Numb - A Disturbing Psychological Thriller (Numb Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
Calvin Court is a massage therapist with a few dark secrets: He battles depression. He medicates with too much booze. And he's got a serious thing for one of his clients.
The client claims the feeling is mutual... until she frames Calvin for murder and blackmails him.
What does the client want? Not much. Calvin just has to be her new "star" in an underground industry catering to the very rich and oh-so-very depraved.
Maybe he was just better off at the bar.
From Jeff Menapace, bestselling author of the Wildlife and Bad Games series, comes Numb, a dark and disturbing thriller with tongue firmly planted in cheek...until it's ripped out.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2021I'm not a writer, but upon finishing this book am suddenly inspired to try with this review.
As humans, there are deliberate actions we choose to make, things we do automatically without thinking, and then we also have those involuntary, biological functions like breathing, a heartbeat. One might file reactions there in the middle.
The moment that I'd read the last word of this story, I became acutely aware and completely focused on the sensation of the corners of my mouth, ever so slowly, being pulled up into a grin that I had absolutely no control over. I was bizarrely fascinated by it as it was happening.
It seemed that the triggered receptor belonged to my brain and I was allowed to share the experience. Does that make my reaction an involuntary action? Not equal to breathing, no, but our brain has evolved to make entertainment essential to the quality of (it's) life.
My brain says read the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2025So…I read the Cliche books 1-3 first, not realizing that Numb came first. Oh well…Numb was every bit as disturbing, Calvin’s back story. Angela is really a piece of work! Evil for sure. If you like horror and manipulation this series is for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2014I think I discovered Jeff Menapace through Bookbub. I remember thinking the book Bad Games would probably suck because it was priced so low. I could not have been more wrong! It had me hooked from the beginning and I've read everything he's written now. I thought the Bad Games series was bad ass, but this book is even better! I bought it the second it came out and finished it in 24 hours. The main character, Calvin, is cynical and sarcastic, yet somehow still likeable. I don't want to give any spoilers. It drives me nuts when people do that, so I'm just going to say this...If you are looking for a thriller, something to get your heart racing, read this book!! It has plenty of action for guys yet Jeff managed to make it relatable to women. Good job! I seriously can't wait for the next book. Now, I need to go take a nap. I stayed up until 4:00am finishing this one. ;)
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2014Jeff's "Bad Games" book 1 was one of the best books I ever read in this genre. Although they were well written, book 2 and 3 departed from my idea of how I wanted to see the series go.
When I received an email update that "Hair of the Bitch" was going to come out, I was excited to see what Jeff did with a new story line.
I kind of feel that my disappointment for the "Bad Games" series was summed up in this one book.
"Hair of the Bitch" starts strong. A dysfunctional character that I could relate to. A situation that, while fictional, was not too far fetched that I couldn't imagine it actually happening. But somewhere down the line, the story just fell flat. Perhaps it was predictable...perhaps it was that one minute the main character was bold and had the courage to stand up for himself, but the next minute was being walked all over....
The best parts of the book (and really the only parts I really cared about) were the shark scene and basically any scene where Calvin was fighting someone or something.
I rate a great book by how likely I would be to read a sequel.... In this case... I wouldn't unless I was able to borrow it for free from Amazon.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2016This book is signature Menapace. It wasn't so much a thriller, as a thriller saga. This thriller is very drawn out both for shock and good writing purposes. This book as with many of Menapace's writings is a page turner that will have you at the edge of your seat, being brain screwed, and wondering why you're sending yourself through such torture. Suspense is high, and while there is gore, it doesn't singularly carry the novel. This novel has a seedy premise, though, and remains seedy throughout.
The only literary complaint may be of character motives, but people are sketchy things and act out of a variety of reasons. Nevertheless, I found it highly realistic throughout. That said, if you enjoy suspenseful, mind twisting, thrillers and can go along for the ride this book is definitely for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2024This book draws you in, you pull away and it draws you back. The ending … pure!
Angela uses Calvin for her own needs. He wants to feel something for the perfect woman and he does, but he doesn’t trust her, can he?
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2023Normally not wanting to take the time for this review sort of thing, I simply have to recommend this book to everyone who loves this genre. Very much looking forward to the next two in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2021This was the second of Jeff Menapace's novels I've read, and so far he has managed to hook my interest with each story and hold it until the end.
The main character, Calvin, is a depressed and lonely young man who gets tangled in a very nefarious underworld of wealthy people's dark desires being carried out in real life. This story had the feel of the horror movies Hostel and Saw, but a different structure and setting.
I did enjoy this book and finished it in only three days, it has all the violence and sex you could expect out of a dark thriller. But make no mistake about it, this story is as realistic and believable as either of the aforementioned movies. This will certainly appeal to horror fans and those who want a fast thriller but it still could have used more subtlety and maybe another thirty or so pages to flesh it out.
3.5/5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I love Jeff Menapace's books. Always a great read with an edge of your seat suspense. This book surely doesn't disappoint although not a big fan of cliffhangers. Worth the read though.

1.0 out of 5 stars Had to give one star
Cherchez la femme - ever heard of that notion, Mr. Author?
Obviously not.
Waste of reading space.
Gruesome brutality instead of an intelligent plot.
Thanks for nothing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously twisted
Let’s hope we never ever meet Angela, or Calvin for that matter after all he does the dirty sick deeds Angela asks of him, he’s just the puppet. Jeff Menapace story’s are definitely not for the faint hearted. His imagination is seriously twisted. A creepy read into the mind and life of Calvin. Maybe I’m sick, I did like the story, but I don’t think I could watch it if it was a movie. Recommended reading for all psychology thriller fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it
