Last Ditch: The Battle in the English Channel, 1939-43 (WWII Action Thriller Series Book 3) Kindle Edition
A young sailor is called to serve his country in a hazardous rescue mission…
The English Channel, 1940
World War II is in full swing. With Hitler’s Panzers closing in on British forces trapped in northern France, Sub-Lieutenant Wally Bruce is called to his country’s aid.
Serving aboard the ‘little ships’ of the Royal Navy’s Coastal Forces division, he’s instructed to assist with the Dunkirk evacuation. On this tense mission he almost loses his life to bombing and friendly fire … and his heart to Suzanne Noyce, a beautiful and enigmatic French spy.
When France falls and Britain stands alone against Hitler, Wally goes on to serve aboard various vessels over the next two years.
And as tensions mount in the build-up to ‘Operation Jubilee’, the devastating 1942 raid on Dieppe, he’s in the thick of the action.
But with the odds stacked against the Allies, can they hold out against the enemy? And can Wally survive the war with his life and heart intact?
Based on real-life events, LAST DITCH is the third book in the WWII Action Thriller Series: authentic aviation and naval military fiction bringing to life the perilous battles that irrevocably changed the course of World War II.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2022John Wingate put together a magnificent work of British naval action in the English Channel. One of the best I have ever read about that important time. Great words from a fellow scribbler.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2021But...the last of the book especially seems all too obviously cribbed directly from the records of WWII British records which were in fact written by others even if it was over 77 years ago...adding in some fictional romance and a few extraneous characters in which no real plot in a book sense exists is a sort of place risk frowned on by actual writers who work hard at their craft to achieve realism but not at the expense of others prior works...even if historical narratives ..before them. It's just not cricket. I will avoid this..author...in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2021Lot of detail on the battles fought by the small ships in the English Channel in WW2. The only thing that rankled with me was the quote attributed to Lord Mountbatten referring to “the heavy casualties Britain suffered”. It is not clear if this was a direct quote by Mountbatten (an unsurpassed self-promoter) or a paraphrase by the author. In either case, the majority of the casualties were Canadian who suffered 68% losses and formed the majority of the assault forces. This has not been forgotten by the Canadians who died due to unbelievable incompetence in the planning and execution.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2021he lessons learned at Dieppe. It was a.critical battle to bring the war to an eventual end and it has never been so well explained to me before I wish the author had spent a few more pages
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2021There were too many boat and character names that it was hard to keep them straight. They were hard to follow from assignment to assignment. It was an incredible story based on history. It is a good book for history buffs.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2022Outstanding in its scope and the small details. Gritty and not afraid to show the screw ups as well as the heroics. Worth the time.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021I have enjoyed other books by Mr. Wingate, but not this one. The book read like a list of players and their awards with little action really described.

3.0 out of 5 stars Factual war book
There’s a lot of good accurate history in this book. However it is cluttered. We get the full names ranks and medals of the real characters.
That’s fine for a regimental history, but the novel doesn’t glow. The main fictional character is almost an afterthought.

2.0 out of 5 stars poor story line
Not sure if this a novel or a documentary, to many names and abbreviations.
Sorry the idea is good but the book does not hold together
