The Night of The Mosquito: A gripping serial-killer thriller Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars 243 ratings

A mutinous past. A monstrous escape. A mind on the brink.

1987: In the dead of night, two children flee a brutal orphanage. Only one survives. Decades later, Timothy Salter lives in silence and squalor, haunted by the sister he lost and the secrets buried with her.

2014: Deep in the English countryside, a notorious inmate with a taste for flesh escapes from a secure psychiatric hospital during a mysterious solar flare. Wolfe is more than a killer—he believes he's the heir to Jack the Ripper’s legacy, and he’s not finished yet.

As chaos spreads through Copse Hall, an institution hiding unethical experiments and buried guilt, psychiatrist Dr. George Kotlas is forced into a deadly game of survival. Meanwhile, the discovery of a forgotten manuscript hints at psychic phenomena and a dark intelligence manipulating events from the shadows.

When past trauma collides with present terror, and science meets the supernatural, the line between madness and evil begins to blur.

Terrifying, intelligent, and disturbingly plausible, The Night of the Mosquito is a relentless psychological thriller about trauma, power, and the monsters we create—inside institutions, and inside ourselves.

What readers are saying about The Night of the Mosquito:

“Reads as if it were written by a highly agitated, very pent-up Stephen King, in a dark, foul mood.” USA Kindle reviewer.
“Where has this author been?? He's up there with Stephen King, James Patterson, Patricia Cornwell and the rest. You will not be disappointed by these books and characters.”
UK Kindle reviewer
“A fast-paced thrill ride with the scariest character in a long time! Max China weaves together an escaped lunatic, a traumatised young man, and a town having trouble coming to grips with the aftermath of a natural phenomenon. This is a thriller in every sense.”

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

In keeping with most of mybooks, The Night of the Mosquito is a multi-genre novel which, while it doeswhat it says on the 'tin', is about much more than a serial killer, or theapocalyptic event that forms the backdrop to the story.
It's abook about trauma and violence, unfulfilled potential, sadness, and life-longguilt, the kindness of strangers, retribution and finally resolution. There's even a little romance. In short,it's a roller-coaster ride filled with thrills and spills..

I hope you enjoy it.

WHERE CRIME MEETS THE SUPERNATURAL—AND THE PAST NEVER STAYS BURIED.

Max China is a British author of dark, genre-blurring fiction that blends psychological suspense, crime, and the supernatural. His debut novel, The Sister, opened to mixed but mostly favourable reviews and was praised for its haunting atmosphere and taut narrative.

In 2014, Max was named one of The Top 50 Best Crime Writers to Watch, alongside Lee Child and Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling). Known for his chilling villains and layered plots, he writes thrillers that explore morality, trauma, and the lasting grip of the past.

Titles like The Night of the Mosquito and The Crane Wife showcase his gift for immersive, unsettling storytelling that keeps readers hooked until the final page.

Based in the UK, Max draws inspiration from the British countryside and is currently working on his next novel.

I've read all of Max China's books and loved them, but I was absolutely riveted by this one. I finished in record time because I simply could not put it down. I love the author's writing style and the pacing was great. He introduced all these compelling threads and wove them together and took me right along to the end. He is a master at creating believable and horrifying psychotic monsters. Much of the book is quite horrific but it does end on an uplifting note. The author is quite knowledgeable on police procedure and scientific methods. I found it all quite believable and I think that is what made is so frightening. It seemed so real ... so possible. I highly recommend all books by this writer but this one is, by far, my favorite.

Fast-paced book with a complex story line spanning a quarter century combining themes of cannibalism, serial killers, patients with paranormal abilities and a dystopian future all rolled into one. Clearly not for those of weak constitution given the graphic violence and carnal situations present, but certainly gets the heart pumping were scary thrillers your kind of read. One I'll definitely be thinking about long after the lights go out!

I have read all his books. This one wasn't my favorate, however, it was true Max China style and prose. If you haven't read his other books-starting with The Sister-I wouldn't recommend starting with this book. His, sometimes disjointed, style takes some getting "the hang of."

You won't be disappointed by this book, but, I don't know if it gives you a true sense of his abilities.

I love a good thriller especially when there's a maniacal serial killer involved. This book looked like it might be just my thing. I found myself more disappointed with each page I read.

The book starts strong but quickly falls apart. The characters are shallow and one dimensional which makes it hard to follow. There are some truly bizarre scenes that don't add to the story and seem to be included only to allow the author to, once again, talk about the size of the villain's penis.

In summary: this book is shallow, tedious, and not worth reading.

This really was a top read. Nonstop action, except Max China doesn’t shy away from touchy subjects. The words ‘nonstop action’ normally means lots of guns and shooting and a hero who takes on the bad guys with plenty of fearlessness and valour. Not in Mosquito. We’ve got a huge escaped cannibal who gets off on eating people while they’re alive, a riot in a lunatic asylum, psychotic nutcases who seem to feel no pain fighting each other to the death, a mute who witnessed his sister run over by a train, psychologists trained in kung fu and I don’t know what else.

I don’t want to say too much because I’m in danger of putting spoilers in here but this book will keep you awake at night.

A poignant start leads into a gripping story. Amid the chaos of an unexpected Coronal Mass Emission that knocks out cummications, a psychotic killer escapes his guards and goes on the rampage. While the police try to deal with the panic and looting that goes on in a town, a solitary figure, weighed down with remorse, wanders in the countryside surrounding a small village. Lots of threads running through the story are gradually tied, and a most unlikely hero emerges.
