First things first: I received a copy of this book from the author and this collection of almost-fairy tales is NOT FOR CHILDREN.

Angelika Rust was the first indie author to prove to me that selfpub could be done extremely well, so I'm always happy to read her latest. This clever, charming, and compact collection does not disappoint. Although all the stories are based on Little Red Riding Hood, each one has its own voice and style as it plays with some twist on the theme of a girl in red headgear taking cake and wine to her grandmother and meeting a wolf. “Tradition” is a comic action-adventure in which the characters are forced by family tradition (or the story itself) to go through the same ridiculous acts over and over until one of them breaks out. “Rich Little Bitch” takes laughably awful characters for a humorous erotic spin. “A Cautionary Tale” is exactly as labeled. “Another Body” purports to be about a monster, but who is it, really? “Never Too Old” casts Red as the monster; or as a supernaturally powerful protector of the innocent. “Little Red Queen” has the flavor of ancient saga with roots in human savagery. “The Other Leg” inserts the mythic into a contemporary domestic almost-comedy. “There Were Roses” brings real magic into play as a deceased grandmother comes to the aid of the Duke's daughter. “Let Them Eat Cake” forges redemption out of malice.

These stories do not answer the inciting question of what would have happened if Red had simply shared her cake (or “basket of goodies,” as it was told to me) with the wolf. Each one raises its own questions and is satisfying on its own or in conversation with the others. The whole collection can be read in an hour or two, or each story read and savored on its own. Either way, this is a worthy addition to the library of any reader who enjoys a grown-up take on a childhood classic.

4.5 Stars! I really liked this modern new take on the Red Riding Hood folktale. Meant to read over a few days but found myself whiling away an afternoon, because each story is so different from the next. My very favourite tale in this collection is Let Them Eat Cake - loved the characters in this one so much that I truly hope Angelika Rust writes more about them. Recommended.

Although it isn't made apparently clear how this book might be connected to Rust's books related to the Alice in Wonderland character (if at all), I couldn't help but read this collection of short stories with a feeling that it somehow led to a deeper concept of alternate timelines and realities, all feeding into the rather supernatural aspect of her other series.
Whether or not that connection is intended in any way, this series does a wonderful job of showcasing how fairy tales morph over time and through different storytellers and that while these tales may all share similar concepts, it doesn't take much of a change in order to completely shift the meaning and feeling of the story altogether.
This is an exceptional bout of writing prowess and gets me excited to see what Angelika might have up her sleeve next.

A book of short stories inspired by Little Red Riding Hood, ranging from cheeky, bloody, impolite to considered and moral. You wouldn't think there were so many different ways to go with one story but there is, each one an utterly unique take on one basic plot until each is a story of its own.
There's remarkable talent here, a book that you'll think you'll take a few days to read before you realise you just spent your evening turning pages, disappointed that there's not more.

Angelica rust delights her readers with an interesting take on the mythology of Little Red Riding Hood. The various aspects of the fairy-tale span from gruesome to ridiculous, romantic to scary. Rust takes her readers on an enchanting journey through traditional wisdom and contemporary amusement. Highly recommended.

I loved this collection of short stories based on and inspired by Little Red Riding Hood. There's a great variety, some light and some dark, and they're all very well done. It's been really well researched too. Highly recommended!
