It’s dangerous out there…
On the road.
The highways, byways and backroads of America are teeming day and night with regular folks. Moms and dads making long commutes. Teenagers headed to the beach. Bands on their way to the next gig. Truckers pulling long hauls. Families driving cross country to visit their kin.
But there are others, too. The desperate and the lost. The cruel and the criminal.
Theirs is a world of roadside honky-tonks, truck stops, motels, and the empty miles between destinations. The unseen spaces.
And there are even stranger things. Places that aren’t on any map. Wayfaring terrors and haunted legends about which seasoned and road-weary travelers only whisper.
But those are just stories. Aren’t they?
Find out for yourself as you get behind the wheel with some of today’s finest authors of the dark and horrific as they bring you these harrowing tales from the road.
Tales that could only be spawned by the endless miles of America’s lost highways.
So go ahead and hop in. Let’s take a ride.

Interview with the editor:
So what makes Lost Highways: Dark Fictions From the Road so special?
Lost Highways comes at the theme of road stories with the desire to push the boundaries of what that theme means. Because of that, it collects authors of diverse levels of experience and notoriety in the worlds of horror and dark fiction. This brings together voices like Joe R. Lansdale, Cullen Bunn, Josh Malerman, Damien Angelica Walters, Rio Youers, Bracken MacLeod, Rachel Autumn Deering, doungjai gam with Ed Kurtz, and Kristi DeMeester. All of these unique voices bring a fresh and often unexpected take on the theme.
What made you think of this theme for the anthology?
Road trips can be fun but they can also be long and boring. And while you can read a book to yourself to pass the time, it’s not a very social experience. So Lost Highways was born out of the idea that...here is a book of road stories that people might crack open and read aloud to each other while actually on the road. I envisioned a car full of people at night, gathered around the dim overhead light, telling road trip horror stories to each other the same way people gather around campfires and tell stories of ghosts and axe murderers. That’s what thrilled me about the idea.
Tell us about your favorite stories in the book?
Ward: I don’t pick favorites. An anthology is like a symphony or a mix-tape. Every story is placed where it is for a reason and serves a purpose. I’m no oracle but if I had to pick a sampling of the many stories that I bet people will really respond to, those would be Bracken MacLeod’s “Back Seat,” Rachel Autumn Deering’s “Dew Upon the Wing,” and Josh Malerman’s “Room 4 at the Haymaker.”

Since its founding in August 2012, Crystal Lake Publishing has quickly become one of the world’s leading publishers of Dark Fiction and Horror books in print, eBook, and audio formats.
While we strive to present only the highest quality fiction and entertainment, we also endeavour to support authors along their writing journey. We offer our time and experience in non-fiction projects, as well as author mentoring and services, at competitive prices.
With several Bram Stoker Award wins and many other wins and nominations, Crystal Lake Publishing puts integrity, honor, and respect at the forefront of our publishing operations.
We strive for each book and outreach program we spearhead to not only entertain and touch or comment on issues that affect our readers, but also to strengthen and support the Dark Fiction field and its authors.
Not only do we find and publish authors we believe are destined for greatness, but we strive to work with men and woman who endeavour to be decent human beings who care more for others than themselves, while still being hard working, driven, and passionate artists and storytellers.
Crystal Lake Publishing is and will always be a beacon of what passion and dedication, combined with overwhelming teamwork and respect, can accomplish. We endeavour to know each and every one of our readers, while building personal relationships with our authors, reviewers, bloggers, podcasters, bookstores, and libraries.
We will be as trustworthy, forthright, and transparent as any business can be, while also keeping most of the headaches away from our authors, since it’s our job to solve the problems so they can stay in a creative mind. Which of course also means paying our authors.
We do not just publish books, we present to you worlds within your world, doors within your mind, from talented authors who sacrifice so much for a moment of your time.
There are some amazing small presses out there, and through collaboration and open forums we will continue to support other presses in the goal of helping authors and showing the world what quality small presses are capable of accomplishing. No one wins when a small press goes down, so we will always be there to support hardworking, legitimate presses and their authors. We don’t see Crystal Lake as the best press out there, but we will always strive to be the best, strive to be the most interactive and grateful, and even blessed press around. No matter what happens over time, we will also take our mission very seriously while appreciating where we are and enjoying the journey.
What do we offer our authors that they can’t do for themselves through self-publishing?
We are big supporters of self-publishing (especially hybrid publishing), if done with care, patience, and planning. However, not every author has the time or inclination to do market research, advertise, and set up book launch strategies. Although a lot of authors are successful in doing it all, strong small presses will always be there for the authors who just want to do what they do best: write.
What we offer is experience, industry knowledge, contacts and trust built up over years. And due to our strong brand and trusting fanbase, every Crystal Lake Publishing book comes with weight of respect. In time our fans begin to trust our judgment and will try a new author purely based on our support of said author.
To date we’ve published around 100 books, and with each launch we strive to fine-tune our approach, learn from our mistakes, and increase our reach. We continue to assure our authors that we’re here for them and that we’ll carry the weight of the launch and dealing with third parties while they focus on their strengths—be it writing, interviews, blogs, signings, etc.
We also offer several mentoring packages to authors that include knowledge and skills they can use in both traditional and self-publishing endeavours.
We look forward to launching many new careers.
This is what we believe in. What we stand for. This will be our legacy.
Welcome to Crystal Lake Publishing—Tales from the Darkest Depths.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2020Anthology of dark stories with road / motor vehicle themes and plenty of despair and insanity. Highlights include a piece about negotiating with the grim reaper by Joe R. Lansdale a superb tale from Damien Angelica Walters concerning a pilgrimage around the alters of strange gods. Lisa Kroger’s story considers one domestic violence victim’s search for a defense from (or revenge against) her assailant and Orrin Grey’s tale about a death cult and the rest stop where the narrator’s sister was murdered stand out in this collection of (time) warped road trips. Other authors that contributed noteworthy pieces include: Kelli Owen, Nick Kolakowski, Cullen Bunn and Rio Youers. Not confirmed, but I read somewhere that editors D. Alexander Ward and Brian Keene were both institutionalized as the result of a road rage incident shortly after this book was released by Crystal Lake Publishing in 2018.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2020The road and the act of traveling is a great theme for an anthology and after reading this I can just marvel at the variety of stories which fit it. They ran the gamut and from the first story till the last they were all great. This is as good a collection as I've had the pleasure of reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2021There’s a couple of good ones here, but overall I thought most of the stories were not as on target as they could have been. Briefly getting into a car does not a road story make.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2018A solid anthology. I was quite impressed with the variety of tales with the "from the road" theme. My fave was Rachel Autumn Deering's "Dew Upon the Wing" - a grieving woman hits the road at night and meets The Gentleman. It's the right mix of smart dialogue, psychological war, and unsettlingly surreal.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2018Liked this one a lot. A fan of "road" films and horror stories here I found this a great entertaining read. Support indie releases; you won't regret this anthology.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2020The premise of this collection is simple. The road is a weird place. There are quite a few good stories in here. However, the weaker ones do get a bit tedious. That is the only reason this isn't a 5-star book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2019Nothing wrong with the delivery of this book. I just did not care for the stories. I like horror stories and so forth but these were gross and bloody like a kid’s comic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The road trips that keep on going
Following on from Gutted, C.H.U.D. Lives and other anthologies from Crystal Lake comes Lost Highways. A bumper collection of 26 short stories with one thing in common the open road.
With so many stories I was spoilt for choice, but some of my favourites were:
Not From Detroit by Joe R Lansdale: An elderly couple are very much in love. This is a beautifully written story and so heart-warming. This story that love will conquer all even in the face of death.
Jim’s Meats by Kelli Owen: A couple are on a road trip and are running out of petrol, but pulling over at a petrol station, just made it dangerous. This story built the tension up to the final chase. This is a story I would love to be a full novel. Whilst a lot is unknown about the Jim’s meat and the residents of the town, your imagination can join the dots.
Your Pound of Flesh by Nick Kolakowski: Hitchhikers are a regular feature in road trip stories but this story had a twist when Jill Cafferty stopped to pick up a young girl in distress. This story takes you on the hunt for a serial killer. Incorporated in this story was the difficult topic of domestic violence which was handled with sensitivity. The author takes you on an emotional journey which near the end will have you picking up speed to find out what happens. The twist to the story was a surprise and the ending made the story whole.
Having read the majority of Crystal Lakes anthologies, I knew that I need to add to my collection when this was released. Whilst I recognised quite a few of the authors, there were still authors I had not read and I admire the dedication that the publisher puts into finding the various authors to keep anthology fresh. As usual the art work on the cover and in the book was exquisite. Each story was unique and with various length will keep you captivated throughout your read and possible you may not want to read this if you are planning your own road trip. Although it may be a good survival guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Superior Collection
In my experience, collections of dark fiction stories can be a very mixed bag, but these stories are consistently inventive and intriguing. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good collection
I bought this book for Joe R Lansdale’s story - Not from Detroit - and it was my favourite, but I did enjoy the rest of the tales
A good collection of short stories, ideal for a bedtime read
