Filling the Afterlife from the Underworld: Murder in the First: Case files from the Raven Siren (Nicolette Mace: the Raven Siren Book 11) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

The bickering trio are back in this latest Raven Siren Case File Special! It's a family affair as Fred and Harry come to Siren on bended knee to investigate a case that neither of them can get close to. Ryan Barlow, Fred's brother and only living relative is in trouble, the kind of trouble that will end up with him in prison or dead, unless Siren can do something to help.

Sonya Lesner, a woman of some dubious reputation has been found murdered and Ryan is the prime suspect. Not only that, but the crime scene has been staged to send a message to one of the trio and Siren is certain that she has heard the name, Sonya Lesner, before. Of all the cases Siren has taken, there has never been more at stake as she digs into the past to try and find some answers.

Nicolette Mace is a private investigator out of necessity, not choice. With her family dead and nowhere else to turn she had to learn to stand on her own two feet and live the only way her father ever taught her to.

Life as a private investigator isn't all big cases, excitement and arch enemies. Filling the Afterlife from the Underworld follows the day to day musings and activities of Nicolette Mace: The Raven Siren, taken from her online blog.

"My name is Nicolette Mace, but you might know me as the Raven Siren. I'm a Private Investigator living the 1930s romantic dream in this new and exciting modern age. I keep records of everything that happens; everything I have seen and done. Why? There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamed of in your philosophies."

    good read
  • Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2016
Crime is not my thing, I feel as if the literary world, TV and the film industry is over-run with the same old, regurgitated stories. So I generally do not read crime novels, as I am more often than not, let down.
This however is an absolute triumph! The main character Raven is sassy and smart-mouthed and I loved her. The author’s creation of this crime-noir persona and those around her is astounding. The story is engaging and had me gripped from start to finish. There are books that are so easy to read it’s like breathing the story in, this is one of those books! Before I knew it I was at the end and absolutely gutted that I was, thankfully it’s a series. Hurrah!
I was also excited to discover that the author writes epic fantasy novels, which is my usual genre to read and so I think my bank balance will be taking a hit over the next few months but I’ll be a happy little, bookworm.
I have heard rumblings that this might be made into an Amazon TV show, I really hope that’s true!
    On to book 2.

Although the scenario was predictable there were some surprises. The atypical female private detective, the story's narrator, and the comical interaction between her and her two police contacts held my interest and made this short story enjoyable.

A thoroughly enjoyable Novelette. I devoured it in one day which wasn’t hard. This is a new author to me and I really like C.S Wooley’s style. I liked the humour and the asides that she used throughout. The narrative flowed easily and the storyline was good. I wasn’t left with the feeling that it was unfinished although It paved the way for the next story at the same time. The protagonist was likeable.

As one of the other reviewers has said, one of my favourite things about Woolley's works are that they are so effortless to read. They are the perfect books for when you want to unwind with a good, well told and well written story.
One of the marks of a great writer in my opinion is the ability to take well worn story beats and plots and invigorate them with new life. Woolley is exceptionally gifted at this. Whilst the story unfolds in a familiar fashion it is totally fresh and engaging, that's not an easy thing to pull off! This book does it perfectly.
    Can't wait to read more!
