The story line was alright, I just couldn't get through it. Well written, the story line involving the characters either made me cry or fall asleep.

I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.

I personally had quite the ride reading this book. The descriptive scenes of mountain roads and paths caused a wash of vertigo! Excellent job. The story twists left, turns right & meanders along to its conclusion. The characters are definitely memorable and the dialogue is believable. Each life is altered in some way, except Rhona. She continues the same with no visible change.

The Mirror Shop is an intriguing book. While reading about the different mirrors and the reflections, I realized that when we are young, we see the now reflected; when older, we see the now, the past, and the future. We look forward or back without realizing the impact of the reflection.

I recommend this book to you. The writing is detailed, bringing the characters, scenes, and action to life. It is a book of love's mystery, comfort, fear, and discovery. Very well done.

Luke is a mirror shop owner who lives quietly in a small English countryside village. He leads a happy middle-age and tranquil life. He enjoys the companionship of Eva, who is a psychotherapist. But Luke Brewer has hit that age where mid-life crisis slams into him with a vengeance when an attractive young woman enters the shop and he falls teacup over kettle.

The prologue sets you up for a murder mystery. Then the book delves into background, introducing Eva, also a middle-aged professional happy with living in separate quarters while enjoying privileges with Luke. Luke is steady, reliable, reasonably intelligent, and relatively successful. He employs Russ, who is skilled at gilting and together they repair, restore, and sell a variety of mirrors.

The reader glimpses the life of Luke, his interests that include an "allotment," where he cultivates fresh vegetables exchanging knowledge and labor with the manager of the plot as well as Eva, their main shared interest.

Then enters Rhona and what happens to this man? His brains all go south! You KNOW Rhona is not going to be a good thing but it does no good to warn him-- he begins a slight distancing from Eva. Sometimes he feels a little guilty, but...he is putty. No, worse.

In the meantime, Eva has her sources, and the source may not have her best interests at heart, but Eva gets an earful. Rhona has a very full life of her own and is well developed so you know this is not a sincere woman. She has a track record; it isn't attractive. She's married to Alden and he is quietly desperate as well. Theirs is a marriage of convenience. Alden invites Luke to a unique event along with Russ, the latter of which can't refuse the anticipated excitement, and Luke the opportunity to get close to Rhona.

There are several twists and spikes to this well-crafted plot meant to build the tension and it does. The main characters are fleshed well enough you think you know them. Well, yes. And no.

The conclusion leaves you shaking your head in disbelief. Talk about a stunner!
So why a four star, not five? I felt the author prolongs the background information on the protagonist, which could easily have been a little shorter and left the same understanding wink. You have to hang in there to get the full flavor of this literary gut-twisting tale.

I received a request from Liesbeth of Amsterdam Publishing to consider a copy of her client's ebook and greatly appreciated the opportunity to read and review, which was given freely and no consideration was exchanged. Recommended for anyone who enjoys tight literary fiction, thrillers, mysteries, and middle-age dramas.

Like a bucolic walk through the English countryside, this book just roams and wanders. It is English, and being an American, perhaps some of the writing would appeal more to the British readers, I’m sure many of the references and customs were lost on me. I chose this book because it was classified as a mystery, thriller but the only mystery is in the stock description about how past history breaks through causing Luke to have no choice but murder.

For the first part of the book I had to force myself to continue. It did pick up a bit towards the middle, but not much.

This is the story of a married couple who use their wealth and charisma to entangle and seduce others to become their lovers so that they can torture each other or perhaps they just enjoy manipulating others. We follow the story of Luke, a mirror salesman and restorer, who is in a happy, long term relationship with his ex-therapist Eva. They have a wonderful relationship until he spies a beautiful younger woman named Rhona. She is the manipulator. Seducing him, perhaps even with the aid of her husband, as her new play toy. She lets him taste a life so different from his own that his own life appears mundane and tedious without her. He becomes putty in her hands, walking away from his life to follow her whims.

There were many times in the book when I wondered if it would take a darker twist. Was the torturous mountain path meant to lead Alden’s wife’s lover to his death? It was very obvious both Rhona and her husband were manipulating people for their pleasure, destroying the others simply for their own folly.

I did like the characters of Russ and Eva, both strong interesting people. I found Luke’s behavior bizarre. He just walks in and out of his shop anytime, leaving Russ to be the steady worker of the business.

I didn’t hate the book, but I did not enjoy it either. Not my cup of tea. I wanted to give it two stars at the beginning, or possibly one, but as I mentioned, I am not English and those who enjoy English romance may enjoy this much more than I. I also found many typos in the book, including one character who kept changing her name Cassie/Carrie.

I received an advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Enjoy!

A great read. A tale where the reader is drawn into a life where mans vulnerabilities and frailties, where the heart is concerned, is exploited by a new love. We are transported to the seemingly simple life of an antique mirror dealer who seems to be plodding along in life, happy with his day to day going ons with friends and long time girlfriend until a new women walks into his shop. He becomes transfixed and completely obsessed with her. The emotional roller coaster begins! Good luck putting this book down! A real treat of a read.

I enjoyed it enormously. The characters are very well drawn and written - even though I found Rhona completely irritating and annoying, I felt compelled to keep on reading-could not put it down. Russ, in the semi background, was quietly wise, discreet & loyal. I feel the plot would not have developed as well without him. All the characters & settings were beautifully described, almost tangible. Hope it won't be too long until his next book, can't wait.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Near-Fatal Attraction
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 5, 2018
The novel opens with its protagonist Luke Brewer, owner of the eponymous mirror shop, under arrest in Sicily, apparently for murder. How he got there is recounted in this accomplished and acutely observed story of infatuation and its impact on mild-mannered Luke and everyone close to him. All the characters are given full value as the story, deceptively slow moving at first, cranks into high gear, with long suppressed pain and discontent in all concerned bubbling to the surface, giving the narrative a strong emotional charge as it drives along. As Luke is drawn into the world of the beguiling Rhona and her raffish husband, his ordered life unravels - but is Rhona his nemesis, or the expediter of his destiny? There is a startling final twist to the compelling plot I didn't see coming, and I bet you won't. But you'll have to buy the book to find out.

Keeping the prologue in mind throughout kept up the suspense in this incredibly enjoyable novel. Antiques, intrigue, love affairs and am-dram, what more do you need.

I loved this book, it's very well written and quite challenging emotionally, I could identify with the characters and found myself wondering what was happening to them between the hours of putting it down and picking it up again. The twist at the end came out of the blue and I look forward to more books by Nicholas Bundock hopefully very soon!
