The Intrepid Miss Haydon Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 451 ratings

A Regency adventure set during the Napoleonic Wars! For fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Jane Aiken Hodge and Jane Austen.

An impetuous heroine uncovers a shocking secret…

England and France, 1803

Corinna Haydon, suspected of having developed a tendre for the notorious Fabian Grenville, is taken by her family to Paris, where it is hoped she will meet an eligible suitor.

With them is Sir Richard Beresford, her sister’s brother-in-law, who has known Corinna for years – and loved her in secret for most of that time.

When war breaks out with Napoleon, the group find themselves in great danger, and it is only Richard’s skill that enables them to escape with their lives.

Suddenly Corinna begins to look at Richard with different eyes. But the reappearance of Grenville throws a spanner in the works…

As tensions heighten between England and France, Corinna finds herself bound up in a web of intrigue, but which suitor will manage to capture her heart?

THE INTREPID MISS HAYDON is a classic historical saga by Alice Chetwynd Ley: a traditional British Regency romance, set in nineteenth-century England.

‘These vintage Regency romances hover somewhere between Jane Austen and the genre as we know it today. I really enjoy them.’ –

Intriguing characters! An Englishman paid to spy for Napoleon and the neighbors who foil his plan, no profanity and a clean read!

I enjoy Ms. Ley’s books but Miss Haydon was not my favorite heroine. By the end I was finished with her tossed curls, stamping feet and flaming temper. For a 20 year old in that time period she was oddly childish. Also made me wonder why the hero was so taken with her - he seemed very sensible. The dramatic events hinted at in the description also fell flat. As always, Ley writes well; this was just not my favorite.

This was a fun, light read. Reader beware, though. The summary on the back is misleading, and so is the title. Supposedly the story is all about the heroine and the soon-to-be hero (after he impresses her with his derring do, after she's taken him for granted most of her life as a friend of the family while going gooey over some fop) escaping Revolutionary France. But this adventure doesn't take place until quite a way through the book and then is so bland as to be anti-climactic. The real adventure takes place after they're in England dealing with smugglers and spies. Yet this too seems drawn out, watered down, and the romance gets lost along the way. Still, she's a writer that's easy to read and the characters are agreeable. Hence the three stars.

There were no other reviews and the description sounded interesting. I have a mixed history with Ley's books (a full range of reactions from loved to bored) but I was willing to give this a try. Unfortunately it was just OK in my opinion. A fairly full cast of characters are in Paris when war breaks out again and they must return to England. Their responses and actions change how they view each other and further a few romances. This should be exciting stuff but it seemed rather superficial instead.

Another great love story and adventure set during theNapoleonic wars. Sir Richard makes a wonderful hero and Corinna an exasperating heroine, while her brother Laurie is charmingly portrayed. The plot is exciting and the book unputdownable.
