Natural Twenty: Roll for Love, Book 1 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 909 ratings

Plants are easier than people - that’s Leo’s rule of thumb. After all, nobody really wants a man who looks like he belongs in a biker gang but would rather spend his time buried in books and flowers. It’s just easier to be single. Until he meets the owner of the new book shop.

Jacob Morris knows two things: He’s really attracted to the man who runs the local flower shop, and he doesn’t date. Not when he’s still healing from a bad breakup, has a new business to run, game nights to organize, workshops to host, and a website to build.

When friendship blooms into something more, Leo and Jay must decide whether to roll the dice and take a chance on love or keep forging ahead on their quests alone. Will their roll yield a one or a perfect, natural 20?

Natural Twenty is an 80,000-word contemporary-MM romance featuring Dungeons & Dragons, secret flower language bouquets, a spoiled Staffy (or two), and a best friend who is basically a gothic prince. It is book one in the Roll for Love series and can be enjoyed as a stand-alone.

Natural Twenty made me want to buy a bouquet of flowers and join a Dungeons and Dragons group as soon as I finished the book. I have never played a Dungeons and Dragons game in my life, but I really want to change that after reading this book. This was such a fabulous, sweet book about a stoic florist and a gregarious bookshop owner. This romance had it all: humor, cuteness, awkward flirting, supportive best friends, adorable dogs, flowers, games, and fandom. I thought all the characters were wonderfully developed and were full of depth and feeling. The writing was well done and flowed smoothly which made the entire book a joy to read.

The audiobook was narrated by Joel Leslie who did an incredible job. The characters were perfectly voiced and I could feel the emotion and energy, but the performance never became over-the-top – it was just right. I found listening to this book enjoyable which was enhanced by the well done audiobook production.

Performance 5 out of 5 stars
Story 4 out of 5 stars

    An endearing story!
Natural Twenty was a very sweet story, made even better by the narration of Joel Leslie! There was a lot of internal dialogue, which, if I was reading instead of listening, would have probably taken me out of the story a little. But thanks to the wonderful Joel Leslie, I didn't mind it so much! I'd listen to him read a phone book if it came down to it.
Leo and Jay were so cute together. That's what really stood out to me about this story- just how sweet and cute the whole thing was. It's a very light-hearted read, with just a tiny touch of angst, that thankfully didn't play out too long.
Both Jay and Leo wanted to take things slow, but things actually moved at a pretty quick pace between them. It wasn't quite insta-love, but it was close. Although I didn't mind because they were so good together, so good for each other.
The secondary characters were great, especially Edward.
I loved the epilogue! It was exactly what an epilogue should be, it even made me tear up! Although it did give away Edward's story to an extent, I'm still looking forward to reading his book.

I loved the small town feel, how it seemed like such a wonderful place to live.
I've read so many books this month that take place in small towns, with a bookstore as a main focus, I think they're all trying to tell me something...

Natural Twenty was such a lovely read. I loved the flower shop and the bookstore. I loved the snippets of the dnd game that we got, and the cute doggy, and of course, all the geekyness! It just made my heart happy.

I really liked how Jay and Leo started off as friends and build a relationship off of that foundation. They may have had some communication issues, but I loved them together. I also loved the queer-platonic relationship that Jay and Edward had. And the fact that they were tumblr besties first just made it so much better!I also really loved all the representation that this book had! It was all just so casual and smooth and it was fantastic.

Did I mention that I loved Jay’s bookshop? Because I really do love it and I wanted to spend hours browsing in it. I hope we get to see more of it (and the flower shop) in future books. I think I fell head over heels for this book and I don’t know what to do with myself now. I can’t wait to read more! This was a lovely read and I’m giving it five stars.

Wasn’t sure how to rate this. It was enjoyable and I liked the MCs, but after reading some other reviews I have to agree with some of the negatives. I’ve read books with similar characters and towns that were a bit more developed. The author tries hard to create conflict late in the book, but it’s pretty weak. The characters essentially meet, are attracted to each other, start dating, the end. Their e tire interaction is visit each other’s shops, playing D&D, reading fantasy novels, and watching an 80s sitcom together.

They each have one other friend and there’s a sweet dog. A lot of talk, not enough action or development. For instance, the author makes a big deal about the characters piercings and tattoos, such a big deal at the beginning that I assumed once the characters disrobed we’d get a lot of detailed tattoo porn, but they’re barely mentioned again. The characters wonder how many tattoos the other has - how much of their bodies are covered - I still don’t know. We are told that Leo’s tattoos are all flowers and vines that form sleeves but that’s the extent of the description.

Jay’s friend Edward is a super interesting character and I want to read his book. I hate, though, that the author chooses to tell us about Edwards’s HEA in the Epilogue is this book. I mean, it’s not surprising, but still annoying to get that spoiler. I really dislike when authors deep dive in to super nerdy niche hobbies. It really draws you out of the story when you have no idea what they’re talking about. This book does that with Dungeons & Dragons, but it was actually pretty well done here. It was more sweet than annoying. Edwards’s book will be like that with cosplay and steampunk, but the author did a decent job of describing his costumes so hopefully it will be okay too.

If you want a super low angst, nerdy, easy read with sweet characters that are entirely on the same page the entire time, then this is for you.

This is a wonderful story. I laughed and cried. Jay and Leo are fabulous characters who both deserve someone wonderful in their lives. I had a good time reading this book and I can't wait for Edward's story.
The book starts off at a moderate speed, but then things pick up and you don't want to put it down. I liked the humor, geekiness, love, and even stress that appear in the story. Leo's love language is adorable and it is super cute once Jay finally figures it out.

This was exactly the kind of sweet romance I was looking for. Grumpy, tattooed florist meets geeky new bookseller. There's dogs. The spice is spicy. The friends are wholesome. The 3rd act complication is reasonable and resolved by-- wait for it-- communication! It's a cute, healthy relationship and I'm shamelessly continuing on to book 2 now.

4.5-5 this one is just a sweet low angst love story about 2 guys that own shops on the same street - the florist and the book shop owner, the perfect recipe right?!
I love the dynamic and banter between these two. It’s a story of right place, slightly wrong time but when you one it’s the one you find a way. I devoured it.
Another great book from Charlie Novak - great plot, great characters, great side characters too!, and fab spice. Can’t wait to read the rest of this series.
