Merry Measure (The Wright Brothers Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 3,286 ratings

Arlo Wright’s introduction to his sexuality came when he saw his older brother’s best friend, Jack Cooper, in his sweaty football kit. Unfortunately, he didn’t have long to enjoy the revelation because he promptly knocked himself out on a table.

Relations between them have never really moved on from that auspicious beginning. Arlo is still clumsy, and Jack is still as handsome and unobtainable as ever.

However, things look like they’re starting to change when Arlo finds himself sharing a room with Jack while on holiday in Amsterdam at Christmas. Will the festive spirit finally move them towards each other, or is Arlo just banging his head against a wall this time?

From bestselling author, Lily Morton comes a warm romantic comedy set in chilly Amsterdam.

This is the second book in the Wright Brothers series but it can be read as a standalone.

I really hoped we would be seeing Arlo and Jack's story. I am so happy to have read it. Arlo is just as adorable as Bee. I love that we got to see most of the gang, although I missed Ivy and Sal. I also love how each book took place in another country where you always feel like something amazing and out of the ordinary will happen. Spoil alert, this has the best proposal ever.

Goodreads said I read this book 4 years ago but I’m so glad I got to read it again and review it this time. Reading Lily Morton is always fun, her characters are always so full of life and hilarity. Arlo fits this characteristic perfectly. Seeing him and Jack get their HEA after having to deal with Steven is a sweet topping.

Lily Morton brings all the wit and charm she’s known for in her forced proximity romance, 'Merry Measure'.

Set at Christmas time, this novel centers on Arlo and Jack coming together while on holiday together with friends, so Tom, Arlo’s brother, can propose to his boyfriend. If you are looking for the “sights and sounds of the season” you aren’t really going to find them here. The holiday itself is more of a backdrop. But Amsterdam takes center stage and I was as enamored by the city as much as I was by the characters.

I very much enjoyed Arlo’s crush and his steadfast determination not to let it be known for the sake of his relationship with his brother. Oh, and the tiny fact that he doesn’t believe Jack, his brother’s bestie, will be interested in little ol’ clumsy him. However, it’s evident from the get go, that after many years of family friendship, Jack’s mission is to woo Arlo. And who wouldn’t be wooed by a man who goes to out of his way lengths to accompany you on holiday to ease your fear of flying?

When a room mix up results in the two bunking together it’s only a matter of time before their interests are known. But how do they keep their hookup from the others? And when Jack’s ex shows up, will he extinguish the flame before it even has a chance to fully spark?

Lily Morton draws on her native England to tell this tale; with references to television and movie most Americans may need to look up. This English banter, and the fact that these two men truly know each other, with Jack having spent years at Arlo’s house as Tom’s friend, is what makes this story so fun. It lends realism to Arlo and Jack’s journey: imperfections and the ability to relax with one another… bringing out one’s true self, make the best love stories. Not to mention, you can’t get more real than laughter during sexy times. Who hasn’t gotten an elbow to the head or fallen over their pants before?

Predominately told from Arlo’s point of view 'Merry Measure' is a friends to lovers passage with low angst, charm, romantic boat rides, memorable proposals (Tom’s) and an epilogue that is perfect and happy… and dare I say leaves room for more? Maybe from Jack’s point of view? If you enjoy 'Schitt’s Creek' this humorous little gem is for you!

I loved this one. I fell in love with Arlo in the first book and he didn’t even make an actual appearance so I was really excited to read his story with Jack. Impossibly cute. I love the way the city is described, makes me feel like I got to travel too. Jack is so swoony and romantic while also somehow being entirely practical. He’s a very well drawn character.

The characters tend to be two dimensional and the story is pretty light on plot. The humor is broad - think klutzy Jerry Lewis visits Amsterdam with a fellow he has a crush on. At a certain point the clumsiness gets unbelievable. There is very little plot. Two young men harbor hidden feelings for each other, they find out and do the wild thing, obnoxious ex shows up, he's told to go away, our heroes do more of the wild thing. That is it.

But, where the book shines, is the escapist trip to Amsterdam. It is like a little holiday in book form. I've had a mild interest in visiting Amsterdam before reading this book, but now it is high on my places to go list. She describes the city so beautifully, the book should be endorsed by the city's travel office as recommended reading. (Obviously only for those who are comfortable with reading blow by blow accounts of bedtime antics... but granted it's Amsterdam... visitors should be comfortable with that sort of thing). To the book's credit, the sex scenes always forward the emotional journey of the characters. It was a light read, but significant as I will now be going to Amsterdam as soon as this pandemic is over. Preferably at Christmas.

Arlo has to be the most witty of Lily's characters and helped to make this book very enjoyable. I found myself smiling, smirking and sometimes chuckling aloud due to Arlo's sarcasm. His relationship with Jack is lovely and I loved the side characters of Tom and Bee.
Lily really can't write a bad book and this is another little gem.

I rate most romance novels a 5 if they don't have bad grammar and angst and entertain me. But now I wish I could rate this higher than a 5. This book and Arlo made me laugh with delight several times and more importantly it made my heart smile all the way through.
