About the author

My name is Hugh. I live in the city of Swansea, South Wales, in the United Kingdom.
I'm a passionate blogger and have been blogging since February 2014.
My blog covers a wide range of subjects, the most popular is my blogging tips. I've learned a lot about the world of blogging since I first discovered it. All of the tips and advice I give are free of charge and will cost you nothing apart from, maybe, a little bit of your time.
I have always enjoyed writing, and the fact that I suffer from a mild form of dyslexia has not stopped me from enjoying the passion I have for writing.
Now in my fifties, I thought it about time I let my writing become public. Becoming a blogger seemed to be the perfect way for me to do this. Blogging has put me in touch with hundreds of other writers, many of whom have been supportive and helped me with my writing.
I lead a happy life and always try to stay positive. I share my life with John, my wonderful civil partner, and our two Welsh Cardigan Corgis, Toby and Austin.
I write about life because I find it so fascinating. I have many stories to tell.
You will find some of my short stories and flash fiction on my blog, and I hope you enjoy reading them. Flash Fiction has become a big part of my writing, and I enjoy participating in various writing challenges.
My first collection of short stories is available on Amazon. Glimpses is available as both a paperback and an eBook and contain 28 short stories and flash fiction full of twists, turns, and unexpected endings. The Kindle version is 99p.
My second collection of short stories and flash fiction, More Glimpses, is also available on Amazon.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2019Flash fiction and short stories are some of my favorite late night reading. Having read the first book, “Glimpses,” I was thrilled to hear that Hugh Roberts had written a second collection.
What I found between these pages was a wealth of creative and imaginative stories. Roberts is known for his witty endings and his ability to take a mundane event and turn it into something totally unexpected. Some of his stories have a Twilight Zone quality to them that are sure to WOW! Just to be safe, don’t turn out the lights.
A few of my favorites were “The Whistle,” a frightening glance back into time and set in the trenches of WWI. This one tugged at my heart!
“Murder in Evershot,” reads like a Miss Marple suspense from the BBC. The author actually casts himself and family into the plot. Brilliant!
My favorite story was “Fairies at the Bottom of the Garden” (of course). This was the story of Roger, a homophobe who despised his brother in law simply because he was gay. However, the fairies at the bottom of the garden have a surprise in store for Roger. Just goes to show that you should never piss-off the fairies! Never!!
This collection of short stories is the perfect weekend read! Grab your copy today!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2019Hugh Roberts never disappoints with his uncanny ability to take a simple life event and twist it into a life-altering situation, keeping us glued till the very end. It's always a struggle to figure out where this author will lead us with his often dark trysts into another dimension. Like in true Roberts fashion, More Glimpses takes us into the lives of some interesting characters - many of whom don't always have good intentions.
A few stories which stick in my mind: The Whistle - when love succumbs to war, what happens when time travelers' plans get bungled up in The Bag Lady, Murder in Evershot brings us the life-like game of Clue mixed with a bit of Miss Marple and a good warning about letting strangers know where you live, you may never look at carrot cake the same way again after reading Easter Bunny Cake. And one of my favorites - The Jump - burning love at both ends of the candle can be a biatch and Karma comes in for just desserts.
This book of short stories offers a wide array of genres to entertain, sometimes frighten, and make you think. You may need to leave the lights on when reading!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2019Hugh Roberts has produced another collection of unusual and interesting short stories which inspire a variety of reactions from amusement to disbelief to horror. The author depicts the thoughts, motivations and reactions of his characters to their varying circumstances in an accurate and thought provoking way. He likens his book to The Twilight Zone and as I read each story I though this comparison was very apt as there is a creepy eeriness about the stories that makes you feel as if the characters might have wandered into a parallel universe where everything looks the same but isn't.
My two favourite stories in the collection are as follows:
The Whistle is a story set in the trenches in France during World War 1. A group of soldiers are sitting waiting for the whistle to blow. When it does, they will crawl out of the trenches and hurl themselves into the line of fire resulting in an almost certain death. One soldier reflects on his life as he waits, knowing this is likely to be the end. His thoughts revolve around the important relationships and loves of his life. When the whistle blows he launches himself into the fray and we discover some interesting aspects to his character and life. The authors descriptions of the horror of waiting in the cold and mud of the trenches as well as the psychology of war are deeply disturbing.
Murder in Evershot is a story about how an inquisitive and perceptive person can be manipulated down an incorrect path and end up missing the obvious. The main character and his partner and two dogs arrive in a small English town for a 5-day break. The town is strongly reminiscent of the movie set for the television series about Agatha Christie's famous character, Miss Marple. A series of strange events start to unfold and the hero becomes more and more convinced that he is in the middle of a murder mystery. When he investigates certain leads, the evidence seems to point to a certain conclusion and he even comes across a Miss Marple look alike although she adamantly refuses to have any similarities to Miss Marple. The story has an expected ending which is most satisfying.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2019What an eclectic collection of short stories! There's something for everyone - horror, comedy, science fiction, mystery, paranormal. Some are a scant few paragraphs, while others span several pages. My reactions to these stories ran the gamut - laughter, shock, sadness, surprise. The author has quite an imagination, and uses human nature and tendencies and our dependence on modern technology in clever ways.
All are a delight to read, but some that stuck with me are The Tunnel - such an unexpected ending, and I laughed out loud; Floral Hall - so sweet and melancholy; The Right Choice - words can have different, and sometimes very literal, meanings; The Hole - karma occasionally delivers in the most divine ways; and Easter Bunny Cake - I'll never look at carrot cake the same way again.
Whatever your preferred genre, you'll find it in this compilation of chilling, humorous, and unpredictable tales.
I received a copy of this novel from the author through Rosie's Book Review Team.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original glimpses
After having enjoyed Hugh's first book GLIMPSES I had to get the new book "More Glimpses" and I'm glad to report that I really enjoyed it.
It's another great varied selection of original ideas, thoughtful scenarios, odd characters put into short stories; wonderfully weird and often scary.
This selection seemed to be a little darker than the last one and it included more fantasy and horror leanings with even some ideas on science fiction and time travel. The title is very apt as we get very short glimpses into all types of lives and scenarios:
From decisions at the door or in TV shows that can be life altering, to romance on the battlefield; from birth to death - Roberts writes with humour, originality, compassion and heart-felt deeper understanding of human nature.
There are 32 stories, so it's difficult to sum this up any further. All I can say is they will be worth your time, make you smile, frown and entertain. Roberts is a writer to put on your radar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go get this book!
More Glimpses... even better than Glimpses!
I absolutely loved reading Hugh's first collection of short stories and was eagerly awaiting this new collection, and it really did NOT disappoint!
What was wonderful was that all the stories were new, and I hadn't read them before on his blog, which meant plenty of new gems that were unearthed!
Baby Talk was a favourite of my daughters.
There are plenty with sinister twists, and in order to create such suspense in a few pages, you have to be a pretty good wordsmith, which Hugh has firmly shown he is!
Easter Bunny Carrot Cake is a short and sweet one, but the romantic in me really loved Floral Hall, even though it is listed as a paranormal story!
Murder in Evershot is another great read...
In fact, they all are.
What are you still reading this for? Go, get the book!
