Coming out is hard enough on its own, but if you have a crush on your best buddy, things get really complicated.

Best friends since kindergarten, best friends forever. That was the plan. High school sophomores Tim and Tom know everything there is to know about each other … or at least they should, but Tim has a secret that could change everything he doesn’t want to see changed.

Tim is gay and almost ready to be out and proud. Tom is already proud—a proud homophobe, that is. As if the stakes were not high enough already, things get even more complicated when Tom talks his friend into double-dating a pair of girls. But sometimes unwanted challenges offer unexpected opportunities, and after the most embarrassing night of his life, Tim knows he can no longer avoid the inevitable. The question is, how will his best friend take it?

From the author of

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Marcus Herzig, future bestselling author and professional cynic, was born in 1970 and studied Law, English, Educational Science, and Physics, albeit none of them with any tenacity or ambition. After dropping out of university he held various positions in banking, utilities, and Big Oil that bore no responsibility or decision-making power whatsoever.

Always destined to be a demiurge, he has been inventing characters and telling stories since the age of five. His favorite genre, both as a reader and a writer, is Young Adult literature, but he also very much enjoys science- and literary fiction.

Marcus, who finds it very peculiar to talk about himself in the third person, prefers sunsets over sunrises, white wine over red, beer over wine, pizza over pasta, and humanity over humans. His favorite person is his future husband. Their favorite place is the beach.

Tough, Inspiring
Being gay can still be difficult as I should know, and this book really best describes how that can be especially for younger people. It’s a tough but inspiring story. I recommend for sure.

I have to go back and find that quote because I don’t remember it word for word, but Tim understood it clearly after his and Tom’s fractured friendship. And the quote definitely gives the title of this book a true meaning.

Each of the characters in this book revealed something of themselves in this novel. Tim was someone I saw in me. Tom would definitely be someone that I could easily be heads over heals for but probably dislike at the same time.

Inka is a good friend that most gay guys would want in their corner as a friend. The funny part for me personally in this story is Tim’s dad, I wish he wasn’t married to Tim’s mom. I would definitely flirt and date him.

    Marcus is a wonderful author!

Tim, a sophomore in high school, has been best friends with Tom since they were four years old. One day, Tom and Tim go to the movies and start talking with two girls, Maia and Inka. Eventually, Tom and Maia become romantically involved, and Tim becomes jealous. This strain in Tim and Tom's relationship causes the majority of the conflict in the book.

Marcus Herzig is such an excellent writer. His words were so incredibly beautiful. I felt completely immersed in his writing throughout the entirety of the book. Herzig can keep the reader engaged using his flowing, dynamic paragraphs that add so much dimension to the novel.

With that said, I consistently felt that there was no way Tim was a sophomore in high school. His vocabulary was impeccable, and he used so many words that are way out of the realm for a 16-year-old boy. His vocabulary felt more like a 22-year-old English major's. Although Tim's actions reflected a 16-year-old, that was about it. I felt that Herzig added weird pop culture references that seemed unnatural in the context of the story to make Tim seem like a 16-year-old. For example, he referenced new Netflix shows and popular dance moves like flossing at awkward times that did not add to the plot or make much sense.

Additionally, I felt that Tim and Tom's relationship was not very genuine. I understand the premise of this book is the slow demise of their friendship; I couldn't help but feel they were hardly friends in the first place. Their relationship always felt forced and unnatural.

Overall, this was a good book, and I felt connected to the characters and events in the book. Marcus Herzig's writing is stunning, and it kept me engaged in the book. He told a beautiful story that tugged at my heartstrings, and I appreciated his strong, powerful words. This book showed a solid and emotional story, and I would recommend it!

I ended up bawling my eyes out after I finished reading this. I kept waiting for Tom to come to his senses and then I realized I just hit the last page of the book and it wasn't going to happen and I just broke down. I couldn't figure out why. It's because the same thing happened to me. When I told my best friend I was bisexual our story played out the same, she cut me off and did and said horrible things. As I was reading I just kept saying to myself, they'll be friends again, he'll come around and realize he's throwing away his best friend for nothing. Only because that's what I wish had happened for me. You don't get to choose someone else's reactions, you just have to live your truth.

The story flowed well. The reader gets to understand the friendship between Tim and Tom and how Tim works so hard to keep it because he is in love with Tom. It was difficult to accept how easily Tim coped with Toms rejection. This spoiled the book for me.

"Never Do a Wrong Thing" was written in an unusual and very effective way. It's as if the book is being penned as a long letter directly from Tim to his lifelong best friend, Tom. Of course, it is written in first person, and Tom is usually just referred to as 'you'. I can't remember ever reading another book written like this. I'm sure stories such as this have played out, in real life, countless times over the years, and sadly will probably continue to occur in years to come.

I thought the cast of characters was well thought out, though of necessity, we only know what Tim chooses to tell us about them. The writing is very original and extremely readable, and I found the story compelling.

This book is definitely on my recommended list!

I actually do appreciate that this story is not a HEA. It's important to read stories of surviving a crumbling friendship due to bigotry. I wasn't a huge fan of reading the entire book as the MC talking directly to the crush, but it wasn't a big deal. What I did have a problem with is the author brought the date rapist back from the previous book as some sort of gay guide and he STILL doesn't have to acknowledge his insipid behavior in the past. At least this book had more of an ending than the prior book.

This is a book that is full of raw emotion. Ones that we can all relate to, and want to scream to the winds. To that I say thank you, even after all of my years it speaks to me in both whispers and shouts.

5.0 out of 5 stars This story is real life for so many gay teens
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 7, 2020
This book encapsulates my teenage years that feature in Queer Me!: Halfway Between Flying and Crying. The emotions, the fears, the need, they are all there. Marcus Herzig and I express them differently, but the longing, oh the longing...

It was as if I were that Tim and his Tom were my John. And it brought real tears to my eyes as I read of the total love love and the absolute pain of love.

Reviewing this book is very hard without spoilers, and I won't give any. What I can say is that the quality of the writing and the characterisation made it almost timeless and placeless. I recognise the world from the UK, a very different geography from that inhabited by the cast.

I hope references in throwaway lines to current matters won't date it, but I doubt they will. This is a truly excellent tale, worthy of your attention and time.

This gay romance has deeper revelations about friendship and romance. The narrative voice is so compelling that you have to keep reading. The story line moves rapidly and is really a convincing introduction to the experience of abusive relationships.

2.0 out of 5 stars Typos galore, and the characters are all one-dimensional
Reviewed in Japan on April 6, 2019
I finished the book to be able to honestly add it to my Reading Challenge on Goodreads, but if that hadn't been a motivator I would've DNFed it.

@Amazon do you have a policy of not allowing Kindle ebooks to be sold unless they're free of typos such as "good luck" in place of "good look"? No, you don't -- please get one. The typos detracted from the enjoyment (what little of it I could have) of the book and in the end I came away promising myself never to read this author again.

Great characters which were very relatable, would love to A sequel with most of these characters returning.

Fav quote - “Seriously,” I said, “it was as if my dad had told her I was joining a cult or something.”
"But you are, darling,” Sam said. “Today you’re joining the most fabulous cult ever, and you’ll never look back.”
