

Concurrently, Cambridge detectives Sam Neer and Taylor Farr – a crusty Black cop uncomfortably paired with a young female partner – remain in Jimmy’s original world, trying to solve the mystery of who shot the little thief from Southie. Their investigation draws them into the treacherous worlds of Boston crime and industrial espionage.

“The collaboration works... It is the perfect marriage of Collins and Thomas’ sensibilities, one that will delight readers.”—SCREENRANT

Jimmie Leighton is a small-time crook looking to get out and settle down to a regular
no-crime life. When he needs some big time money for a Vietnamese crook, he decides
to pull a break in to a science professor's house. Something goes wrong and he finds
himself in another reality, and then another. Can he get back to the life he knows?

A great off-beat book! I thought the police procedural aspect was a drawing point for me
and helps to keep the book from going off the rails. I would recommend it to anyone looking
for something different and original. Fantastic job by all involved!

Science fiction and mystery fans will enjoy this first pairing of Dave Thomas and Max Allan Collins. You can read the story summary for yourself. Both writers do a great job of explaining just enough of the science that got Jimmy into this mess without burying the reader in unnecessary science talk. The detectives investigating the case are a great pair as well and I hope to see further adventures with them. The only "disappointment" in the book is that Jimmy doesn't say "oh, boy..." at least once while he caroms from life to life.

This is not the sort of book I generally read, but I could not put it down! Dave Thomas - of SCTV fame - weaves a sci-fi, murder mystery that holds elements of humor, romance, and genuine scientific theory that truly engages the reader. You can tell the authors have done their homework, which makes it so believable. Delivered quickly, in perfect condition from Amazon.

This sci-fi/mystery smash-up is my idea of a fun read. By that I mean that it melds genres as if there was never a question they belong together. In this case, that includes two kinds of mysteries, the classic whodunit and a police procedural (complete with bickering police partners, of course). As if that were not enough, the quantum theory of many worlds is added for good measure. I usually avoid books co-written by celebrities with actual writers. In this case, the pairing of SCTV alum Thomas and master mystery writer Collins feels like a most inspired one. I actually hope there's more books from these two. Four and a half stars.

Wow, my head is spinning. Jimmy, small-time thief from south Boston, stumbles across a quantum physics experiment setting him on a journey through a "many world universe". The authors have a lot of fun taking us through a number of parallel worlds through the eyes of Jimmy. While all this is going on detectives Neer and Farr work in the original world on solving an ever expanding crime while overcoming an oil and water relation (black veteran and young woke female). The authors make it all work, well-paced, interesting characters, science which seems plausible.

I definitely am hoping for a Neer and Farr series by Thomas and Collins.

I am a big fan of Dave Thomas from his SCTV days. Had not known he was also a writer \producer on Blacklist and Bones. Max Allan Collins is on of my favorite authors, and while I like some of his series more than others, all are well written. I received this book as a give away from the author in return for an honest review. HIGHLY recommended.

The most immediate comparison that will come to mind is Quantum Leap meets Stabler & Benson (Law & Order)! This has all the charm & humor of the beloved Bakula TV series, but takes it some surprisingly dark twists & turns along the way that would make the latter series proud. Collins & Thomas have spun an intricate tale of 'what ifs?' with an affable, loveable, occasionally frustrating protagonist! NOT REALLY A SPOILER COMING UP, BUT A CONCEPTUAL INQUIRY FOR THOSE WHO ENJOY SUCH THINGS: The ending brought to mind an intriguing question touched upon indirectly by our man Jimmy, but completely ignored by another character: is committing quantum suicide the same as committing quantum murder? READ THIS BOOK, think about it and get back to me!
