Luke: Learning to Love #3 Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 538 ratings

Can Luke learn to love the man who left him?

Headmaster Luke Lawson is committed to saving his boarding school before a cash crisis sinks it. He’ll do anything to keep it afloat, even if that means accepting help from the man who broke his heart at uni.

Nathan’s offer to teach for free could be a blessing as long as Luke can harden his bruised heart. That’s tough when they’ll need to share living quarters and have a history of hook-ups. But Luke knows being compatible in bed isn’t enough to build trust. It can’t be when Nathan has always left him before morning.

This time around, it feels different. Nathan's work overseas has changed him. Touched him. Opened a locked chamber in his heart that Luke is beginning to think must have been bruised in the past too.

As pressure mounts, can Luke trust that Nathan’s committed this time—not only to his school but to a shared future with him long term?

♥ Featuring a second chance at first love in close proximity, Luke is the third standalone novel in the Learning to Love series. Set in England's glorious county of Cornwall, each book has a fulfilling happily ever after. ♥

CW: Non-explicit mentions of childhood anxieties.

Con Riley lives on the wild and rugged Devonshire coast, with her head in the clouds, and her feet in the Atlantic Ocean.

Injury curtailed her enjoyment of outdoor pursuits, so writing fiction now fills her free time. Love, loss, and redemption shape her romance stories, and her characters are flawed in ways that makes them live and breathe.

When not people watching, or wrangling her own boy band of teen sons, she spends time staring at the sea from her kitchen window. If you see her, don't disturb her—she’s probably thinking up new plots.

Great series ❤️
This was a hard won HEA for Luke and Nathan! They've known each other for years, so I knew their journey wouldn't be smooth sailing. Their emotions were raw and real. I felt the hesitation in Luke, not wanting his heart to be torn to pieces once again by Nathan. My heart went out to Nathan just the same, he was struggling in his own way. Beautiful story of love, letting go and trusting in one's self. I loved the vulnerability in the characters, it made them feel human. We all have our weaknesses and trusting can be difficult. The love between Luke and Nathan prevailed ❤️

I've been reading Con Riley's books now for a while. I only discovered this whole genre about a year and a half ago, which is something for a 57-year-old. I finally get to see myself in books that I love to read. That's a gift for an English teacher who spent most of his life having to imagine that he was the princess sometimes and the night and shining armor sometimes. Never knowing where I fit in. But this book. This book showed me not only who I am as a gay man, but as a teacher of 29 of those 57 years. I've learned so much from you comma Con Riley. About life, about love, and in this book, about listening. And speaking truth. My kids have already done a quick right and response to that incredible quote comparison is the thief of joy! I'd never heard that. But what truth.
This isn't a normal review, I guess. Everything I've read by conradley has been a roller coaster of incredible emotions.
I highly recommend this book. I highly recommend all of Conl Riley's books. Go back and read from the first of the Learning to Love series if you haven't: Charles. My name. And oh how have I seen myself!
No, you don't have to read them in order. But it certainly is a journey worth taking.
And now I've got to go read about Austin. And then go back to Charles!
Thank you, Con Riley. For showing an old teacher some new insights into literature and life.

"Luke" marks another memorable visit to Cornwall in another compelling and beautifully written story in this series. I have wanted to learn more about the serious and seemingly sad Glynn Harber headmaster since Book 1, and his second chance HEA was quite heartfelt.

Luke has secretly been in love with his longtime friend/off-and-on no-strings hookup Nathan for years, and has been left behind - emotionally devastated - by him one too many times. But Nathan has also long-harbored deeper feelings that he's spent years running from and is only now prepared to face.

Theirs is an emotional road toward repairing their friendship and admitting their true feelings, though it wasn't as drawn out as I'd expected. Luke is a deeply feeling man and quick to forgive - a bit too quick, IMO - and this story is told entirely from his POV.

As much as I felt I got to know Nathan through Luke's eyes, it still only seemed to scratch the surface of the man's true depth. This is as much Nathan's redemption story as it is a second chance at love for him and Luke, and I would've welcomed his POV as well (even though this series features single POVs).

The books in this series do work as standalones, but I'd recommend reading them all in order for maximum enjoyment, given the recurring characters and overarching struggling school storyline. I have especially enjoyed the strong friendships among all of the MCs and the commitment and passion the Glynn Harber school staff have about their work. I received an advance reading e-copy of this book and have left this honest review voluntarily. (Also read in KU.)

I loved this story! Was it because I’m a mother and grandmother or was it that my background was Early Childhood Education? I’m truly not sure, but this book meant so much to me. In its fundamental sense this book is about love: unconditional, protective, parental or found love in a found relationship. It also included the love that an adult can give to a child and that a child will give right back, with a smile. Unfortunately, there were some cases of un-love where a person abuses another person or becomes manipulative but then that is offset by the love of the Lawson foster family (found family) where love was emulated and taught.
Don’t get me wrong, this is an M/M romance between great guys, both of whom are educators. One, Luke Lawson we have grown to admire in the previous two books as the headmaster of Glynn Harber and the second, Nathan, we had only heard about through conversations between Hugo and Luke. Nathan was an old uni friend. This was a beautifully written, well-edited romance regardless of who loves whom.
If you like explicit and sentimental M/M romance but love a truly beautiful story of love for all kinds of reasons, read this book. You will not be disappointed. My favorite of the three in this series so far. On a separate note, I couldn’t see Luke as the cover model until his description in the book. I was “seeing” the gooey insides of Luke and not the outside that the world saw. Forceful move by the author! I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews. It gets 10 out of 10 stars!

The long journey for Luke and Nathan began years ago and they didn't even know it.
Luke has loved Nathan since his days at a uni and has permitted Nathan back into his life and bed many times, and that many times watched Nathan walk away. This time will be different.
Nathan has only loved Luke. He has left each encounter to go and save the world. That doesn't make leaving easier.
Can they meet in the valley of Glynn Harber school and finally be vulnerable enough to reveal the pain of their pasts to move forward with their future?
The writing in this book that deals with trauma and its aftermath is a balm to a weary soul. I was caught up in the drama of Nathan and Luke's love story and would be arrested by the prose of Riley's words. Stunning. Moving and brilliant. Gentle and solid. They were breathtaking.
I don't regret the hours of sleep I lost to finish this story. The smiles and tears were worth every minute I could have been sleeping. I'm so glad I didn't miss this beautiful story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really enjoyable and thoughtful read!

    4.5*

This was a very welcome return to Haven school and especially to Luke, the intriguing head. My favourite thing about this series has been the way that the educational environment and philosophy of the school is made prominent, and impacts on the relationships (romantic and otherwise) of the adults involved. This book really delved into that part and as such, I was very on board with a lot of this story.

Luke was a compelling character who I rooted for from the start, especially with the care and focus he brought. It was a bit harder to feel the same for Nathan, as he always felt a bit more distanced. Partly this was due to the narrative structure, and partly the fact of his personality. However my desure for Luke to receive his HEA was more than sufficient to counterbalance any slight reservations Nathan may have presented, and by the end he had won me over too!

*I received a free ARC and I have chosen to leave a review*

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a great story!

Not to be overly dramatic, but I am despondent that I have finished reading this book. I have completely immersed myself in each of Con Riley’s books in this series, and simply cannot wait for the next one which I understand will be Austin’s story. I feel like I know these characters. I want to be their champions as they struggle to face personal and professional crises. What could be a better testament to an author’s ability to weave a story which so completely captures a reader’s interest?
My career has been that of a social worker, and I have a masters degree and several years of experience working with children and families. Con Riley’s insight into dysfunction and childhood development is evident in each of the story’s threads. Put simply... the author knows what they’re talking about!
While each story could be a standalone, I’d heartily suggest that you read each book in order. Recurring characters make significant appearances that enrich the storyline.
Thank you so much for making this book available on KU.

4.0 out of 5 stars I am now a Luke convert.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 28, 2022
What a LUSH book. With each book in this series, I keep thinking nothing will top (no pun intended) Charles and Hugo as this was my first Con Riley. Every time Luke was in a scene, I wasn’t sure how to take him so when I read that he was getting his own book, I was slightly apprehensive.

I am now a Luke convert.

Luke is headmaster at a unique school, and it is failing financially. Luke must try and find a way to keep the school running recognising it as a safe place for students and teachers. Accepting help from an old flame isn’t something he is very excited to do. Nathan and Luke have a history that started in university, yet Nathan keeps running away and Luke can’t do casual anymore. Turns out, neither can Nathan.

Luke and Nathan get spicy fairly quickly, and their history keeps getting in the way of their commitment to each other yet by trusting, they are the best people to help each other.

There is something very endearing reading about strong men being vulnerable and accepting help. Luke and Nathan are just couple GOALS.

And I didn’t think I’d want an Austin book but now, I cannot wait.

Well, if Luke wants donations to fund Glynn Harber, here I am **waves madly**. I would've sold my soul to have had a school like that for my son to attend, instead of the bully-ridden schools he had to endure.

The wonderful Charles Heppel and Hugo, little Tor Trelawney 🥰🥰 and his best mate Maisie. How the teachers take such care of their little charges and actually LISTEN to them instead of simply paying them lip service all the time. This is a real feelgood story.

Luke and Nathan were finally in tune with one another 💕💕, Luke was so strong thanks to his brilliant foster parents, and needed to be in view of everything that went on. This series goes from strength to strength, and Austin's story is eagerly awaited. I do love me a good redemption tale 😊. Absolutely terrific Con Riley. 🥳🥳🥳
