This book had so much going on, that it kept this reader hooked from the first chapter. The main characters were well developed, including all the side characters. The book had romance, lust, love, mystery, and closeness of a small town.
Stone is the eldest son of a farming family, he is hardworking, and dedicated to his small town life. When he meets Harper there is an immediate attraction, even if he considers her a city girl.
Harper is an author, with a bad case of writers block. She is talked into going to Mudville, and ends up house sitting for her great aunt. Her first impression of Stone is not a good one, yet she is attracted to him.
Several mysterious occurrences happen in the attic of Harper’s aunts house. The former resident had a big collection of journals, about the town history, and some of the residents are very interested in the information in the journals.
Stone keeps coming to Harper’s help, when intruders keeping getting into the attic. This causes them to become close, and into a relationship. Both of them are so uncertain about the relationship, but continue seeing each other.
After Agnes returns home, Harper realizes that she must return to her own home, and this causes a split between Stone and Harper. After being gone from Mudville, Harper realizes that she must return to her great aunt’s house. Just as Harper arrives at the house, Stone also arrives, and the couple reunite, and obtain their HEA.

Not sure if this is a good summer beach read or an end of summer read, or I wish I lived in a small town getaway read. Yep, It's all of those and a bit more. I have read many of Ms. Johnson's books and have always enjoyed her storylines and character development.

I liked this story overall, but I will say it seemed like a "softer" version of romance than I remember from her other books. Our couple are both in the early thirty's so I thought they might be a bit more sure of themselves, yet they were more unsure of how to have a relationship than I would have thought. Yet it did seem to fit the small-town atmosphere, at least for HIM. I'm not sure about our gal, she could have been a bit more sure of herself, come on she writes romance for a living. BUT, those things said maybe that is what made it a sweet story. Here you have two strangers getting to know each other and like so many of us, they were unsure of what to do, what to say or where they wanted it would all go. I would not call the sex scenes steamy, because the descriptor words used were more "gentle" than many romance novels, and in many ways that was a nice change. Oddly or maybe appropriately graphic sex would not have fit this book. But it's not G rated either....

I grew up in a small town in Indiana and can say the town happenings in the book were spot on! The storyline was good, and I would agree with the statement of another reviewer, I would have liked a bit more mystery or plot twist(s). The story built up a mystery with these "journal entries" and I really thought the author could have built several more chapters on the different entries of the people that were mentioned. That would have also given more time to continue to grow the love affair relationship.

I enjoyed the story, and I have already gotten the second book. I hope that I continue to read about this first couple in the second book. After all the lead men are brothers.

I also got the Audible book, I liked the performance by HIM. I thought the reader for the gal seemed older than the voice I would have thought to use. But once I got used to it, it was ok/good.

Kissing Books: An Opposites Attract Romantic Comedy (Small Town Secrets Book 1) by Cat Johnson is a very well written romantic comedy full of small town wonder! Mudville is a hoot and so is Aunt Agnes. What makes this book truly fantastic is Harper and Stone. Harper is feisty, independent, beautiful, hardworking, creative, smart and sweet while Stone is set in his ways, as wary as he is handsome, smart, hardworking, handy, protective and full of testosterone. These two are opposites in some ways, yet fit together so well in a plethora of other ones. Most notably of the steamy (risky at times!) variety.
This book is so very interesting, beyond Harper and Stone. Mudville is a panoply of “plot bunnies” on top of discovered diaries. There’s always something going on, revealed or stumbled upon for Harper especially.
Overall, despite allowing themselves to remain miserable rather than communicate, Harper and Stone do have a HEA in store and not a moment too soon. Absolutely loved this book and ready to read Book 2.

Talk about lack of communication and listening to others talk about his past causing heartache. Then there was a lot of assuming about what the other thought. Stone and Harper had instant attractions to each other but he was not impressed by her being a city girl and her mom's attitude the first time they met. Then Harper comes back to take care of Aunt Agnes' house while she is recovering from an accident overseas and can't travel home right away. Harlem didn't know she was also responsible for a bunch of farm animals in the back yard. But then someone breaks into the house while Harper is sleeping and is going through the attic where a trunk full of old journals are? Who is it and why are they there? What will Stone and Harper do when Agnes finally comes home?

Cannot stand the narrator. She reads everything like it's a Peanuts cartoon. Everything sounds like a question. And she sounds older than 30. Didn't fit, at all. Sorry, it was that annoying. The story was ok. It started to drag to be honest.

      Loved it!
I enjoyed all the characters and the quaint town of Mudville. This story had it all.
Romance fiction writer Harper quickly accepts and invitation to look after a menagerie of animals at her great aunts house in the small town of Mudville.
Whilst shes there Harper finds a way of annoying Mudville resident and farmer Stone.
It doesnt take long for their relationship to develop leading to some hot and steamy scenes.
What i loved about this book was how easy it was to read, the romance wasnt sickly sweet, no love at first sight and saccharine declarations of love within 2 seconds of meeting.
      A very good story.

      No plot spoilers
      No potential triggers
There are no grammatical or editorial errors that I can recall.
There is a tiny amount of swearing, and a couple of sex scenes each of them appropriate.
The book made me laugh out loud, it's very upbeat and sweet.
The characterisation is okay, but he is no alpha male while the FL seems more clued up than he could ever be.
The storyline is straightforward with a good balance between show and tell, although there isn't any action as such. It's just a nice little escape from reality for a little while.

Stone and Harper are just about as opposite as can be imagined but are attracted physically as soon as they see each other. Stone cannot resist coming to Harper’ s assistance at every opportunity and she’s more than happy to let him. There is humour, romance and a mystery in this story along with cute animals. What is not to love? Bring on book two!
