Laid In Earth (Josef Slonský Investigations Book 6) Kindle Edition
Why dig a new grave when one already exists…?
With his diet slipping and his penchant for Czech beer and pastries ever-growing, Captain Josef Slonský is back to his old ways. Except now he has four officers in his team to manage.
The extra manpower is welcome when a complex case lands in his lap. A dead woman is found buried in a flower bed. But she wasn’t the only body dumped in the grave…
Decomposed bone fragments point to a corpse that has been there a lot longer. And the burial site isn’t any ordinary flower bed. It’s in the grounds of the Red House – a building used by state security in the years before the fall of the Communism regime.
Are the two bodies connected? Was the girl dumped there on purpose?
And could more bodies be hidden underneath the dank earth?
LAID IN EARTH is the sixth international crime thriller in the detective series featuring Josef Slonský: an atmospheric police procedural full of dark humour.

About the author

Graham Brack has been writing for as long as he can remember, but now concentrates on crime fiction. Three times shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association's Debut Dagger prize (in 2011, 2014 and 2016) he never quite managed to win it.
Graham lives with his wife Gillian in Northamptonshire and has two children and three granddaughters, who are too young to be allowed to read Grandad's books, so he provides other stories for them.
He trained and practised as a pharmacist and has also written about football, rugby, cricket and medical law. He is an ordained priest in the Church of England.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2022I absolutely enjoyed every book in this series. The story lines, the way you bring historical events, facts and situations forward to show their impact on current affairs. I love all your characters and how they interact with each other. Since our main character is not due for retirement for at least a couple more years, I am looking forward to more stories and intriguing situations ahead. Well done Mr. Brack!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2019Many thanks to the author / Sapere Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction/mystery. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
A landscaper sees Captain Slonsky at his favorite bar and informs him that there is something wrong with the flower garden he's been preparing for plants.
When Slonksy takes a look himself, he finds a dead woman buried there... and she's not the only body dumped in the grave. Decomposed body bits point to a corpse has been there for many years.
The burial site is on the grounds on what was once called the Red House. The Red House looks like a guest house but it was once the interrogation center for the state's security force. Otherwise, known as a torture house when Communism was in charge, circa 1989.
When the newest body is identified, Slonsky learns that her father was once a General in the Red House. Coincidence?
Are the two bodies connected, even though they were killed more than 20 years apart?
This is the 6th outing for now Captain Slonsky and is easily read as a stand alone. Slonsky is an unforgettable character .... he's overweight, loves his beer and sausages and spends more time in bars than anywhere else. His mind is quite brilliant and he's a dogged searcher of justice. But beware his black humor .... he will make you smile, and then pierce you with a jab. Love him or hate him ... he's someone not easily forgotten.
Now that he's made Captain, he now has four team members. Two of them are fixtures from the previous books ... two of them are new and still learning the ropes. They all bring something with them to help solve cases, and Slonsky has no problem letting them run with their gut feelings. If they run into problems ... they know where to find him ... with beer and sausage in hand.
This is a nicely paced murder mystery with a few twists and turns along the way and a surprising ending. Keeping fingers crossed I have not seen the end of Captain Slonsky .. he would be sorely missed.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2022A police procedural series with a difference, the Slonsky books take place in modern Prague and the police have all the problems of regular crime plus the burdens of a very recently dismantled police state. Delightful characters , clever situations and excellent writing make this a delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Czech these books out (sorry!)
I loved Mr Brack's Master Mercurius (Mercurious?) novels and have the latest one on pre-order. I started the Josef Slonsky series and I've just finished number six. I read them one after the other in just over a week. Slightly addicted. Josef is a wonderful character. Full of the usual human flaws and foibles, but warm-hearted and funny. He has a whole host of side-kicks, the encylopaedic Sergeant Mucha, his trusty Lieutenants Navratil and Peiperova, his boyhood friend and drinking companion Valentin, his ex-Boss and the new Boss, the much-put-upon Dr Novak. and joined now by New Recruits Krob and Jenekova. The plots are suffiently twisty and in some cases a little dark. Mr Brack's humour shines through all of them. The constant banter between the characters is an absolute delight. Please Sir, Can we have some more? Five stars aren't enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sherlock that doesn't annoy
Now Captain Josef Slonsky is the rarest of all Mystery tropes, a unannoying Sherlock. Sure, his superiors consider him annoying and have since he was a mere Inspector, suddenly charged with a protégé under penalty of being forcibly retired. With each book, the NUMBER of protégés seemed to increase, until he had his own unit, which included a romance budding into full marriage. All the while, the wily Slonsky worked hard to appear not be working hard. I have LOVED this series since discovering it early in the Pandemic. It's a police procedural set in an interesting location (to me), with different attitudes and histories than say, an American-based novel placed in a city not normally along the literary beaten path. It's a step up from a cozy and a step down from too familiar. Graham Brack has spun magic with this series and every book has been worth a five-star review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Loveable lead character reminiscent of Frost in the RD Wingfield novels. Great stories with a delightful cast of characters. Humourous with interesting historical themes and Czech culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slonsky’ unearths a murder with deep roots
Slonsk’y and his family of police companions unearth the horrors of the Czech occupation in the 70’s to solve both fresh and historic murders. The development of Graham Brack’s characters that occupy Captain Slonsky’s police station have all attained complexities that make for wonderful banter and gut pulling feelings from the readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still fresh and fun to read.
I've now read all of the Slonsky novels, and can't tire of the format. Apart from admirable and warm characters which have developed over time, the situations they find themselves in are invariably amusing. It's hard to find another author as adept at uniting the two.
