The Mercy Killings: Children are going missing in Victorian England (Esther & Jack Enright Mystery Book 6) Kindle Edition
Innocent lives are being taken in Victorian England…
London, 1896
Detective Sergeant Jack Enright, recently transferred to the rural backwaters of Essex, is disgusted to find reports of the discovery of three infant corpses in as many months.
It soon becomes clear that his uncle, Percy, working in London’s Scotland Yard has also uncovered cases of babies being murdered.
These clearly are not one-off acts of desperation by impoverished mothers, but a widespread plot to take young lives.
Who is behind these baby killings? Can they be stopped?
And will Esther find herself, once more, at the heart of the investigation…?
THE MERCY KILLINGS is the sixth crime thriller in an exciting new historical series, the Esther and Jack Enright Mysteries, a traditional British detective series set in Victorian London and packed full of suspense.

About the author

David was born in post-war Nottingham, and educated at Nottingham High School. After obtaining a Law degree he became a career-long criminal law practitioner and academic, emigrating in 1989 to Australia, where he still lives.
Combining his two great loves of History and the English language he began writing historical novels as an escape from the realities of life in the criminal law, but did not begin to publish them until close to fulltime retirement, when digital publishing offered a viable alternative to literary agencies, print publishers and rejection slips.
Now blessed with all the time in the world, his former hobby has become a fulltime occupation as he enjoys life in rural New South Wales with his wife, sons and grandchildren to keep him firmly grounded in the reality of the contemporary world.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2020This book was much better than the last. It returned to the excellence of the first books in the series. The crime was based on a gritty shameful happening in parts of Victorian England.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2019This series is getting very predictable Just the same old characters and plots. I dont think i will read the rest.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2021Another great story from a fantastic author. This one has to be my favorite and the best in the series so far. I love the part where they have to ask Aunt Beattie to help out, that had me laughing. I also loved near the end when Jack has to talk to Percy and give him the same words of wisdom that he gave Jack years ago. The story overall was the kind of story that just gets you right in the feels. Can't wait to see what Percy's final decision is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Enjoyable Victorian Thriller
I have always enjoyed thillers set in Victorian England so I am fortunate to have found David Field's Jack and Esther Enright series. The feeling of the period is excellent and the stories are well researched and well written. Jack and Esther are an engaging couple and the interplay with Jack's Uncle Percy make these books so enjoyable. This is the fifth book in the series and Is ki have already pre-ordered the new book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cracking read
The year is 1896 and Detective Sergeant Jack Enright, now working in Essex, is dealing with a particularly gruesome case involving the discovery of three babies’ bodies. After consulting his uncle Percy, who works at Scotland Yard, it soon becomes apparent that these are not isolated cases as he is also investigating the discovery of the corpses of infants. Someone is clearly killing babies in the south of England but why and can they be stopped before more bodies are discovered?
It’s been a while since I read any of David Field’s books but the characters came flooding back straight away. Jack is no longer working in the capital but the cases have not got any easier as he is faced with investigating the murders of several young babies. He is once again paired with his uncle Percy, still working as a detective in London, when he realises that their cases cross paths. The case is a sad one and one that is very much of its time, showing the divide between the rich and poor in Victorian England.
One of the strengths of this series is the characterisation and the relationships between the main protagonist. Jack’s wife, Esther, is very much a forward-thinking woman and her husband and uncle-in-law are always keen to involve her in their investigations. It is Percy who is my favourite, however, and I love how he is highly regarded in his work life yet a downtrodden husband at home!
Despite the grim subject matter, The Mercy Killings also contains a fair amount of humour, not least when poor Jack encounters a lady of the night! This definitely lightened the mood!
This is a great series and while this can be read as a standalone, I would highly recommend reading all of the previous books as they are all engaging and cracking reads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mercy
On the surface it seems a noble cause to help unmarried mothers and their babies. Death and corruption creep in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Excellent if horrendous story involving baby farming. In Victorian London. The fact that this situation was true makes it even more horrendous. Excellent read for anyone who wants to know what the Victorian era was really like.
