The balance has shifted and it’s up to Claire to set things right. Only she doesn’t know how and needs to remember. As with a lot of E.H. James’ books, this is a fast suspense read with that bit of horror factor. It will keep you engaged from beginning to end. I was pleased to see some familiar characters make an appearance. I can also appreciate the small things added by the author. Claire’s reaction being one of them. This is a great series and if you’re a fan of paranormal goodness, this series is for you. I give this 4 stars.

The plot was cleverly woven and featured concepts such as time travel, transmutation, inner awareness, and predestination.

Recommended for readers who enjoy horror, particularly those who have enjoy Neil Gaiman and Stephen King.

Material Disclosure: I received a copy of book in exchange for an honest review.

Canadian author E.H. James is a prolific writer of short stories – stories that test the imagination and call forth ghost like thoughts of the dark world about which we know very little. James is part of that conundrum as there is no biographical information on this gifted author as though that is meant to be part of the mysteries presented. We learn that she has read and researched in the areas of parapsychology and metaphysics, for the past 40 years, and has woven the real and imaginary together into stories of the strange and bizarre. The fruits of her labor show!

This is Part III of her series THE DARKENING and James’ mastery of the short story is obvious to those readers fortunate to have been introduced to her craft. In a matter a few pages she is able to conjure an atmosphere that challenges the reader’s courage to enter past the initial page, and the manner in which she quickly sketches lifelike characters and draws us into their interactions with the challenges they encounter is masterful.

Some of the atmospheric writing is present in the Prologue – ‘Saalas raised her hand. Forming the high priestess symbol over the chamber door, she then waited. Its massive weight shifted, and it slid open. The chamber of Kolas stood empty and silent before her…at its center, the book of Qua’el…There was a low hum, and the book glowed under her touch. Her heartbeat quickened. Words and sounds rose form the book and swirled around her…’

But on to the story – ‘Michael’s daughter, Claire, is now eighty and a widow. In the twilight of her life, she has come to accept a quiet and uneventful existence. But that is all about to change. For Claire is the Araphym, an immortal, human hybrid, and the only thing standing between Cagas, king of the underworld, and the total annihilation of the human race. Only problem is Claire doesn’t remember…Will Claire come to realize her place in history as the Araphym, or will life as she knows it cease to exist?’

Richly painted grotesqueries flood the pages of this mesmerizing book. E. H. James must have traveled in that other world to be so concisely informed! Fine reading! Grady Harp, January 20
