Kelly Park: A Cornish romantic saga Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 47 ratings

A 20th-century romantic saga set in Cornwall! Perfect for fans of Liz Fenwick, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Fern Britton and Phillipa Ashley.

Can Cornish dreams come true?

Cornwall, 1978

Leaving London, a French bistro and an unfaithful lover behind, chef
Flavia Pollard moves to Cornwall in search of new beginnings.

Her friend Humphrey Jarvis owns the dilapidated estate of Parc Celli, known as Kelly Park, and he commissions Flavia to reinvent it as a country house hotel.

It seems like a dream come true. But dreams are never that simple.

With mounting costs, a looming deadline and a string of uninvited visitors, including roguish
Tom Faull and the dapper Jack Rice, Flavia unexpectedly finds herself falling in love…

Can Flavia win over the locals and restore Kelly Park to its former glory? Has she found someone to mend her broken heart?

And could Cornwall become the place she can call home?

Kelly Park is a beautifully evocative historical British romance with an independent and ambitious heroine, set in wild and windy Cornwall during the 1970s.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Almost 40, divorced, Flavia Polland is forced to choose a new direction for her life after her lover and partner in their popular London bistro abandons both her and the business in 1978. As this high-spirited and lovingly detailed novel reveals, the process can be painful and hazardous. Flavia rethinks her options at Parc Celli (anglicized to Kelly Park), the venerable but faded Cornwall estate of old friend and man-about-town Humphrey Jarvis. Quickly grasping the possibilities inherent in the old manor house, she suggests turning it into a first-rate inn: gracious, hospitable and, of course, enhanced by her own renowned cooking. Humphrey is ambivalent, but agrees and promises cash. The clannish townspeople, wary at first, warm to Flavia as they recognize the prospect of steady employment. And Humphrey's old friend, roguish Tom Faull, shows up to organize a colorful workforce of idiosyncratic villagers. But, as Stubbs ( Light in Summer ) chronicles Flavia's exploits with wry wit, nothing proceeds as planned. Her tale is a well-orchestrated mix of complex personalities and lush countryside locale linked by ingenious plotting.

From Library Journal

Flavia Pollard, chef extraordinaire and divorced mother of two teenage boys, reassesses her life after dissolving a seven-year business and amorous partnership with ne'er-do-well Jack Rice. She lights on the idea of restoring the long-neglected Cornwall manor house of her dear, sentimental old friend, Humphrey, and turning it into a country inn. When he grudgingly agrees, she sets to work, dealing vigorously along the way with a profusion of problems and encountering a lively assortment of people. Filled with fresh, humorous dialog, affectionate depictions of fully fleshed-out characters, interesting turns of plot, insights into English country life, and delectable descriptions of culinary delights, this new novel by the author of Like We Used To Be ( LJ 1/90) offers pure enchantment to the mind, heart, and palate. Highly recommended.

I've read this book a dozen times over the years. My mother and sisters read it. It's definitely a romance, but I really like the additional parts of the story. A woman taking a chance on herself, building her own business/home in a beautiful setting. It's definitely one of my favorite 'cozy' books.

Kelly Park is the story of a woman forced to start over at age 40, as challenges and charming but frustrating characters nip at her heels. Perhaps the most charming one of all is a man she'd never fall for back in London. But in Cornwall, he manages to get under her skin.

Flavia Pollard is a chef, trying to turn an old manor house into a bed-and-breakfast inn. She's got a variety of obstacles to overcome, but she finds help and romance along the way.

I bought this book in paperback form about 16-17 years ago. It is one of those books you hold on to, and read again and again. Why? The characters are so real: You can see them. Sometimes you read a book, and the descriptions and development of certain characters call to mind actors or celebrities. In this book, the characters form themselves, with no help from existing personas or stereotypes.

There is a line from the book that has stuck with me all this time...something to do with "opportunities that turned out to be traps" and it has stayed with me all these years. We all run into those traps and its what we do with them that sets us apart.

Read this book and learn how, and meet a cast of unforgettable people along the way.
