No Place For Secrets (Fred Vickery Mysteries Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 31 ratings

The first book in the popular Fred Vickery mystery series.

Cutler, Colorado is the kind of town where everybody knows his neighbors and nobody locks their doors. There's always time to chat with a neighbor or enjoy a cup of coffee with a friend, and there's nothing like watching the sunset over Spirit Lake.

But looks can be deceiving.

Fred Vickery is a man of a certain age. A minor heart incident now has his old friend Doc Huggins warning him to avoid cholesterol, salt, and caffeine. He wants Fred to rest and avoid excitement.

Fred's doing his best to cooperate--at least that's what his overly concerned daughter believes. But cutting down on sodium is a whole lot easier than avoiding excitement, especially when Fred discovers a dead body while on his morning walk. The victim was new in town (she'd only been in Cutler ten years) but Fred has lived here forever. He knows everyone and he knows exactly what questions to ask. Doc's orders be damned...

Fred is out for his morning walk when he finds the body of Joan Cavanaugh floating face down in the lake. This is just the kind of excitement that his doctor told him to stay away from. The sheriff is determined to call it a suicide, so Fred worms his way into the investigation, getting the woman's long lost sister involved against her will. But the more he and Kate investigate, the more questions they seem to have. Can they uncover the secret that got Joan murdered?

The idea of an elderly sleuth appealed to me, and I was quick to grab this book. I wasn't disappointed. Fred is a charming character. I especially loved the way he was able to talk people into doing what he wanted sometimes. And you can't help be feel sorry for him whenever everyone gangs up on his health. Kate was an interesting character as well full of so many contradictions you couldn't figure her out. The plot itself is great as well. While I saw a few of the twists coming, there were still plenty of surprises for me and I couldn't wait to reach the suspenseful end.

Sadly this series is out of print. Don't let it stop you from meeting a charming character. I'll be hunting down the rest of this great series so I can see what happens next to Fred.

I enjoyed the main character. I could visualize him the entire time and I really enjoyed how irritable he seemed at times. It made me chuckle. I've read other books by this author (as Jacklyn Brady) and thoroughly enjoyed them. I'm excited to try book 2 in this series. The storyline for this book entertained me and kept my attention. I'm expecting similar thoughts with book 2. This was a nice read for a "vacation"- not too much "overthinking required"- just a nice mystery.

I read the book when it was first published. Loved the series then and it was fun to read it again after all these years. Hope to see what " Fred" gets mixed up in the next book! Delightful read.

I loved it and can't wait to read more Fred Vickery Mysteries!

It's been a while since I picked up a cozy where one of the themes running thru the book wasn't baked goods or some kind of sweets.
Those are fun but how refreshing to be carried along by a good old fashioned, intelligent mystery! I also liked the way the author described the town set in the mountains and pines, sigh, the sights and sounds of nature. I'm going to have a hard time waiting for the next book in the series to be put on kindle. Hopefully, they will be "cozy" like this one...and also $2.99!

I really enjoyed this series except for the fact that proofreading hasn’t been done. There were times I struggled to figure out what the sentence was and or meant.

This was not good. It had a good storyline, but it was badly written - a sort of cross between an American police procedural and a cozy - which might have come off if well written. Sorry. Cannot recommend.
