The King's Commoner: The rise and fall of Cardinal Wolsey (The Tudor Saga Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 742 ratings

The infamous Tudor king, Henry VIII, is on the throne! Perfect for fans of Conn Iggulden, Robyn Young, Alison Weir and Anthony Riches.

Men rise and fall from power in Henry VIII’s treacherous court...

Tudor England

Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Lord Chancellor of England and Archbishop of York owes his favoured status to the most volatile monarch that the nation has ever known.

In an age when a man can be a royal favourite one day, and consigned to an unspeakable death the next, Wolsey walks the tightrope above his many enemies.

Chief among these is the bullying Duke of Norfolk, scion of a noble family who bitterly resents the preferment of a butcher’s son to positions of power and influence that he regards as his by birth.

Norfolk sees his chance when Wolsey fails King Henry VIII in his attempt to secure the annulment of his marriage to Katherine of Aragon, so Anne Boleyn can be made Queen.

In the maelstrom of Tudor politics, Wolsey learns the hard way that loyalty and ability will not protect a fallen favourite from the sting of royal wrath…

The King’s Commoner is the second thrilling historical adventure novel in the Tudor Saga Series, chronicling the rise and fall of one of England’s most powerful royal families.

David was born in post-war Nottingham, and educated at Nottingham High School. After obtaining a Law degree he became a career-long criminal law practitioner and academic, emigrating in 1989 to Australia, where he still lives.

Combining his two great loves of History and the English language he began writing historical novels as an escape from the realities of life in the criminal law, but did not begin to publish them until close to fulltime retirement, when digital publishing offered a viable alternative to literary agencies, print publishers and rejection slips.

Now blessed with all the time in the world, his former hobby has become a fulltime occupation as he enjoys life in rural New South Wales with his wife, sons and grandchildren to keep him firmly grounded in the reality of the contemporary world.

I enjoyed this book very much that I had a hard time putting it down so I could get some sleep. I never knew much about him so this was an eye opener. For a man to rise as high from being a commoner ,to a cardinal, close friend and adviser to the king, friends to Catherine was something. Of it was bound to happen once Henry hooked up with Ann that Henry would turn on his friend. But the way he died I felt so sorry for that you could almost feel the pain he was in.but the bottom line I felt this was very good book and can't wait to read the next book

I thoroughly enjoyed this second book of the series and look forward to my pre ordered copy of the third book. Very well done and I love this version of the account of Cardinal Wolsey's life. There are always many versions of the truth and the more I read about the Tudor court the more I see how people twist the truth to their purposes. History repeats itself.

David brings the life of Cardinal Wolsey into a view that only received a brief glimpse in Hilary Mantel's 'Wolf Hall,' itself an enjoyable read. I am grateful I happened upon his books, and plan to read them all.

As I said of the first book in the series, this is not a light read. But if you are an Anglophile like me this book, this series, is not to be missed. The author wraps historical fact into an engaging story which, while subject to poetic license, stays true to history as we know it. This one was particularly good.

I have read many books about the Tudor court ,and those at its center, but rarely have I read one so well written that I couldn’t put it down. The author brings the cardinal to life and tells his story in full color.

I enjoyed the book but wish it would have went into the mind of Wosley especially at the time of his downfall. If you like a quick read about Wosley then this book is for you.

This book gave a unique perspective to The character. The story has been told so often but rarely has it ever mention anything about the cardinal and how much influence he had on Henry the eighth. Can’t wait to read the next one

Interesting book from the perspective of Thomas Wolsey rather than those around him. Good book 2 in the series. Looking forward to book 3.

I have very much enjoyed reading this story about Cardinal Wolsey. I learned a lot about his life, the politics of this period. Very interesting and never boring. I will read more books by the author. Highly recommended for readers of historical fiction about real characters.

I love Tudor history and was really pleased to read this book on the life of Thomas Wolsey. Of course there is poetic license taken by Mr Field, but it brought Wolsey's side of the story alive for me. 😀

This is a well thought out book about the life of Cardinal Wolsey within his service to King Henry VIII.
It is a very frank expose of the rise of the Cardinal from very humble beginnings to being second only to the King himself.
Unfortunately he appears to have made many enemies along the way who delighted in his fall from grace.
Looking forward to the next instalment, concentrating on Thomas Cromwell and his rise to fame!
