Letters For A Spy: Danger, romance and mystery in Regency England Kindle Edition
When Elizabeth Thorne inherits Crowle Manor, she gets far more than she bargained for…
1808, Sussex, England
At twenty-five Elizabeth Thorne is finally able to live independently, when she finds herself the heiress to her late uncle’s estate, Crowle Manor.
But while staying at an inn on the way to claim her inheritance, strange things start to occur...
She awakes to see someone hastening from her chamber. And she discovers a secret letter tucked into one of her books.
Her confusion increases when she realises her former lover, Robert Farnham, is also staying at the inn. She is sure he noticed her so why does he appear not to recognise her?
Is Robert avoiding her? Could he be the one who planted the letter…?
What secrets are really being hidden behind the doors of Crowle Manor…?
LETTERS FOR A SPY is a classic Regency Romance by Alice Chetwynd Ley: a traditional British, historical adventure story with a twist of suspense and mystery, set during the Napoleonic Wars.

‘These vintage Regency romances hover somewhere between Jane Austen and the genre as we know it today. I really enjoy them.’ - Sonya’s Stuff

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2021An altogether lovely short novel of adventure and romance. Nothing surprising, but also not a bit out of context. Well researched and quite enjoyable
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2022The action was great. I loved all of it. The romance was really abrupt. I think the story could have gone on a bit more to form the romance and smooth out the ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2016Alice Chetwynd Ley's books are for all lovers of true Regencies -- a plucky heroine, a strong hero and in this case, more adventure and less romance. When Elizabeth Thorne is left an inheritance, the intrepid young woman — for perhaps the first time — goes against her family's wishes. She does not sell her new property, but decides to move there and live independently with her former governess. Her journey, of course, does not go as planned. There is a letter gone astray, a mysterious woman and — most shockingly — the return into her life of the only man she ever loved. This is a well-plotted and quick read. To be a five-star book, I would have liked more romance from the main characters and more explanation of the dead uncle's role (perhaps none?) in the smuggling and other goings on at the property. Even so, this is a rollicking read with excitement, brushes with death and two lovers reunited after duty parted them. Particularly for fans of "clean" Regencies, this is a treat. Ley's books are old-fashioned in the best sense of the word.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2016I have enjoyed Ms. Ley's books, although I'm slogging through the Brighton one. I paused that to read "Letters for a Spy. It was a most entertaining book. I think it quite worthy of 4 Stars for well written escapist literature with a dash of romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2016I've enjoyed some of this author's books, but this one was not one of them. Although technically well written, the storyline simply didn't have much to offer me as it related to romance, adventure or excitement. There was very little romance until toward the end of the story - then words and feelings were finally expressed. For most of the book, I actually thought a different character would wind up being revealed as the love interest - so much for my judgment.
Final thought. The two protagonists had been romantically involved some years before, but she declined his offer of marriage because she had a younger sister to help raise. When their paths finally cross again, six years have passed. She recognizes him, but he initially doesn't recognize her and stranger still - neither seems to have spent years pining for one another. So much for that.
This book was, of course, as much spy novel as it was romance but for me, it failed on both fronts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it
Nice story, easy reading. Elizabeth comes across very weak & could do with a bit more character but overall nice clean romance with a bit of spy thrown in

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
The story was rather fun and not just about the romance but I would have liked a bit more personality, character development and romance!

3.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear...
I really like and enjoy this author’s novels, and the story in this one is just as good. My 3 star rating is because it all seems a bit unbalanced. There is too much unnecessary writing in the first half that would have been better employed in the second. Margaret’s repeated dismissal of Elizabeth’s concerns was annoying. Equally, the sudden revival of the relationship between Robert & Elizabeth as if six years had not passed, was frustrating to say the least. This is where all that wordage wasted at the start would have been better employed.
Still, a good story I enjoyed.
