If I could use just one word to describe "Mutation" it would be fun! This trade paperback from Markosia Enterprises takes us back to a simpler, exciting time in the super hero genre. It's almost a modern take on the silver age when heroes and villains shouted corny catch phrases as they did battle with each other. Mutation is a blonde-haired idol of millions and protector of Silver City. Mutation battles all manner of super villains including Master Monsoon, The shape-changing Otherman, Vertigo, as well as Giant robots and Egyptian Gods.
Mutation is Trent Tyson,a college student who has little time for his studies or his gorgeous girlfriend Casey as he is always off saving the city from some new menace. The third story, "All the Heroes that Could" is a particular treat as Mutation grows more and more frustrated as he answers the calls of those in need, only to find out that other superheroes have beaten him to the punch...no pun intended. The action is pure two-fisted goodness, unencumbered by gratuitous plot-threads which will never get resolved. Ah, the days when heroes and villains just pummeled each other but it wasn't a "crisis"...
Writer George Singley gives us stories that the reader can just sit back and enjoy without having to take things too seriously. My pet peeve with the major comic publishers is that they've forgotten that comics are supposed to be fun. It seems to me that too many comic writers today are out to show that comics are a serious literary medium and forgetting the rich roots they came from. Thank you Chris Claremont!
The art in Mutation by Ethen Beavers is a animated, cartoon-like style, similar to shows Teen Titans and it is perfectly suited to the style and tone of the stories. Beavers' art is big and bold, and the action virtually leaps off the pages. Jaime Jones and Mark Winters handle the colors and perfectly complement the art with bright, dynamic colors. Clearly these guys have a grasp of what makes a fun and exciting comic book.
The book also features a special sketchbook section which show off some of the various character designs. Markosia has a winner with Mutation!
