Regency England is under threat in this page-turning romantic adventure! For fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Jane Aiken Hodge and Jane Austen.
With Napoleon’s spies hidden all over England, no one can be trusted…
1805, England
Six years ago, Willoughby Rossington’s father was murdered while searching for the head of a smuggling ring.
Taken under the wing of his uncle, who is running a counter-intelligence operation against Napoleon’s spies, Willoughby is assigned to take up his father’s last mission – and to avenge his death.
He encounters a young serving woman, Beth, whose resilience against her master’s attempts to break her strikes a chord in him and he reluctantly takes her with him when he leaves town.
But it soon becomes clear that they have a common enemy…
Their two lives become intertwined as they race against the villains that plot to destroy them both.
Will they uncover the truth behind the smuggling ring and find who is responsible for the death of Willoughby’s father? Can they stay safe as they continue to work their way deeper into the mystery?
And, most importantly, will love conquer all? Or will duty and honour come between them?
TO LOVE, HONOUR AND OBEY is a sparkling, traditional British, Regency romance novel full of adventure and espionage, with a love story at its heart.
‘Well written with loads of historical detail and intriguing characters. A super read.’ – Julia Ibbotson, author of A Shape on the Air
‘A gripping start is followed by lots of twists and turns before the leader of the smuggling and spy ring is unmasked.’ – A Darn Good Read

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2016I liked this book a lot. In fact, I stayed up WAY to late to finish it. The book, in subtle (and some not so subtle) ways addresses a lot of issues of the time woven into what is less a romance novel and more an adventure/mystery. Don't worry, if you love Regency romances, this has enough of the flavor. It just does not have even one ballroom scene or any discussion of fashion, "the season" or "the marriage mart". A refreshing change, in my opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2021This books touches on some deep subjects including rape, trafficking, smuggling, murder, and espionage. I really enjoyed the love and redemption found between the two mc's. I would've enjoyed a more detailed ending but it wasn't abrupt by any means. Good story!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2018I received a complimentary copy of this book from Sapere Books in exchange for an honest review.
The premise of the book sounded interesting to me, and I typically enjoy romantic historical fiction. Let's talk, then, why only three stars:
1. There was no romance. For a book billed as a romance, the relationship between Willoughby and Beth never went anywhere. There were hints that the two were attracted to each other, but neither ever acted on it.
2. Beth's speech was inconsistent. She was a lower class woman, and sometimes she would speak improperly and sometimes not. I'd like the author to pick one or the other.
3. There was very little depth to the main characters. They were one-dimensional and the reader doesn't see much growth.
4. The plot moved along, but there were areas of confusion. For example, when the silent partner of the smuggling is revealed there's some other information that comes out to make the reader dislike that character, but the information is not tied to anything before. (I don't want to be more specific because I hate reviews with spoilers!)
5. Smuggling was a big part of life during the Napoleonic Wars and the smugglers are not all painted as evil, which I liked. Realistically, some of these people were just trying to stay alive.
So, three stars for the book. Better character development would have improved the plot and made me care more about these characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2016Danger, intrigue, romance this book had it all. Well worth reading. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2016This is a story about various young man who works for the English Government hunting traitors during the war with Napoleon.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2019This was quite the story of intrigue with an interesting romance. A lot of suspense that kept me guessing until the end. The author developed good characters which added to the story. A good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2017Lousy writing, dull story, abrupt ending. Couldn't stay interested. Poor character development and a silly premise. Not recommended in the slightest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written
This is the first book I have read by Valerie Holmes and was not disappointed. It was a pleasure to read as the dialogue was authentic and flowed unlike some authors who seem to struggle with inappropriate words because of poor research. The plot was not original but the telling of it was refreshing with the characters being well formed. A testament to the book is that you can hear the characters speak rather than just reading the words. I am continuing their story.

3.0 out of 5 stars fun
exciting melodrama...leave all rational thought behind, this is "silent-movie" stuff....exquisitely wicked villains, bumbling naive hero, bad-girl smart heroine, grim setting, fast pace, lots of violence, odd social mores...reads like a pilot for a tv-drama...?? totally weird, but fun...suspend all disbelief....

5.0 out of 5 stars A well rounded story
I have read several of Valerie Holmes's books, but this is my favourite to date. The story moves at a good pace, and whilst I have not visited the Yorkshire moors or coastline, To Love, Honour and Obey, brought the atmosphere to mind. The story relates the harshness of life and poverty and abuse of the common folk who lived inland and in coastal regions at the turn of the nineteenth century. And the exploitation of the weak by manipulative bullies.
Searching to find his father's killer, Willoughby, a member of the gentry, encounters trouble when he meets Beth, a girl of the streets and an unlikely heroine, on whom he learns to rely and she him, for her safety. Treachery lurks in the background, on both sides of the social divide, and family loyalties of the elite are tested to breaking point. Will he succeed in his mission, or disappear as his father did? And what would happen to Beth if that were to happen? The story ends, leaving one to wonder if there will be a sequel? I certainly hope so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never
read any of this author's work before and must admit to thoroughly enjoying this storyline. It kept me enthralled all the way through. As I lived in the West Riding area as a child but now due to the name change live in West Yorkshire it is lovely to have a storyline set in this part of the country instead of just London as many historical love stories are. I highly recommend this book and am now looking to download book 2 which hopefully will be just as good as this one.
