- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2015I loved this book. It was a different spin on ware romance. There was a lot of action and adventure and hot steamy parts as well. It kept me entertained and I cannot wait for book 2.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2015Chloe never knew that her father, a stern accountant who is continuously disappointed in his daughter and her life choices, is none other than the Hangman, the deadliest Wolf-Kind hunter of his generation. Chloe just wants to make her own choices in life, but all control is taken from her when William kidnaps her. She puts up a fight at every turn, but eventually finds out why she was chosen. When she learns that her father killed William’s father and Alpha of the Pack, her feelings towards William as a kidnapper soften. When he is gentle and cares for her well-being, Chloe begins to see things from his perspective and to see him for the strong protector type he really is.
I couldn’t put this book down. AJ Downey’s books are so tense and exciting that it is hard to stop reading them. I’m eagerly awaiting the second and third books in this series.
There were parts, granted, that delved into the annoying tropes of paranormal/romance books, but I almost didn’t care because I was so enthralled with what was going on and how the characters were interacting. I wanted to know what was going to happen next.
AJ Downey and Ryan Kells delve upon the surface of something fascinating: discrimination and pure hatred of wolf-kind/hybrid. This is a concept that makes the easy-read paranormal/romance into a deeper book.
“As reviled as he was, I was my father’s daughter in some of the more important ways. The ones that really counted. Having a backbone was one of those ways. I was also my mother’s daughter. Even though she’d died when I was young, she’d taught me understanding. To look beyond the surface. Past the color of people’s skin, past their clothes or where they lived or how they were raised.” (Kindle locations 3777-3781).
Downey and Kells also go just deep enough into Pack politics and the biological particulars to build a world that I’m interested in. I’m not usually interested in paranormal, though Downey has shown me the better side of romance novels, but I Am the Alpha has more going on than most novels.
Chloe has the right amount of stubbornness and she continuously, at first, fights back even against an insurmountable foe as William. She has spit and fire within her and doesn’t give up until she has completely exhausted all possibilities for escape. Toward the end of the novel, though, she gets even stronger and more stubborn in her convictions. William is a good balance between gentle, sympathetic man to jerk captor wolf-kind. He is the character I most liked.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2015Normally I am not one to put spoilers in my reviews, but I don't think it can be avoided this time. I will try to warn you before I add any spoilers :)
Let me start by saying this was not what I expected. When I was given this book to review, I expected your usual run of the mill ware romance and it is but it is also more in-depth than that.
William is a wolf-kin, he was bitten by another wolf-kin on a full moon decades ago and is now a Moon Forged wolf. His pack alpha, who is also his father, was killed by not just any 'hunter' but by the hangman.
Chloe is a normal everyday girl going about her life. She comes home from a night out with her friends and is kidnapped by William.
William believes that Chloe's father is none other than 'the hangman'. His pack is in a terrible state after the loss of the Alpha and he is on a mission to claim the Alpha title for himself and get justice for his fathers death.
Chloe is very strong minded and puts up quite a fight even managing to run away from William at one point, but she is soon caught. A semi truce is established between the two when Chloe finally realises that she can not escape.
William and Chloe are soon found by Remus and Romulus, William's adoptive twin brothers. The twins are Blood Born wolves and as such are much more aggressive than William or other moon forged wolves. They want Chloe and will stop at nothing to get her. This is where Chloe learns about wolf-kin and that her father is the hangman.
SPOLIER ALERT!!
Somewhere along the way, William and Chloe develop feelings for each other and eventually William claims Chloe as his mate. Romulus bites Chloe turning her into a Moon Forged wolf. From there things get very interesting and I found myself unable to put my kindle down.
This book was amazing from start to finish and I strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance with lots of action.
I received an ARC of this in exchange for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2015I Am the Alpha was my first book by AJ Downey and what a book it was! I really enjoyed reading this book! At first, I am the Alpha starts off very slow. Although the story was well written and interesting for the first half of the book, I kept waiting for the paranormal element to kick into full speed. Once Downey fully embraced the story of the Moon Forged Alpha, this book became captivating and I could hardly put it down. There were so many interesting facts, ideas, and possibilities to this book. You can really tell that the author put a whole lot of thought into the character development and plot. I loved the strength of these two wolves, the heat of their passion, and the room for growth the author left for this series. I am so looking forward to the next installment of Moon Forged.
