Lifeboat Heroes: Outstanding RNLI Rescues from Three Centuries (Search and Rescue) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 162 ratings

An engrossing history of the RNLI and how for two hundred years it has been saving lives along the coasts of Britain and Ireland.

The seas surrounding these small islands can be treacherous.

Even the most experienced seamen can find themselves in difficulty as they are buffeted by gale force winds and tremendous waves, tragically resulting in the loss of thousands of lives.

Yet since 1824 the RNLI has done its best to aid those in danger. Launching their vessels into the roughest seas and fiercest storms they have rescued countless men and women from sinking ships and certain death.

Edward Wake-Walker examines sixteen dramatic rescues spanning the entire history of the RNLI, from the early era when Sir William Hillary, founder of the RNLI, and his men rowed out to save the crew and passengers from the
Fortroendet which had run aground, through to the modern era with helicopters and modern equipment providing assistance.

All of the sixteen accounts demonstrate the bravery of the lifeboat crews who risked their risked and sometimes tragically lost their lives in their desire to save those in peril.

Lifeboat Heroes: Outstanding RNLI Rescues from Three Centuries is a thrilling history of lifeboats and their crews. Edward Wake-Walker uncovers how the RNLI developed as a charity and how the lifeboats have evolved over the course of their long and valuable history.

Was an interesting book with all the rescues and times of extreme bravery. I also enjoyed learning the history of the lifeboat creation and the advancement in lifeboat design.

It turns out that I love this book. I was given it originally as something to read on a rainy day, but it quickly became a most interesting read. The book delves into the people and events of the RNLI, from its infancy, to modern times. There must be something for everybody in this book - Bravery, nature, tragedy, luck, technology, resolve, insanity, and disbelief. Couple these themes with the fine quality photos and the result is a comprehensive and enthralling book about the life, love, and losses of The RNLI.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent & gripping selection of RNLI rescues over nearly 200 years.

As a long-standing & strong admirer of the RNLI's amazing efforts to help strangers in trouble [mostly] around our coastlines, I bought this book as a bit of an 'instinctive punt' purchase. It DID NOT disappoint! From the 1st page to the last, you get to bare witness - in comfort & safety - to 16 hand-picked rescues by the RNLI through the nearly 200-years of it's wonderful existence. Not all end well, including the story of the Penlee lifeboat tragedy in December, 1981 - which I remember very well from the news when I was a child. A very fitting tribute/reminder to the immense bravery & selflessness shown by the RNLI crews every time they go to the aid of strangers at sea. Also, a big thank you to the coastguard SAR helicopter crews too. I fully recommend you buy this book.

Enjoyable read, but for real life stories of the RNLI I preferred Surviving the Storm, the first hand stories by the people who were there. For me, this book lacked the sense of urgency which that book conveyed so vividly.

This book just shows the heroism of the people around us that risk their own life to help save others.
Everyone should read this book especially those who spend time by water
