- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2022This is such a lovely story of empathy, as it focuses on helping those that society have rejected and discarded; the unwed mothers and their children. I feel Gideon and Patience as noble and generous people, which gives us readers a clear message that, contrary to most assumptions of them being shallow and ostentatious, there are those of the gentry in Regency times who were truly conscientious, honorable and compassionate.
One thing that I’ve always loved about Miss Kleinman’s novels is that they have this quality of subtlety, like a loud whisper in a noisy overcrowded room. This work demands attention and yet, it does not have the hysterics and over dramatization of people and situations. On that note, I love the gradual development of Gideon’s and Patience’s feelings and affections for each other as it is more genuine and deep. There is none of the turbulent love-at-first-sight feelings and crazy rollercoaster emotions that are depicted in many historical romances; yet, I feel myself drawn into the characters’ reserved and toned-down emotions, exchanges and revelations, because this is how majority of gentlemen and ladies in Regency times would have behaved. One thing I wished for though is that the lead character’s romance should have been given more attention and focus. Other than that, this is a highly recommended read for those who desire for a heartwarming love story any given day.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2022"Love's Legacy" is a Regency romance. The story was told in a distant point of view, where we're told what everyone is thinking and doing, but we never got inside someone's head. The characters were both bland (with little distinct about them) and superficial. From the moment they met, Patience and Gideon offended each other and would act coldly toward the other until, suddenly, they were all friendly again though usually nothing had been resolved. Each was too proud to apologize or to explain a misunderstanding. For example, Gideon withheld even the most general explanation about why he warned her away from a bad guy. Patience refused to trust his judgment and even though she didn't like the guy, she kept him as a friend to defy Gideon's attempt to 'control' her. We're told that they sometimes got along and managed not to offend the other for a week or two, but the actual scenes mostly showed them in conflict. Then, at the very end, nothing had really changed but one kiss convinced Patience that this was true love and suddenly they're in perfect accord.
Patience had two suitors that she got along with very well, and she went to them when she needed help or advice. But she rejected them because there was no "spark" (um, fighting?). Incidentally, the main characters all had very modern views, which brings up the numerous historical inaccuracies. For example, characters tended to just show up at people's doors without writing to tell them that they were coming. Patience just showed up on her uncle's doorstep (from whom her family was estranged) in the evening, without sending a letter ahead about her visit, and with no plans to stay at an inn. She simply assumed he'd read the letter from her father (though she didn't know what it said) and provide her with a home and financial support. Wow! Then there was a scandal that, um, wasn't a scandal that's at the root of their family conflict. (Her mother pursued her best friend's betrothed before she knew they were betrothed, then immediately backed off when told and wished them happy. She was disowned even though the people who waited to tell her were at fault.)
There was no sex or bad language.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reading
This book is for the romantic at heart. It also has a very strong story line that keeps it very interesting . It's not all dresses and lace. I enjoyed it and would recommend for a lazy afternoon reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful read for anyone who loves Regency Romance, and also those who believe they don't.
I jumped at the chance of reading, Love's Legacy, prior to publication, not because I enjoy Regency Romance, but because I love Natalie Kleinman's Regency Romance. She writes with such ease and skill, taking the reader back to the days when Bath was the heyday, of the upperclass social scene. You can picture the scene. And her characters, are like friends who I can't wait to meet again. Such as the headstrong Patience, who's sharp tongue frequently gets her into trouble. The gorgeous Lord Gideon Lacey, and dubious Jasper Dysart, who has his way with women, and plans to add Patience to his list of conquests. A liason, Gideon is determined to prevent.
Will Patience and Gideon, spend their days quarrelling, or get their act together?
For those of you who haven't read Natalie Kleinman's books before, you've a treat in store.
