A breathtaking blend of mystery and romance! For fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Barbara Erskine and Jane Austen.

Who was Sir Eustace Knowle’s greatest enemy?

Yorkshire, 1816

While visiting his sister’s countryside estate, chronic gambler Sir Eustace Knowle is found beaten to death in the gardens.

With his numerous debts and murky history, there are several people who may have wished him harm.

And now a sinister figure from Knowle’s past has been spotted lurking in the shadows…

Once again, scholar-turned-sleuth

Since this is the third book in the Rutherford series (three is not enough), I am making this a summary review. Lady Anthea and Lord Justin are a great pair of detectives among the elevated members of British society, having access to drawing rooms at every level. While Justin is all a man of his time and class should be, his niece Anthea knows how to play the accomplished young lady with all the airs and graces while harboring a hoyden deep inside who wishes adventures, travel and explorations before settling down as a respectable matron.

In solving murders Justin has the edge; he has been a soldier for the Crown and though "retired" from that position, is known to have been dedicated, trustworthy, competent and well thought of by superiors and inferiors alike. He has maintained the skills of riding, shooting and polite combat-fisticuffs at Jacksons as example- while having an extensive knowledge of antiquities, music and theater. His travels as an antiquities explorer provide a cover for sub rosa work in the Empire.

Anthea has less freedom to explore but her vast knowledge of Society and its players permits her insights that frequently expand our understanding of others motivations and actions. She is lovely, intelligent ad possessor of enthusiams and energy that manage to precipitate her into less than ladylike situations. Like Jo March, there are times when she "regrets having not been born a boy."

These two, with the assistance of Bow Street Runner Watts and varied others, unlock murder, mayhem and theft affecting their friends and families. The writing highlights the difficulties of moving in a rigidly stratified, codified and close lipped society. For all that there must be some exposition of rules of conduct and dress, the pace is well maintained. When the culprit(s) are revealed, the mystery has been well constructed and fun.

    I want more!

Intrigue, mystery, depth of characters and a clean read. Just wish the love interests were resolved.

This story was so different from her other works: First of all, there was hardly any romance to be categorized as "Romance" novel, it was a pure mystery-solving story; Secondly, the plot moved very slowly to almost crawling, and it wasn't very exciting either; Thirdly, the writing lacked Ms. Ley's usual wit and humor, it was quite a boring read actually.

In addition, I was not very pleased with the ending either. I felt the villain who plotted revenge for 14 years obviously held strong bitterness toward people and incident that convicted him, I felt the decent thing to do was to at least offer him a better justice this time. One more bone to pick, the cover picture of this hard cover, large print edition was not very attractive and did not reflect the story at all. What a shame, I usually enjoyed Ms. Ley's books so well.

From back of the book: Years of exile in an Australian convict settlement fuelled his passion for revenge against three men. Now the day of reckoning was at hand... Sir Eustace Knowle was found battered to death. Threatening, anonymous letters had already been delivered to two others in the party gathered for the wedding of Sir George Marton's daughter. A chain of mysterious event and frightening "accidents" followed. It was at the masked ball that the Honourable Justin Rutherford and his niece, Anthea, witnessed the first incident--but this seemed an unlikely start to one of their famous adventures...
