Your New Dog: a beginner's guide to dog adoption Kindle Edition
The old adage “a dog is a man’s best friend” delivers a profound truth in the simplest of terms. A good dog exhibits many of the traits we’d like to foster within others and ourselves: loyalty, forgiveness, gentleness and so many more. Who is the first to greet you at the door at the end of a long, tiring workday? Of course, it’s your faithful canine. No other will ever welcome you with such enthusiasm and excitement for simply showing up. A dog is the source of great joy and enduring love, but also comes with a great deal of responsibility and care.
Your New Dog is a guide designed to take the guesswork out of finding your perfect furry companion. Breeds are many, some better with children, while others need wide open spaces to run and be free. Writer Jean Chu, a passionate dog owner in her own right, has painstakingly addressed every concern you can imagine in this informative guide. If you’ve owned a pet before, you know the work involved in grooming, walking, training, nurturing and on and on. It is nearly a fulltime job, but one with the richest of rewards.
All of the above is meaningful and true, but when adopting, especially a rescued dog, the challenges are even greater. However, the emotional recompense far outweighs any sacrifice you, as the owner, may put forth. Jean knows and understands the fine details of adopting a dog. She owns a special therapy dog, Max, who has been extensively trained to provide comfort and acceptance to children with disabilities.
Dog ownership is absolutely one of the most fulfilling, rewarding endeavors any person could undertake. There is a special union that exists between dog and man, one that Jean Chu can explain like no other.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2015Your New Dog is a snappy guide to read, and I recommend it for anyone considering a new companion.
This guide was gifted to me, and I've been considering getting a puppy for a while now. When I say considering I mean the idea has been in the back of my mind. In all honesty I needed this book.
The book sparked me to truly think about such an easy decision (aside from parting with the money, buying a dog can be as easy as spotting a puppy in a pet shop window, and the book covers that topic too).
In all this book has been very useful to me and I highly recommend it to others, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2015Wow! What a great and insightful read about adopting a dog! I have always been a pet lover. After my cat passed away, I’ve been debating to get a cat or a dog even though I’ve never had a dog before. This book detailed every single aspect of what to expect to own a dog - the joy, the love, the responsibilities … It is certainly beyond (what I thought of) just spending times walking the dog every day. This is a serious read for anyone who is seriously considering owning a dog. Must read this before you make a serious decision.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2015More of a booklet than a book and nothing you couldn't learn from reading free resources online.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2015Your New Dog is a good guide designed to take the guesswork out of finding your dog companion. I bought this book because it was recommended by a friend. Has some good pointers, especially for people who are just bringing a newly rescued animal into their home or for people who haven't previously owned or fostered a dog. It's a short book but contains good information from a personal perspective that can definitely be helpful.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2015Full of excellent advice. I would recommend this book to anyone adopting a dog, has newly adopted a dog. Author clearly knows what she's writing about and the owner of an adopted dog with years of experience. Wonderful and concise writing that blends both heartfelt writing with practical information gleaned from an author who is obviously well-versed in what she writes about.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2015Bottom line, read the book if you are thinking about adopting a furry family member. Quick and easy read but very informative. Many people don't know all there is to having a new dog, make an informed decision by reading this book before hand.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2015Two paws up! What a great read. On one hand Jean has captured what you already (should) know; and gently remind you again in case you're forgotten. More importantly, she has done a terrific job of capturing all of the things you really need to think about and consider that you might not factor into your decision. Things that could be make or break issues for a successful adoption. I'm not a dog, but if I was one - and I was up for adoption, I'd really want my new human to have read this before we "seal the deal". Well done Jean. Well done indeed. Woof Woof. (tail wagging)
