Always considered a Watcher, Flynn, the ninth daughter of the ninth daughter, savior of her people, has finally touched her magic in front of witnesses, a deep magic unknown for centuries. Rather than solve Flynn's problem's however this just adds to the troubles of her everyday life and now her best friend Hazel is missing! Flynn must find a way to solve these problems but Hazel always has the best plans. On her first but far from last adventure of this installment Flynn and Po have to rescue Hazel who is lost in Dreamwood Forest. This is book two in a series about a young witch who was supposed to be the saviour of her people who were up against a powerful evil witch. Flynn has previously considered herself a dud, called a Watcher. She has a small key she believes is important. She now learns that she can astral travel and managed to save the life of her best friend, and then, as she is still learning what powers she might possess, and to prevent her people putting too great demands on her, too soon, goes off on a Seeking, along with her quirky falcon.
She makes an unexpected astral trip to the past, where she sees a man who is probably her father and finds her key fits into his trunk just before his ship gets wrecked. She and the falcon search for and find the trunk. The book ends after Flynn uses a map in the trunk to guide her on an astral trip to find the evil witch.

Flynn is enchanting, and I love her relationship with Oturu, the falcon, and Hazel and Po. As the power in Flynn's magic evolves, there is hope she will be able to defeat the evil Magadalena and unite the two halves of the book. Really great story, Rue!!!! I read it at lunch at work every day.

I really enjoyed the book since he's always been different than everyone in her clan thinking she was without magic now she has to journey to discover how it works. Along the way she discovers pieces of her past she never knew existed.

I read the first book so quickly I couldn't wait to see what Flynn and Hazel would experience in the second series...such beautiful journey with unexpected twists and wonderful adventures...you get lost in this tale and I can't wait to finish the series...I'm buying book three as soon as possible!

I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was so easy to get caught up in Flynn's journey of self discovery and self acceptance. I am going to make a prediction that this book will be my favorite of the series because I think it really touches the reader and, we feel for the first time, Flynn's self acceptance, which is a really important and hard characteristic to obtain. I feel we see true growth in her as a person, friend, daughter, and "witch". This book will probably set the stage for who Flynn will become as an adult. It was her coming of age story and I cannot wait to see how it continues and who she becomes. I am sure there will be setbacks in her future, however, I believe this book set the groundwork for her true character and how she will handle herself as she is presented with future obstacles.

5.0 out of 5 stars secret agendas and hidden motives
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 25, 2017
Key to the Journey is the second book in The Chronicles of Hawthorne, and like the first book is a fantastic read. It picks up from where book one finishes. Flynn is dragged before the coven, and the latest discovery ensures she is removed from all her initiate training. Hazel speeds to Dreamwood Forest hoping to seek the aid of the three hundred year old witch within, and realised too late that she lacks the skill to ensure she reaches there safely. She awakes to find herself a prisoner of the forest, hunted and stalked by unseen predictors. Flynn, fearing for her friend risks all to save her  unaware these are the first steps of her own long and dangerous journey.
This is yet another skilfully woven tale by author Rue. I find it hard to believe I finished it so quickly. The book barely left from my hand from the moment I opened it. I was captivated by the story, eager to discover what lay in store for Flynn. More depth is added to characters as we witness the blooming and strengthening of relationships, and uncover secret agendas and hidden motives. The danger Flynn is destined to stop draws ever closer, and more truth about her origins come to light. I can't wait to pick up book three.
