Let There Be Light: A true story Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 763 ratings

On one of those magically white winter nights, my mother took me in her arms and shut the doors behind her. We left my drunken father in the name of a better life. And the name of that better life was Tom, a local gangster with the face of the devil himself.
I remember looking at my mother's bloody face bashed into the ground, teeth scattered around her limp body. I understood then that one of us was going to die. Fortunately, I was right!

Editorial Reviews

Review

The book is very well written and captures the attention of the reader. I particularly liked the fact that I was able to empathise with her and how she felt even though I didn't go through her same experiences. Some bits made me remember my own childhood experiences the games she would entertain herself with. The poem at the end that her mother dedicated to her was enlightening and her mother's letter really validated her feelings. I finished the book in just one night, highly recommend it, a book that gives hope!

This story held me captivated from start to finish. I read it all in one go! I admire the author for her strength in achieving all she has done

It's the early 1990s in some unnamed town in post-USSR Lithuania. 5 year old Karolina and her mother have fled for their lives for Karolina's alcoholic father and before long are living with the most notorious gangster in town in his luxurious home. Or rather more accurately they are imprisoned on his sizable estate and have to put up with a list of draconian rules which breaking brings punishment as well as cope with his increasing mental instability. Despite the imposed isolation, near fatal domestic violence, and being surrounded on a daily basis by all sorts of unsavory men Karolina's mother remains steadfastly faithful to her new man even turning against Karolina as time goes on. Not happy about having a child in his home, yet knowing that Karolina must live there if he wants her mother to stay, her new stepfather invents reasons to punish the young girl. From tying her to a tree in the middle of winter for being hungry enough to attempt to sneak some food from a picnic table to humiliatingly beating her backside black and blue in front of her school for losing track of time, he does everything he can to break the young girl's spirit, but she refuses to give in. What made me question the authenticity of the book was the author's intimate portrayal of Lithuanian gang life and I found it hard to believe that she, being a mere child at the time who admits adults spoke Russian to prevent her understanding their conversations, could possibly know all of the specific details given. Though the author claims she omitted specific locations and names to avoid offending others, I have an inkling that the real reason is she does not want anyone cross referencing her story against tangible facts. If I was an unknown accessory to someone's death I would take what I knew to the grave with me and never tell a soul, especially I would not blather about it in a tell all book that anyone in the world can read. That is when I truly got the sense that perhaps the author had embellished to some degree and this criminal mastermind 'Tom Krudlov' might be largely fabricated to make for a more impressive read rather than just the story of her difficult childhood under his tyranny.

Mothers are supposed to protect their children from harm. Not only did this mother not protect her daughter, she put her in harms way. The aunt betrayed her when she asked for help and the teacher did not want to listen. No child should ever be raised in these conditions. I am glad that in the end Karolina could rise above and forgive her mother, I am not sure I would have been able to do so.

I love stories that I can get into. Whether or not I can relate is beside the point. I am interested in others lives, how they live, what work they do to survive. The culture of a place, the traditions, the things that shape them and make them live and think a certain way is of great interest to me.

I inhaled this book! Yes, it's not that long, but I couldn't put it down. Every chapter is ended in such a smart way, I felt like a junkie. The ending was NOT what I expected! Recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking true story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 8, 2017
This was a truly heartbreaking and gripping story, that had my heart racing with fear and the detail and descriptions were so vivid throughout. I cried, I smiled, I willed her to go on and really felt for Karolina throughout her story. It must be a dreadful thing to feel like a stranger in your own home and to be deprived of love and your childhood. It’s a reminder to all parents out there that childhood is so fleeting – we must give our children all the attention and time they deserve. On Karolina’s birthday she wishes her mother would just love her as she blows out the candles on her cake.

Some great descriptions that show the author is a great writer and made me go cold: 'If you ever wondered what the sound of a breaking jaw sounded like take a breadstick and snap it' and her puppy hanging on a rope from a tree ‘like a dreamcatcher’ and her radio dropped into the bonfire.

The message you will take from this book is, to quote Karolina 'Whoever said that time heals has no idea' and 'If you cannot change the situation you must extract yourself.'

I also really enjoyed learning about the history of Lithuania following the fall of communism.

One small point – this book would benefit from a further edit regarding some of the grammar. Eg ‘Me and my mother’ should be ‘my mother and I.’ This in no way detracts from the story and English is Karolina’s second language after all but would improve it.

Thank you for sharing your heartrending story with me and sending a very big hug to you. You are a strong woman and deserve to do well in life. I wish you all the best.
