Editorial Reviews

Review

Kitty McKenzie is a gritty but heart warming story of a young woman in York in the Victorian era, fighting to protect her siblings and keep them together after their parents are killed. At the hands of a very good writer, my emotions rose and fell with Kitty's struggle.. Kitty is such a great character, strong, and determined not to allow the hardships she faces to get the better of her as she works hard and selflessly to rise above their bleak future. But all the other well-drawn characters were great too. A slice of Victorian life with a real ring of authenticity. I was caught up in this story. Loved it. Can't wait for the next book.- Maggi Andersen

"Poignant, powerful and searingly emotional, AnneMarie Brear stands shoulder to shoulder with the finest works by some of the genre’s greatest writers such as Catherine Cookson, Audrey Howard and Rosamunde Pilcher." Amazon reviewer.

Author of over thirty-five novels, AnneMarie Brear has crafted sweeping historical fiction with atmosphere, emotion, and drama aplenty that will surely satisfy any fan of the genre. AnneMarie was born in a small town in N.S.W. Australia, to English parents from Yorkshire, and is the youngest of five children. From an early age she loved reading, working her way through the Enid Blyton stories, before moving onto Catherine Cookson’s novels as a teenager.

Living in England during the 1980s and more recently, AnneMarie developed a love of history from visiting grand old English houses and this grew into a fascination with what may have happened behind their walls over their long existence. Her enjoyment of visiting old country estates and castles when travelling and, her interest in genealogy and researching her family tree, has been put to good use, providing backgrounds and names for her historical novels which are mainly set in Yorkshire or Australia between Victorian times and WWII.

A long and winding road to publication led to her first novel being published in 2006.

She has now published over thirty-five historical family saga novels, becoming an Amazon best seller and with her novel, The Slum Angel, winning a gold medal at the USA Reader's Favourite International Awards. Two of her books have been nominated for the Romance Writer’s Australia Ruby Award and the USA In’dtale Magazine Rone award and recently she has been nominated twice as a finalist for the UK RNA RONA Awards.

I love novels about women who take on responsibilities beyond those expected of them. And so it was with Kitty, whose parents not only squandered the family fortune and died, and left behind a family of children. Untrained and unprepared, Kitty assumed support and care of her young siblings.

Brilliant stories loved them 3 books. Disappointed that 2nd book ended late 1860's book 3 started 1914 should of been a book in-between therefore book 3 was mainly about the grandchildren of the 3 main characters in books 1 and 2 so much had happened which was referred to during book 3. Such a shame

    5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read

If you enjoy reading Downton Abbey-inspired historical novels, Kitty McKenzie is a must-read. After the untimely death of their parents, the McKenzie siblings lose everything after learning their family is deep in debt. Snatched from their comfortable life as members of the upper class, Kitty and her brothers and sisters must fend for themselves and find themselves living in the squalid conditions of the 19th century working class. A reverse rag-to-riches kind of tale. Can they work their way back in the upper class?

Kitty is a strong-willed, endearing character who must now act as a mother and a big sister to her younger siblings after realising that none of their relatives or so-called friends will come to help them. Without references or specific skills, she has difficulty finding employment. Luckily, she’ll find an unexpected source of help and support from Connie and Max Spencer, a childless couple living upstairs from their cellar. As the McKenzie brood navigate their new, tough daily life, Kitty finds some hope for a better future when she meets Benjamin Kinglsey, an attractive young man, heir to a major York fortune. Kitty will have to face the wrath of her future mother-in-law who strongly disapproves of this union. With the help of Benjamin’s father and grandmother, Kitty may stand a chance to pull her family from misery and experience a true love story. To what lengths will she have to go to reach that goal?

I couldn’t put down this book. It’s a riveting and moving tale about family, friendship and love. The author created complex and touching characters who struggle with profound life changes. Fortunately, it’s a tale about hope and new beginnings that will leave the reader with a new appreciation of life and relatives.

After finishing the book which ends on an open conclusion, I was overjoyed to learn that the author wrote a sequel. I cannot wait to read it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A story of courage and family love

A very good read about a young woman and her younger siblings who lost their parents unexpectedly, and as if this wasn't bad enough, Kitty then discovered that her parents were in debt, therefore leaving the family with almost nothing. Because of her love for her family she was determined to keep them together and although life for them was difficult at first, Kitty slowly managed to make a better life for them all. However she misses one of her brothers who chose to make a life of his own and although she hasn't heard from him she is planning to try to make an even better life for them in Australia. I am looking forward to reading the sequel and am wondering if she will ever be reunited with her brother and if she finds the young man she was in love with, who left for Australia some time before she did.
