Robert Bryndza is an international bestselling author, best known for his page-turning crime and thriller novels, which have sold over five million copies.

His crime debut, The Girl in the Ice was released in February 2016, introducing Detective Chief Inspector Erika Foster. Within five months it sold one million copies, reaching number one in the Amazon UK, USA and Australian charts. To date, The Girl in the Ice has sold over 1.5 million copies in the English language and has been sold into translation in 29 countries. It was nominated for the Goodreads Choice Award for Mystery & Thriller (2016), the Grand prix des lectrices de Elle in France (2018), and it won two reader voted awards, The Thrillzone Awards best debut thriller in The Netherlands (2018) and The Dead Good Papercut Award for best page turner at the Harrogate Crime Festival (2016).

Robert has released a further five novels in the Erika Foster series, The Night Stalker, Dark Water, Last Breath, Cold Blood and Deadly Secrets, all of which have been global bestsellers, and in 2017 Last Breath was a Goodreads Choice Award nominee for Mystery and Thriller. Fatal Witness, the seventh Erika Foster novel, has just been published.

Most recently, Robert created a new crime thriller series based around the central character Kate Marshall, a police officer turned private detective. The first book, Nine Elms, was an Amazon USA #1 bestseller and an Amazon UK top five bestseller, and the series has been sold into translation in 18 countries. The second book in the series is the global bestselling, Shadow Sands and the third book, Darkness Falls.

Robert was born in Lowestoft, on the east coast of England. He studied at Aberystwyth University, and the Guildford School of Acting, and was an actor for several years, but didn’t find success until he took a play he’d written to the Edinburgh Festival. This led to the decision to change career and start writing. He self-published a bestselling series of romantic comedy novels, before switching to writing crime. Robert lives with his husband in Slovakia, and is lucky enough to write full-time.

White bleached pages
4 out of 5 stars
White bleached pages
As seen in the picture, the top three books are the ones I’ve gotten from local book stores and bottom three are from Amazon. While I do appreciate and understand that white pages are more expensive to make and better, I would have appreciated some description in the product that would indicate this important matter. Aside from this making my series look wacky, white bleached paper also hurts my eyes. The papers are also thinner than the top three books that I have. This may not be Amazon’s fault and it definitely is not the author’s fault but I thought it would be important for buyers to be aware of.

    1. Characters ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Erika Foster is a Detective Chief Inspector.
James Peterson is a Detective on Erika's team.
Kate Moss is a Detective Inspector on Erika's team.
Melanie Hudson is a Detective Chief Inspector.
    Andy Sparks is the Superintendent.
John McGorry is a Detective Constable on Erika's team.
    Lacey Greene is victim #1.
Isaac Strong is a Forensic Pathologist.
Darryl Bradley works for his father, John.
    Janelle Robinson is victim #2.
    Ella Wilkinson is victim #3.

    2. Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The story begins with a man who has a woman's body in the trunk of his car. She's been dead for 2 hours. He dumps her body in a trash bin.

James is at Erika's house when he gets a call - a couple of students found the mutilated body of a young woman in a trash bin. They both go to the crime scene. While they are there, Superintendent Sparks asks Erika to leave. As she leaves, she sees the students in a patrol car. She walks to the car and talks to them.

Erika sees the Forensic Pathologist, Doug Kernon. He identifies the young woman as Lacey Greene. He says Lacey had been tortured and found in a dumpster in January. Erika visits another Forensic Pathologist, Isaac Strong. She hopes to find similar murders. He did the autopsy on a young woman, Janelle Robinson, who was found lying on her side in a dumpster in August. She was tortured like Lacey.

Lacey had met a man named Nico Brownley on Match.com. Janelle lived at the YMCA and had a coffee bike.

Darryl Bradley works for his father, John, on their farm. He has numerous accounts on Match.com and Facebook. Does he know Lacey and Janelle?

Erika believes the 2 women were abducted, tortured and died of extreme blood loss.

Darryl talks to Ella Wilkinson as "Harry Gordon". They are going to meet at a local Indie Bar. Harry gets out of his car and approaches Ella. He asks her for directions (as a stranger) and before she knows it, he knocks her out. He quickly puts Ella in the trunk of his car. He's going back to the farm - he's going to the Oast House. He puts her in a cage, gave her water and was drugged. Her housemate, Maggie wakes up and finds that Ella isn't home.
Will Erika find the killer before he strikes again? Will she seek justice for Lacey and Janelle? You'll have to read for yourself and find out!!

    3. Writing Structure ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Robert has created a story that is easy to read and with great suspense! The story takes hold of you with the first page. It's a story about social media and the risks people take to meet someone. It's very timely and is a heart-pounding read! The characters continue to evolve; Erika is a strong woman, an excellent detective; but she's vulnerable, afraid to get too close to James. I think she's afraid of losing him.

    4. Ending ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
OMG!!!! The ending is a roller coaster of thrills and suspense! Another young woman is abducted! Will Erika and her team finally put the pieces together and find her in time?

    5. Overall ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is Book 4 in the DCI Erika Foster series! As a fan of this series, it's like getting together with old friends! Erika, James, Kate and Melanie have evolved into great characters. Robert continues to do great work! I look forward to Book 5!

Last Breath (Detective Erika Foster #4) by Robert Bryndza
    4.5 stars!!!!

“Her last evening. Her last breath.”

Oh, how I have missed DCI Erika Foster. Robert Bryndza delivers once again, a fast, action packed, gripping, suspense filled thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout and at the epi centre as ever is our tough as nails DCI, Erika Foster.

In Last Breath, Erika is struggling in her new role and the boredom is well and truly setting in, Erika is definitely not destined to do a desk job. When Peterson gets a call while Erika is with him about a body being found in a dumpster, once again, Erika’s nose begins to twitch and her inherent coppers instinct kicks in and it isn’t long before she has herself situated as the senior investigating officer.

The characters that we have come to know and love are ever present and Erika takes no time in re-assembling the team that she trusts. Robert Bryndza tackles the ever-present worry of social media in this book as the serial killer in Last Breath uses these tools to find and trap his victims. I certainly am dreading the time that my kids want a social media presence as you never know who is actually watching. This message was well done and expertly delivered without overpowering the story.

In Last Breath, the reader is given the identity of the killer very early on and Robert Bryndza gives the reader a front row seat into the investigation itself where Erika and her team are in the dark and are slowly unearthing clues piece by piece. This shifted the dynamic in this book and was actually well executed and as the suspense builds page by page the reader is swept along for the ride.

“They’d never know exactly what happened…in those seventeen minutes. It was as if she vanished into thin air.”

The pace of this book was perfect and I couldn’t put it down. Every word, every page had me captivated and on the edge of my seat. The building suspense and the constant worry that this would be “the one that got away” was ever present and as our clever and intuitive serial killer seemingly gets away with murder time and time again you are just waiting for mistakes to be made. Erika is like a pit bull though and with the bit firmly between her teeth and with her tenacity and perseverance the serial killer doesn’t stand a chance.

With office politics and the constant battles of senior management Erika has her work cut for her but I loved the fact that Erika’s character development in particular was really a focal point in this book. Erika’s emotions and her softer side are there for all to see and this was an extremely welcome addition as we finally get to see that Erika is made of skin and bone like the rest of us. Erika has always been a closed book, but with the few pages that she shared in this book I am hoping that this is the beginning of a few new chapters and Erika finally opens herself up to the possibility of more on a personal level.

“…you might have been handed your superior rank by brown nosing, but you have to earn authority.”

Once again Robert Bryndza delivered and I cannot wait for the next instalment. This is firmly becoming one of my favourite thriller series.

“So you nagged him to death?”

Riveting as usual. I think Erika Foster is one of the most likable characters I've encountered, though this might be my personal taste. I enjoy how Rob is developing her conflict over the course of the series especially with what's going on with Peterson.

The killer in this one was super realistic for me, as was the issue the author touched on with regards to social media and putting yourself out there. All the characters were well thought out, three dimensional.

    POTENTIAL SPOILER BELOW:

I thought the part with Bryony and Darryl in the car was just hilarious. When she kinda flipped out on him and he was actually scared - it all went down the drain for Bryony afterward but yeah, that was a highlight for me. Peterson is also just so sweet and caring, and willing to put up with Erika's baggage (understandable baggage, but still baggage) which is just awesome. This book made me feel all kinds of ways. I love that we get an inside view of the villain, so to speak. The reader actually connects with him on a deeper level (don't judge me) which makes him all the more nefarious.

I love that people from all cultures and walks of life are included in the stories. I've never been to London but I feel transported in both good and bad ways whenever I read the books in this series.

Hoping to read more about Erika in the future, especially after the promotion. Also, what the heck is going on with Marsh? I was kinda bummed that his marriage is falling apart. Marcie seemed a little vapid but I felt he really loved her - I guess it's a testament to how hard officers/detectives have to work and just how much it affects their home lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Edgy, pacy and a little bit dark. The best one yet
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 19, 2017
You know when you pick up a book and you become immediately absorbed by it? When the writing is so good, the characters so engaging and the mystery just begging to be solved, so much so that you don’t want to turn away? When it ticks all of the boxes of the very things you look for in your favourite reads. You know the things I mean… Fast action page turner – check. Edge of the seat tension – check. More chemistry between Erika and Peterson than in a GlaxoSmithKline laboratory – check. From the very first page this book has it all.

This is a book with rather dark overtones – a young girl tortured and murdered and then her body dumped as though she was simply another piece of trash. The killer appears merciless and yet very meticulous in the execution of their plans, leaving no clues for the police. And to make matters worse, when a second body is found, there don’t appear to be any links between the victims other than the cruelty they have been subjected to and a murderer who knows all of the tricks required to stay hidden.

Now as the avid reader will know from Dark Water, Erika no longer works for the Murder Investigation Team, taking the case right outside of her jurisdiction. She has to fight to get the powers that be to allow her onto the team, which means swallowing her pride and apologising to the very man who caused her to transfer out to begin with – Superintendent Sparks. But when a strange turn of fate hands her the opportunity to lead the investigation, she jumps at it and thus she comes full circle to find herself working back with Peterson and Moss in the heart of the city. And this, ladies and gents is where the magic happens.

This trio, foursome if you count John McGorry who Erika brings with her from Bromley, are the perfect investigative team. Very in tune with each other and with a brilliant blend of humour, determination and charisma which means that you can’t help but like them. I love the dynamic that Robert Bryndza has created between them, and even the minor tension and electricity which exists within the team due to the budding romance between Erika and Peterson adds something special to the story. You can feel how torn Erika is between her professional persona, her feelings for Peterson and her need to keep a certain distance from her emotions following what happened to her husband. Their relationship is all brought to a head by the end of the book, but to find out how and why you’re going to have to read for yourself. But I will say that it’s one of those nail biting moments you'd expect from this series.

Now the killer in Last Breath is merciless and I suppose somewhat of a true psychopath – maybe even sociopath as they appear to have no morals or redeeming qualities at all. Much like in The Night Stalker the reader is aware of who the killer is from very early on; we are treated to, or rather subjected to, their thoughts and feelings as the action moves from the team to their point of view quite regularly. Unlike the perpetrator in The Night Stalker, there appears to be no real justification as to why they are the way they are. They stalk young women on line, tapping into their likes and wants and feeding back to them what they want to hear to gain their trust. They expose everything that is wrong about the way people live their lives on social media. I can understand how external pressures may have contributed to their psyche in a way, but at the end of the day, their actions are brutal and there is no way to forgive. Yes there is a trauma that happens in their childhood, but even that doesn’t quite seem enough to explain the choices they make. To me, they are just plain evil.

The pacing of the book is perfect and I quickly found myself flying through the chapters, fully immersed in the story and thankful to be back amongst such familiar characters. In spite of the emotional journey Erika goes on in this book, she is still spiky, determined and willing to do whatever it takes to catch her man. We are treated to her softer side too, and it is very welcome indeed. It makes you like and respect her even more if that is even possible. And the way the book ends makes me wonder what next for Erika and the team as she is gifted the opportunity she has been working toward since the very start… The ramifications of that could be huge so I’m keen to see which path Mr Bryndza chooses to take.

For me I think this is probably my favourite of the books to date. While they have all been brilliant, there was just something about this one – I can’t quite articulate what – but something which really appealed to me. It is quite dark at times; the killer’s compulsion and lack of empathy for their victims makes for a skin crawling read. And as for the ending, as the final chapters unfurled, the fate of the final victim resting upon Erika and the team’s ability to make sense of the few scraps of clues they have been left, well it really got the adrenaline pumping and yes – this is where the nails got a particularly heavy going over. It was a ‘can’t take my eyes off the page’ kind of moment. You know the ones? Where you feel yourself balancing on the edge of the chair and leaning into the book so much so that you almost fall over. Where you are willing the heroes to find their target and holding your breath as they enter the lions den for that final, potentially deadly dalliance with the killer… That kind of an ending.

Robert Bryndza has done a fantastic job, writing a truly compelling and tension filled story which also manages to highlight the perils of social media. It is not intended to scare or drive people away from their apps, or to stop people from engaging with others online, but it may make you think twice before you accept that friend request from someone you don’t actually know. Because that’s the thing about the internet and those on line profiles so easily created. At the end of the day, it’s all just window dressing – and you may not really know what, or who, is hiding behind it.
