- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2017I loved most of the stories in this collection, the rest were bad either. Some are very scary, while others just so sad, but all in all it is a great read. You will find, murder, mystery, intrigue, and quite a lot of ghosts in this book. Although, not all stories are ghostly. The best part is that every story is complete and there are quite a few of them for readers to enjoy, be scared, and fall in love with... ghosts. I have. :) It's a great read and I'd definitely recommend it to my fellow readers.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2018It was the gorgeous cover that drew me to this book, and the inventive stories that kept me reading. Fans of the of short story will appreciate this collection that offers a full range of intriguing reads. Original and nicely written, Kissed by Literature scores five stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2018These short stories all seem to be slightly spooky, with some form of loss in them (to a greater or lesser degree). While there are a couple I didn't like so much, most were really good, and it's a great short story collection, with all the stories being of a length that's suitable for reading during a meal break, commute etc - very handy! But be warned, once you start reading, you will want to continue to the next story... And the next... Until suddenly you've reached the end of the collection!
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions
Individual Story Reviews:
Evil That Walks Tweed Road (5*)
I liked this short story as it's kind of a "justice served" situation.
My Brother, My Savior (4*)
Both creepy and violent (albeit off-screen), this short story is definitely not for the faint of heart!
Water Park Haunts (4*)
This is a funny short, where a good intention seems truly to go wrong for a poor inept ghost hunter!
Bradley on the Mirror (5*)
Great story and love the different format
Against the Red Accent Wall (5*)
Lovely story, absolutely beautiful.
Christmas Land (4*)
Liked the story but felt it ended a big prematurely.
Weeping Orphanage (4*)
Goes from the silly to the spine-shivering twist in the tale.
Dodd Asylum (5*)
I love the interweaving of the creepy and the mundane!
Femur in the Farmhouse (5*)
Slightly spooky yet sweet at the same time.
Laura’s House (4*)
So sad
Little Greg Hatchett (5*)
I liked the way you see what happened from everyone's viewpoint. And the inevitable twist in the tale is great!
Me, Ghost, and Fright (5*)
Very spooky!
Seeking Souls (5*)
A real Halloween / campfire story!
When Libby Became Danielle (3*)
I did not like this one at all. Included because of the "loss" in it I guess, but just seemed petty and vindictive actions of a crazy woman. Not a good story.
Vanilla Island (3*)
No real depth to the story and finishes prematurely. Has real potential but needs to be developed into an actual story rather than a scene from one!
Scientist Purge (4*)
Very strange story, not entirely sure what it's about!
Summer Chills (5*)
Liked the simplicity of this story.
Ava’s Phone Call (4*)
Like a mini cozy murder mystery!
Marianne’s Halloween Party (4*)
One word - weird!
Are you Going? (5*)
Proof you should never judge a book by its cover!
Vekaria Resort (4*)
A steampunk story with modern connotations
Where Mary Grace Went (4*)
A good story, but ended before it had finished!
Scarecrow with a Clown Mask (5*)
A creepy story and definitely reinforces my dislike of clowns and scarecrows!
Amulet of Nekhbet (5*)
I loved this short story, combining ancient Egyptian mythology and archaeology with the modern day, and a magical twist. Excellent.
Ben went in the Lake (4*)
Ew! Seriously? Gross!
Sacrifice of Kotak Island (5*)
Loved the interweaving of fantasy and mythology, with a strong female protagonist.
Brinkerhoff News (5*)
Such a sweet, sad story
Blood Ink (5*)
Scary, especially in its potentially realistic nature.
Davenports of Sunset Lake (3*)
Not entirely sure of the purpose of most of the story. Feels very much like the base work for a longer one rather than a short story in its own right. Disappointing.
The Knitter (4*)
If only life was so easy that you could knit good intentions into your creations!
The Gold Man (5*)
Very original, loved it. Made the creepy statues you see everywhere now even more creepy though!
Lock the Door (4*)
Going from the grumpy mundane to the tragically sad.
Keysyr (4*)
Kind of a weird story, blending scifi, steampunk, and military/resistance genres all in one, leaving you not quite sure what happened, where, or who was good/bad!
Gypsy Doll (5*)
I loved this combination of mythology and fantasy, and the story is so imaginative.
Satin (4*)
Creepy!
House of Sixty Bells (5*)
Both sad and beautiful at the same time. A great story to finish the collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2017Fine eclectic collection of tales. Great descriptions. The ones with grandmothers in them really hit home with me. Good mix of horror, fantasy, a touch of steampunk. Well worth reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2020Though this collection of short stories was not what I was expecting, it was nevertheless an interesting read. The stories in this collection are basically ghost/scary stories. They are the kind of stories told around campfires, not super scary, but they may send a chill down your spine. I found many of them to be quite well-written and entertaining with an edge of the seat anticipation. My only complaint is I felt, as a whole, it ran a bit long. I had to take a number of breaks from it in the course of reading it.
I listened to the audio version, with numerous narrators, which really brought the stories to life.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2018This is a fun collection of short stories full of ghosts and more! I was hooked after the first section of the first story.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2017This is a paranormal, fantasy collection of short stories. I recommend this for teen and older due to the content. I am not a horror fan and was nervous at first, but was pleasantly surprised. This collection was very enjoyable. I really loved the ones with ghosts and would love to read these in full stories. This collection touches on so many emotions, a must read.
I can not really go into detail about the characters, without giving away most of the story. Even though there is a few scarier stories, there is a few softer ones, that make you think. One of my favorites has a grandmother that passes away, the way it was written gave me the feels. I really loved the details and descriptions throughout the whole collection. I will share some of my favorite passages throughout.
Favorite passages:
"Twilight painted new colors across the sky above the trees."
"It's smaller than our place, with no fancy lights or fireplaces. but it has cool old radiators that sound like dungeon chains rattling."
"The snow seemed way to pristine, like I was ruining someone's perfect painting."
"The book spines whispered to her from the shelves: You're not alone, Laura."
"It felt as though I had stepped into a fantasy novel where goblins lured in the hayloft and witches skulked in the old horse barn."
"The cold of winter slid through her clothes to lick her skin; Libby clinched her teeth."
"Wind blew the scent of the wheat off the field and the tree branches swayed, sending a dappled pattern across the girls."
"It ate his voice, giving back nothing but darkness."
"Wind blew the leaves so that they whispered to him, the voices of the past."
"Parts of her slipped away like dust, and the wood of the doll, the time and memories spent creating it, absorbed the magic and desperation."
"Sparse snowflakes fall from the sky. like feathered kisses, but the temperature isn't cold enough for my warm skin to freeze."

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun for people who like the creepy, spooky story
This was a great collection of short stories. There are a lot of stories and they're all really quick reads. Many have a bit of a twist and the twist comes almost at the very last line of the story. Admittedly, given the large number of stories, they start to get a little formulaic and the twist becomes a little predictable. If the stories were a little longer, more fully fleshed out, and there weren't so many in the collection, they would be much less predictable. That said, I read the first story with few expectations and was really impressed, wanting to read the rest. And I continued to read, even if I thought I knew how the story would go, I still wanted to read it. A lot of fun for people who like the creepy, spooky story, without a lot of gruesomeness.
