Live Wire: A Novel Kindle Edition
Black Magic Meets Big Tech.
What could go wrong?
Just about everything.
Kyle Toucher’s debut novel Live Wire rams you headlong into a fast-moving SciFi/Cosmic Horror/Action thriller, set not only in the desolate pre-internet world of 1993, but the endless night of the New Mexico desert.
One harrowing situation follows another as our cast of strangers find themselves thrown together under impossible circumstances, thanks to the reckless actions of occult tech giant Medusa Engineering. The basic drive to live through the night fuels the pulse-pounding action: a gruesome spree of mass murder, a spectacular AC-130 Spectre gunship airstrike, a swirl of deadly consciousness slamming into the electrical gird, followed by a legion raging electrical towers, uprooted and mobile, obliterating everything in their path.
Only at circuit's end is the true nexus of this deadly power revealed, as dawn on Route 60 pits human determination against brute force and inner dread. Will an ageless, shadowless terror dominate the world?

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Live Wire would make an amazing movie. This action-dominated and highly visual tale could induce a box-office stampede. Toucher crafts a narrative reminiscent of World War Z, inserting interview transcripts between chapters of third-person narration. It's a truly American novel where slang and vernacular hold their own alongside Standard American English."—Carmilla Voiez
★ ★ ★ ★ "Live Wire was a total surprise, at every turn. Elements of sci-fi horror, ancient evil and familial relationships."—Noelle Kelly
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Live Wire is a simmering cauldron of weird weather, dangerous science, and the occult. Remember how Stephen King ruined old cars and St. Bernard's for a lot of people? Kyle Toucher has made it so you'll never look at those power line stanchions that line the highways the same way again. Truly unique and terrifying."—Tom Deady, Of Men and Monsters
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "A thriller with a bit of a horror bent to it, this one covers all the bases. Recommended."—Murray Samuelson, Musings of the Monster Librarian
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "The story rips along, as you might expect a novel about a jolt of electricity to do, but it's the cast of characters, each dealing with their own demons, that holds the whole thing together."—Jay Bechtol
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "For a horror/thriller, this is a good one to start the summer with. It's also one of the nuttier ideas to come down the pike. Live Wire is an extremely engrossing book that will have readers zipping through pages, mainly due to the author's excellent writing and sense of pace. It's that classic "tight but loose" style of writing. This book, at heart, is unquestionably a thrill ride, but the humor and wit of the characters help give the story a big boost."—Murray Samuelson, Monster Librarian

About the authors
Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.
Welcome to Crystal Lake Publishing—Tales from the Darkest Depths.
Kyle Toucher (rhymes with voucher) is the author of the novel Live Wire, from Crystal Lake Entertainment, the novella Life Returns, and the Black Hare Press release, Southpaw.
He recently appeared in the anthologies Dead Letters: Episodes of Epistolary Horror and To Hell and Back, from Crystal Lake and Hellbound Books respectively.
Raised on a diet of Frankenstein and Godzilla, Black Sabbath and Black Flag, Lovecraft, Blatty, Barker and King, his path seemed inevitable. Through his twenties, he fronted the influential Nardcore crossover band Dr. Know, made records and hit the road. Later, he moved into the Visual Effects field, which led to eight Emmy nominations and two awards for Firefly and Battlestar: Galactica. Recent film credits include Top Gun: Maverick and Devotion.
He lives with a lovely woman, four cats, two dogs, and several guitars in a secure, undisclosed location.
This September, expect his first collection The Medusa Psalms: Welcome to Walpurgis County ―also from Crystal Lake Entertainment―to rise from the slab of a coroner's office near you. Ten stories. Two novellas. One benighted landscape.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2023This book has layers.
It's a straightforward survival tale in which characters are thrown together under the most unlikely of scenarios.
It's a surprisingly touching story about the disintegration of a family. Father and son on a road trip, accompanied by the ghost of the mother. The relationship is fully fleshed out, scars and all.
It's a parlor piece where the snappiest dialogue occurs during a series of post mortem interviews.
Most notable was how well developed the main characters are. Each has their own voice and as we come to learn, each has a uniquely painful past.
The pacing is breakneck. The descriptions are crystal clear. It's an easy read in the sense that Mr. T had a keen sense of what his world looked like and conveyed it with what seemed like ease: And when something looks easy, be assured it is not.
I am looking forward to more from Kyle Toucher.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2023LIVE WIRE is a very well-written and exciting debut novel from Kyle Toucher, an author I plan to keep an eye on. While reading this I was reminded of several classic science-fiction movies of the 1950s/1960s (THEM, ATTACK OF THE 50-FOOT WOMAN, etc) that dealt with monstrous threats arising out of the atomic age. In places, this also felt like a homage to the classic truck stop movie MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE, based on a Stephen King story.
Toucher manages to blend into his character-driven truck stop horror tale elements of science-fiction and Lovecraftian occultism. A quasi-governmental science-based organization (Medusa Engineering) opens a gateway to another realm of ancient beings who manifest themselves inside the massive electrical grid system of New Mexico and all hell breaks loose in highly imaginative and creative fashion. The pseudo-science is touched upon just enough for readers to suspend disbelief and let the juices flow until a highly-charged finale.
I liked the development of every single character (except one) in this novel and worried about every one of them, something that doesn't occur that frequently. The ending is somewhat prophetic and satisfying and the final chapters leave things open for a sequel, although the thought of that is a bit shocking. The final destination of one of the major characters is left undetermined but suspicious.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2024I was a big fan of Dr. Know back in the 80s. Their album Plug-In Jesus and the Burn ep were both on regular rotation at our skate spots in 1985. Back then Kyle’s lyrics were mini horror stories: Life Returns (which is now a story), God Told Me To, The Machine, Mr. Freeze…all horror stories set to some of the best Nardcore there was. It made sense that Kyle would continue with his verbal imageries years later. I’m only about 1/3rd of the way through Live Wire, but am thoroughly enjoying it. As a guitar nerd myself, like Kyle obviously is, I completely get all his guitar related and musical mentions interspersed throughout the dialogue, and I like it. I haven’t finished it yet but am very interested to see where it’s going and am really happy to support a fellow musician that I grew up listening to. I recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2023Hollywood needs to pay attention to writers like Kyle. This is EXACTLY what we want to see. Brute force scifi thrillers with a splattering of intelligent horror. This book draws you right in. Kyle's writing style is like a Xindi milk drip flowing into your neck veins making you more and more addicted to every word. I refuse to post any spoilers as the setup online is ideal to entice you. The setup is brilliant, and heart pounding marathon in the middle will make the pages blur with fury, and the payoff will leave you needing more. Kyle Toucher is here to stay ladies and gentlemen. Prepare for the ride.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2023I’m a fan of Toucher’s short fiction and was stoked when I saw he had a novel coming out. It did not disappoint, with three-dimensional characters and a writing voice dripping with wit. While the idea of towers coming to life and stomping around the desert is a little wild, the story crackles with life because of the characters and the intense imagery. For those who like stories of grand conspiracies, this is a great book for you. If you’re more of a straight horror reader, there’s plenty of ghastly imagery and scenarios for you too. I’m excited to read more from this literary universe!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2023This kicks tail...no doubt about it. And, it's got a wonderfully wacky idea too! Transmission towers in the desert that uproot themselves to wreck the place, AND they send out a signal that makes people go crazy (and kill people, of course), now that's called a good time! Best part is, the story moves fast and has really cool characters, the truck driver, Ken, was probably the best one. Also: the numerous transcripts that are part of the story were excellent, and help keep the story pacing moving, while assisting in the explanation along the way. This one is worth ponying up the dough to get, this guy can write a thriller.

I can't wait to read more from Toucher! Bring it on!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2023Sadly this had potential but turned out awful. The author ripped off a bunch this story and didn't do it well to boot. If he had made an original story it may have been good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amped up horror
This book is nuts.
Flat out crazy. It is also fun and creative and exciting and horrific. I love the storm atmosphere and sheer panic that ensues when things go sideways. I will say you do have to pay attention at times, I lost focus and had to go back an reread a couple of times. I love the interviews with Nikki, she's quite a sarcastic piece of work but I loved her. Want a different kind of horror that will take you on a trip? This is it.
