With rare exceptions, when in the mood for romance (always), I read historical romance novels. Lately, however, I was experiencing a burgeoning sense of ennui with historical romances when someone suggested that I read one of Jill Brashear's contemporary romance books.

I randomly chose "Love, Lacey Donovan." From adorable to downright funny, and occasionally dipping into the possibility of heartbreak, her writing was a delightful surprise. About halfway through the book, I succumbed to an unexpected bout of sniffling—much to my husband's bewilderment. I had stumbled on a bitter truth—despite my collection of how-to-write-a-romance-novel books, I'm never going to write a novel as delightful as "Love, Lacey Donovan."

It seems I've stumbled upon an unexpected love affair with contemporary romances, at least Jill's. Having finished "Love, Lacey Donovan" at 4:33 this morning, I've already purchased the two remaining books in the series!

This book isn't your typical contemporary romance; the storyline delves into book lovers and quirky characters. Lacey is scared of love; she has a regrettable history of rejection and shies away from being close to anyone until she meets Beckett; his tall, dark, broody, but sensitive nerdy guy personality wins you over very quickly. The author plays with role reversal in this opposites attract millionaire romance. This book is steamy, heartbreaking, and sometimes just interesting enough to keep you turning pages. I enjoyed the story and loved the ending.

This story intrigued me from the blurb, but when it opened, I needed clarification about the book's format. Instead of a prologue, we get book recommendations. While I admire the thoughts and suggestions, these are better suited for the end of the book, especially if they have nothing to do with the story.

As I read the book, the reviews make more sense as it is one of the main character's jobs. Lacey Donovan is a bookworm who loves coffee and a few simple things in life. She is a tatted-up dog whisper who likes to move around a lot and experience all sorts of things. A chance meeting with a doggy icebreaker at a park leads us into this storyline.

Apparently, her mantra of "book boyfriends are much better than the real thing "is blown out of the water when she meets Beckett. He is tall, dark, and broody and gets her pheromones dancing. Her book club is comical. This book is from her pov mostly.

I find it comical the big sexy Beckett is also a nerd just a little. He is all grumpy, broody, and hot as hell. Beckett is more than meets the eye, but you must get past the exterior to find out more about him. I like that the author has a quirky female and an equally profound male character. This book speaks to the bibliophile and authors with characters that we can relate to.

So this book is complicated for them both, but I appreciated Beckett making an effort. The book reviews on the story make much more sense now. Beckett is definitely swoony when he is trying too hard. This book gets steamy with lust overriding their brains; they can't help but satisfy their carnal desires. Will Beckett make her believe in love again and risk her heart?

The ending of this book was sweet, and I enjoyed the storyline. I do enjoy the twist the author throws into this story. I find the role reversal in this romance intriguing. I like how open Beckett is and how easily he communicates later in the story. Lacey, on the hand, it is heartbreaking to watch her stumble threw this whirlwind romance and deny her own feelings.

I loved Beckett and Lacey’s story. I really enjoyed how they each grew over the course of the book. Lacey had to learn to trust her feelings and allow herself to love again. Beckett had to have the courage to show people who he really was. He had to own his authorship. I’m so glad they didn’t give up on each other.
I will definitely read more books by this author.

This is a sweet and fun story of Lacey and Beackett and their gradual journey to love. Lacey is learning to love again and Beckett has his own secrets. Both have reasons for holding back and both grown immensely over the story and learn to love. Fun, sweet moments, and a HEA.

    Spoilers

The h is a nomad. Her parents threw her out when she refused to go to college. She moves from place to place looking for a permanent home. She works at a local bookstore in a small town and walks shelter dogs on the side. She loves to read and romance is her favorite genre. Her heart was broken when she was in high school by a boyfriend who had cheated on her. She only has book boyfriends because they cannot hurt her.

She meets a mother and daughter in the park after one of her dogs run off. The mother winds up adopting the dog for her daughter. The h offers to continue walking the dog. She meets the woman’s brother...the H. He’s kind of a dorky, but hunky Clark Kent hero. The H sets out to win the h’s heart. They get a HFN.

Likes : the anti alpha, four eyed hero was very likable. The tattooed, nose ring wearing heroine was equally adorable. The two had mega chemistry. Good banter all around from the main characters to the women from the book club. There was relationship development before the couple hit the sheets.

No likes: HFN and not HEA. Told only from the h’s POV.

A 3.5 star recommend with a big ding on the single POV and HFN

I loved this book. The storyline was unusual which made it more interesting. I liked how Lacey and Beckett first met and how their relationship progressed. The chemistry was great and the banter was fun. The secrets and twists in this story made it stand out and was refreshing. There were a couple of loose ends with the spiked drink and Lacey's parents but it was still very enjoyable.

This was the first book I have read by this author and I recommend it.

Wow, I adored Love, Lacey Donnovan by Jill Brashear. The author was new to me and I was pleasantly surprised with LLD. Lacey and Beckett are great and I felt a need to know what happens to some other characters. I think it's the perfect way to start a series.I did think it was a bit odd that Lacey accepted a lame excuse without questions and was so quick to forget, even though she was so mad and angry with a character. That didn't make me like the book less, but it felt weird considering the drama she was making about it.Other than that, I don't have much to complain about. The story is interesting and original, I don't think I have ever read a book like that before. Even the setting of the novel is delightful.I'll definitely read the rest of the series and other books by Jill Brashear.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book that starts off very strongly and sweeps you up into the story. Liked both Beckett and Lacey although her character irritated the heck out of me towards the end with her needing honesty by the author yet never being honest with others herself. Anyway enjoyed the book and ready for the next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars This book left me confused in many ways…
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 4, 2021
I’m not quite sure how to structure my review, so, I’m just going to list the pros and cons and let you decide if it’s something you’re into….

    Cons
It started off well, went down hill in the 2nd half of book.

I don’t understand why Beckett liked Lacey; they barely knew each. The romance moved too fast, not really insta love, but, still a bit too fast; One minute they’re meeting and going on one date, next thing, he apparently loves her?

Lacey’s whole jealously didn’t make sense. And her judgement about Beckett (& other authors) using pen names was wrong and not her place to judge.

I did not understand her whole reaction to the incident where she got spiked at the bar. It made no sense why she was defending Xan, whom she had only just met, so much. But, was mad at Beckett for actually caring and not trusting Xan’s explanation (as they shouldn’t, they don’t know him well). Also, we never actually got a conclusion to that plot; we still don’t know what really happened that night at the bar. So, that was disappointing.

I was also disappointed that her whole ordeal with her dad and having to pay him back for her education was also not explored further. I would have loved it if she had actually stood up for her self against him.

That all brings me to my main issue with this book. Lacey was unlikeable and had messed up priorities. Things she should have cared about, she didn’t. Instead, focusing on the wrong things…sigh.

    Pros
I actually liked the bookish references.

Beckett was actually a sweetheart. I loved him (he deserved better than Lacey…smh).

The side characters were fun and I loved the banter they had.

A previous review stated the book was packed with sweetness. I actually liked that aspect of the book, it’s refreshing to read a book that is, at its core, a really sweet romance.

    Conclusion
With all those cons, it might sound like I didn’t like the book. But, I actually did. Overall, even though the heroine was mostly unbearable, the book was pretty fun to read/listen to. It was also well written.
