About the author

Chris R. Underwood writes character-driven sword and sorcery inspired by the classic epic fantasy novels he grew up with. His obsession with fantasy began more than two decades ago with a dog-eared copy of The Hobbit. Many suspect that Chris actually is a hobbit, given that he is a short, curly-haired, hairy-footed homebody.
Chris lives in Auckland, New Zealand with his partner and daughter.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2020I enjoyed this book more than any other fantasy book I've read in the last year or more.
I found the characters interesting, authentic, flawed, noble and possessed each of their own mind. I liked them and really wanted to see what was going to happen. No cookie-cutters here, each one was so different from the other that it felt like I was surrounded by real people.
I found myself thinking of my favorite books (eg. the Belgariad, Shannara, Guardians of the Flame, Deryni) and the great characters there that I enjoyed so much.
The world is nicely built out. It had a real sense of place. Like it existed before Chris started to write it. That makes such a difference in the experience. In some ways, I felt like the setting was almost another character. It's well thought out and consistent and gives depth to the story telling and texture to the reading experience.
The storytelling is awesome. I enjoyed how often surprising twists came up. They really kept tension in the story and me on the edge of my proverbial seat.
This is a series I could see myself binge reading... if only the rest of the stories were out...
Oh, and I have to say that I LOVE the cover. In some magical way it reminded me all the best fantasy novels I've read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2024Excellent suspence, lots of wondering to keep you guessing and great characters with the story line. Worth reading for sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020I enjoyed reading this book immensely. The author has written a good story, but more he has built an entire world. It is well developed with history, culture, and mythology. The characters are well developed, with motives that are rational, and motivations that evolve in a natural way throughout the story. The villains are simply evil, they have their own purpose and reason behind their actions, the magic system is shrouded in mystery, but consistent and interesting throughout.
I also enjoy the perspective, it is written from the point of view of one character, without chapters dedicated to explain what is going on in the background and prepping you for what is going to happen next. This story is well told without unneeded exposition detracting from the story.
The only thing I detract a star for is that there is the ‘chosen one’ vibe that’s floating in the background of our MC. He catches the plague, but doesn’t go mad, he goes on a dungeon dive immediately after, even though that is a never before seen occurrence, he finds the answer to everything, but then everyone but him (and a few others, but mostly him) dies, he comes into contact with an ancient who somehow has the answer to his unknown question, and brings it all together at the end. Lots of plot armor holding everything together. Build some more detailed background, and let the story flow better, don’t force every step of the journey to lead into another epic struggle that only our hero can solve, let other players bring the puzzle together. (In lord of the rings we have our favorite hobbit bearing the ring to its destruction, but all along the way he is helped by others, be they ents, Rohan, elves, Gondor, golem or others, heck key parts of the story don’t involve Frodo at all, he isn’t at the heart of every piece of the plot)
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2023It’s been a while since I read anything that really peaked my interest. And that’s pretty sad when it’s coming from a writer. But this one really grabbed me by the ears and took me on a wild ride. The author has a great sense of pacing and well fleshed out characters, and both the world he’s created and magic system are excellent. Just a great adventure tale with lots of wonderful, mysterious locations. The author also created. lot of original ideas without all of the boring and tired old tropes which plague most fantasy novels. The story never once slowed down or lost my interest, and for that I’m giving this one five stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2022Absolutely grabbed me by the hair and shoved my attention into the early chapters, and didn't let up with every page and chapter. I'd gone through many previews of novels, some with better covers, and saddened at the poor writing quality. This one is thoroughly awesome. Instantly at the top of my favorites list for deep worldbuilding, compelling characters, and a writing style thats catchy, real, and visceral. I can't recommend this enough, and I can't wait to continue exploring the incredible world of magic, gods, and the shattered ruins of an amazing world. Kole is incredible to follow. I can't wait for more.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2021When I first started the book the MC Kole immediately grabbed my attention. The Author does a fantasic job of both making him likeable but also flawed. The other characters are likewise well written and even though some of them lack the same "screen time" if you will as the MC I still find myself thinking of Catguts. To be completely honest and fair there where parts in the begining of the book that werent as captavating as the end but looking back I can say with certainty I loved reading this book and highly recommend anyone who enjoys a truly good story and very real characters give this book a read. In closing the authors Prose was quiet good compared to other books I've read on Kindle Unlimited and I both look forward to his even better prose as he continues to write and nail down his style as well as the next book in the series and the continuation of Kole's adventure.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2021Enjoyable read, good character and world building, some parallels to Jordans wheel of time series but has a different spin. It will be interesting to see where he takes it.

This book is amazing! I enjoyed it from start to finish. An absolute page turner! Loved the characters and feeling their progress as they developed through adversity. I could not put it down, and can’t wait for the next in the series! Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable fantasy ride!

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite a remarkable book.
Whilst trawling the usual suspects at Amazon, came across this title. The blurb looked interesting so at around 7pm i bought and downloaded it, at 5am i put it down. Honestly it is a great journey, it's well written and all of the characters, both heroic and less so, had believable reasons for who they are and what they do. This is something which is becoming less common i have noted in other works. But beyond that, the world Mr Underwood had created is fascinating and filled with mysteries that i am truly dying to see revealed. Do yourself a favour and give this book a chance as it really is the start of something i think will be memorable. Plus you will find yourself re-reading it a few more times to see if you have missed anything. :)
