Leave It!: How to teach Amazing Impulse Control to your Brilliant Family Dog (Essential Skills for a Brilliant Family Dog Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 150 ratings

Does your dog steal anything that’s not nailed down?

Learn how you can

• leave food on the table

• forget shoes and toys on the floor

• know your rubbish is safe in the bin

- without having to mount an armed guard to protect it all from your family dog!

This book will take you step-by-step through some simple and surprising games which will turn your thieving rascal into a saintly pooch who can be trusted with cakes on the coffee table, dinner on the counter, biscuits in the children’s hands, and who will confine his chewing to the things you give him to chew.

Instead of saying “This is what you do,” then leaving you to it, professional positive dog trainer Beverley Courtney takes you by the hand and troubleshoots all the games so that you can get them absolutely right for you and your individual dog. And the joy is that this is all achieved without shouting, force, or intimidation. Just pure undiluted fun!

There’s no strange jargon, no “Thou shalt not’s”, and every time you get stuck, another science-backed solution pops up. Beverley’s years of experience - in face-to-face classes as well as her popular online programs - shine through. Having taught thousands of new owners how to work with their puppies and dogs - entirely without force - Beverley knows just what you’re up against!

Review

I now have all four of your books and am really enjoying them - I love your teaching methods. Marvin mastered the "magic hand" in one session yesterday to the point that when I sat down with a cuppa and chocolate biscuit this morning all I needed to do was cover the biscuit with my hand the the roving nose backed off and he lay down a few feet away. A first! Fiona and Marvin

Read them all today! Brilliantly written with a compassionate and understanding voice. Sheila MacDonald

Thank you for such a brilliant series of books. I bought Leave It! first & then bought the other three as soon as I'd finished it. I only wish I'd known about them when my dog was a pup. Liz and Fergus

Having read the first book, with excellent results for my dog, I was keen to progress to this book and I have not been disappointed. The training is clearly explained with great problem-solving tips. We have been using the "magic hand" trick for over a week now and already I can drop a piece of food on the floor without it been snatched up, my dog is half Labrador so this is amazing! Still more to work on with this particular training but I am looking forward to reading and working through the next book. Amazon review

The books are worth every penny. Leave it! has been very useful, and we can now leave a pile of horse-poo in exchange for a piece of chicken. Debbie Stott

The book is wonderful and very helpful. Lewis Robinson

Do I still have work to do with my doggos? Yes. But this book shows how. Because it is short and focused, it is feels doable; it doesn't overwhelm. And it is working! My younger dog, as soon as he realized that he wasn't going to get what he wanted (his treat) until he did what I wanted him to do (not eat it from my open hand), stamped his little feet, and made little bleats of frustration while he worked to control his impulse, but then wagged his tail for joy when he got to gobble it up after all. And this happened within minutes of the first lesson. I suspect it will be some time before I can tell him to "Leave it!" when he discovers some stinky thing that he can't resist while we're on a walk rather than in my kitchen, but it's up to me to do the work! And to try other books in the same series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five star reading

I'm completing a Dog Training Diploma and having as wide a perspective as possible is key to expanding my knowledge as I branch into the behaviour field.

The author speaks from a range of experiences and is clear, compassionate and concise. The explanation before each training session outline is invaluable- understanding WHY you're doing something rather than just being told 'do this' means you have a much better appreciation for the whole process. The writing style is fun, approachable and helps you connect so you value the author's opinion and trust what she asks you to do. Each session is followed by a problem solving q&a and gives you this info in a conversational style which, again, builds that trust with your 'human trainer'.

I have all of the books in this series and would not be without them. I am regularly flabbergasted when I see, hear and read comments made by new puppy owners who have very clearly not done a dotof research either about their breed or about NECESSARY training. These books will give you the right start and will impress upon you the NECESSARY need for training and consistent work upon that training.

    Five star reading.

The entire Brilliant series is excellent as a resource for troublesome dogs or just for training your dog. Simple. positive and easy to reinforce, I use these methods as a base for my dog behaviorist business - actually massively enhanced my in-depth training.

I have a dog with VERY low impulse control - these methods are working to help her adopt a calm way of asking for what she wants. It is work in progress for her but seeing results every day

Teach your dog the fun way. Just as with kids, you need to make learning fun. Beverley does just that in her books_no need for shouting and waving your arms about(indeed, Beverley explains how that approach is counter productive) =just fun exercises and games.

I love the whole series of these books, they actually give a realistic view of training a dog, they don't just assume that you say one thing and all dogs react the same, they give examples of how different dogs might react and what to do in each situation. It's clear this lady has had years of experience training a wide variety of dogs in varying situations.
