“Larry Flynn” by Max Power is an intriguing work of suspense and mystery that builds to a thriller with rapid-paced action. The story plays out in present-day Dublin but has its roots in a sinister secret born of greed and political corruption during World War II. Some will kill to keep this secret under wraps, but Larry Flynn, a bitter, dying old man, has other ideas. His desperate need to expose the truth keeps him hanging on to that last, slim thread of life.

To stay alive long enough to realize his revenge, Larry finds himself drawn into an agreement with a violent Dublin gangster, scheming against an innocent young woman. The situation soon spirals out of his control, and he begins to question not only his decisions in this place and time, but the road he has traveled his entire life.

As a rule, thrillers are not at the top of my reading list, but this story is so much more. Authentic Dublin dialect, along with some interesting Irish history, gives you a glimpse into the region’s personalities. The decades old mystery manages to draw you down a winding path to the past without yanking you from the present. For me, though, the real spark here is the author’s talent for pulling you into a character’s head. All of the mannerisms, resolves, doubts, and emotions make up a cast of characters that will stay with you for quite some time.

Several characters in this story are strong enough to hold a small lead, but my favorite is the flawed, embittered, and oh-so-human Larry Flynn. He reminds us that revenge is as great a motivator as a deep love, and the two are often intertwined.

If you enjoy compelling characters, a bit of graphic action, and suspense coupled with a mystery, I highly recommend “Larry Flynn” by Max Power!

This is the second book I've read of Max Power's; Little Big Boy being the first. I have to admire the versatility of the author in taking on the characters at two opposite ends of the spectrum; a seven year old boy in Little Big Boy and a decrepit, dying, old man in Larry Flynn. I found the character of Larry Flynn to be wonderfully developed by Power and it was probably this that saved the book, in my opinion, from being just another killer/thriller.
Although I did feel some of the action was over-contrived and required some suspension of belief, especially the durability of Tom, despite having the snot beaten out of him and being kneecapped, I still enjoyed the story quite a lot. I found the interactions between Laura and Larry to be the highlight of the book. As the blurb states, you'll never forget Larry Flynn - you are right, he was an unforgettable character in many ways. .
A very good read and an excellent way to while away a few hours.

Larry Flynn is an intriguing and emotionally charged character driven novel.  It’s a story about political corruption, greed, sinister plots and the destruction of innocent lives.

Larry Flynn is a cantankerous old geezer; an irritable, angry man, who has spent most of his life resentful, alone and plotting revenge.

Larry can’t believe his luck. Even though he is dying of cancer, Larry feels a new energy spring up within him. The object of his hate has practically landed on his doorstep, John Steele, the American Ambassador, has come to Dublin.  Although avenging his brother’s death is within Larry's grasp, he is no match for the Ambassador. Larry can’t even tell a story without his lungs screaming and sending him into an embarrassing coughing fit. But Larry devises a plan, a conniving, sneaky plan. He finds, however, that after using an innocent girl for his selfish undertaking, revenge doesn't feel that sweet at all.

Max Power does an incredible job developing characters. His ability to bring to life Larry Flynn, a man dying of lung cancer, was extraordinary and spot on.

If you love superbly-written, character-driven thrillers, then Larry Flynn, is the book for you. Highly recommended.

A powerfully written and very uniquely told revenge story. We’re inside the head of a man who is bitter and twisted up with anger, determined to find revenge against an injustice done to him that has brought him a lifetime of suffering. The character is well-enough written that it’s impossible not to feel a welter of emotions for him from hatred, to empathy, to sadness, to frustration, and much more. I wanted to scream at him at times. Though billed as an action-thriller, to me this was more of a compelling character study with political and social ramifications. But, I suppose, the reader will decide for themselves what their favorite dimension of the story is.

For me, another big standout of the story was the unfolding relationship between Larry and his intended victim, Lara. That one took me by surprise.

This is an intriguing thriller. I won't spoil it, but suffice it to say that I didn't see it coming.

It gets off to a slow start, and I was initially unsure about the book, but the pace picks up and it is worth the read. It is about Larry Flynn, a bitter old man and his quest for vengeance. The character is so well drawn that you find yourself wanting to give him a shake; you can almost see him sitting there. Kudos to Max Power for such a realistic portrayal.

The writing really is what keeps you going and draws you along so that the slow start becomes unimportant. Definitely a memorable, recommended read.

Hmm'. Bought this book based on all the excellent reviews. I'm only a third of the way through but have put it down, for now. The story is going somewhere but very slowly. I'm an Irishman and appreciate the venacular but to be quite honest it can be a bit "twee" and also a bit of a distraction.

Larry Flynn is a bitter old man who has a need to expose the truth before he dies. The story is set in Dublin but has its roots in a secret dating back to the World War II era. This isn’t a fast, shoot-em-up thriller. Save this one for when you have time to settle down with a good story.

5.0 out of 5 stars An obsessional need for revenge quickly escalating out of control - an intriguing thriller.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 7, 2015
Larry Flynn isn’t your usual doddering old fella but one harbouring a hidden past filled with tragedy, drama, and secrets of epic proportions. He certainly isn’t a nice old man; in fact he comes across as a thoroughly dislikeable and heartless bitter old man without a single redeeming virtue to his name – whether this is due to circumstances, the fact that he’s slowly dying and knows it or simply his nature is for the reader to discover and decide for themselves, but what they will also discover along the way is a cleverly constructed story that starts off in a sedate but intriguing way, hinting at a horrific progression.

Quite early on the author makes it clear that Larry Flynn has a hidden and sinister agenda, and one in which a pretty young girl plays a major part, giving rise to all sorts of gory speculation, but as anyone who has read any of Max Power’s books before will know, it’s never wise to jump to any obvious conclusions. Set in Dublin, much of the narrative and dialogue pays homage to the locality, utilising some of the local dialect to give a real feel for the characters and place, but keeping the balance just right so as not to distract or confuse any readers not familiar with the Irish accent or terminology. The dialogue is authentic, switching effortlessly between the characters to give each their own distinctive voice, bringing each of them to life with every word, thought and action. There are some lengthy narratives at times, but expertly interwoven into the dialogue and action sequences, providing the framework for the unfolding story.

In its simplest terms, this is a story of one old man’s obsessional need for revenge, and he’s prepared to go to any lengths to get it. When a young girl provides the opportunity for Larry to put his plans into action, things quickly escalate beyond his control, que the arrival of host of other characters he hadn’t allowed for: a ruthless Dublin crime boss, some nasty associates of the crime boss even more objectionable than Larry Flynn himself, a couple of equally ruthless US security special forces, and the US ambassador. What emerges is a story spanning the past seventy years; a conspiracy involving the Catholic Church, a soldier who knows too much, a shady high ranking Nazi, the smuggling of a Nazi fortune, and the Fuhrer himself - these may sound like the typical ingredients of a thriller but without giving too much away, those elements really are just the surface of this intriguing story of political ambition, murder, rape, kidnap, and a determination to safeguard a terrible secret. Another fine piece of writing from Max Power.

Congratulations to Mr Power for an extremely entertaining study of hate and revenge.
His portrayal of Larry Flynn is riveting, especially the early part of the book when it is very much a one man show of pathos and introspection.
The plot of a dying old man seeking revenge for a past injustice develops as a redemption story for the curmudgeonly Flynn and had me guessing right to the end about the outcome.
    Highly recommended.

Wow! I won't be forgetting Larry Flynn for quite some time! I highly recommend to fans of gritty thrillers.
I've read a few of this author's book knowing I'm in for an interesting if sometimes unusual read but this one is my firm favourite by miles. The portrayal of Larry Flynn both as an individual and the universal lessons he learns while facing his own demise was outstanding. One of the best characterisations I've read in a long time.
Add on to this a dark secret from his past and actions that lead to a violent collision between governmental fiqures, security forces and a dangerous crime gang and you have one explosive read.
The story is dark with language appropriate to the characters and maybe not for the faint hearted but I found this an incredibly powerful and memorable read.
At the end of each year I create a list of my favourite reads and this will be on it without a doubt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Is revenge a dish best served cold?

Larry Flynn is an initially slow moving thriller until events eventually come to a dramatic head. Larry is a difficult character to like. He has wasted his life by being stuck in the past. Consumed by the tragic loss of his brother and the woman he loved; he has become a bitter old man hell bend on revenge before it is too late. The juggernaut of events he unwittingly kicks off had me totally engrossed. I do understand the writer and reader wanting to tie up loose ends, but I was a little disappointed with the epilogue as I didn’t quite feel the choices Laura made, I think it would have been better without and took a bit away from all the action and mayhem of the last part of the book. All in all a good read that had me turning the pages to find out what was eating Larry.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 2, 2017
This author is a firm favourite of mine, as I have read and enjoyed some of his other stories...different but very well told.

Larry Flynn is an old, sick man whose wish is to see justice for a past that shaped his miserable life. It has twists and turns and surprises.

It is well-written and I did like the tone and style, however, it could do with a thorough proofread because of the typos, spelling and grammatical issues. That being said, it was still an excellent story - great characters that suited the plot (if not likeable), some beautiful descriptions and sense of place. It was also filled with intrigue, mystery and suspense, so much so that I became impatient to know the outcome - cleverly drawn out. I do think that Laura's 'ending' could have been stronger /different.

    Overall, great storytelling.

    Highly recommended.
